Modern cleaning gadgets are no longer just a toy for techno enthusiasts and have become full-fledged assistants in the home. If you just unpacked a box with a robot vacuum cleaner from Xiaomi or a sub-brand Mijia, you have to initialize it correctly. A competent initial setup is the foundation of stable operation of the device for many years to come.
Many users make the mistake of starting cleaning immediately after turning on, ignoring the important steps of calibrating sensors and connecting to the network. As a result, the map of the room is curved and notifications on the phone do not come. In this article, we will discuss the entire process in stages so that your Xiaomi Vacuum Cleaner works like a Swiss watch.
Before you go to the software part, you need to prepare a physical space. Make sure that the floor in the room where the initial setup will be, clean of large items, cables and mats that can confuse the wheels. The robot must move freely to build an accurate map of the room.
β οΈ Note: Do not start the process of creating a map if there are socks or wires scattered on the floor. This can lead to a device being stuck and incorrectly storing the geometry of the room in memory.
Preparation of charging station and placement
The first step is always to install a docking station, find a place with 0.5 meters of unimpeded access to the left and right, and 1.5 meters in front, which is necessary for correct docking of contacts and navigation. The socket must be grounded, because the robot's electronics are sensitive to voltage fluctuations.
Place the station on a flat floor, press it close to the wall. If you use a wet-cleaning model, make sure the water tank is installed correctly and the rag is secured with Velcros. After installing the base, turn the device on with a button on the case or top panel.
To start, charge the battery to 100%, the battery indicator will flash during charging and will stop burning or change color when fully charged. Do not interrupt this process, since the calibration of the battery cell occurs in the first cycles.
- π Place the base in the zone with a stable Wi-Fi signal router.
- π Use only the original power supply from the kit.
- π§Ή Remove all obstacles within a radius of 2 meters from the charging station.

Installation of the Mi Home application and registration
The main management tool is the Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home), which should be downloaded strictly from official Google Play or App Stores to avoid malware. Once installed, open the app and create a Xiaomi account if you do not already have one.
When registering, it is important to choose the right region. For devices purchased at official retail in Russia or CIS, the "Russia" region is usually suitable. If you have a global version or device from China, the region may differ, depending on the server on which the cleaning cards and history will be stored.
Turn on Bluetooth and geolocation on your smartphone. This is a requirement to find the device within radius. Press the Add Device button in the upper right corner of the app. The system will automatically start scanning the space.
If the automatic search didn't work, go to the device directory, select the "Vaccelers" category, and find your model in the list. The names may vary: Roborock S50, Mijia 1C, Xiaomi Vacuum Mop. Select the exact model match listed on the nameplate at the bottom.

If the app is looking for a device for a long time, try rebooting the router and reconnecting the Wi-Fi on the phone, sometimes helping to temporarily switch the network to 2.4 GHz.
Connecting to a Wi-Fi network
The most critical step is to connect the robot to the Internet. Note that most Xiaomi models only support 2.4 GHz. If your router distributes a 5 GHz network, the connection will not work. You either need to split the networks in the router settings or temporarily disable 5 GHz.
Enter the Wi-Fi password in the app. Make sure the phone's keyboard doesn't have Caps Lock on and the input language is correct. Once you enter the password, the robot will start to emit audible signals, confirming the connection attempt. The Wi-Fi indicator on the case should start to flash.
It can take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes, and don't switch between apps on your phone and keep the screen on. If you have a "failed to connect" error, try resetting the network settings on the vacuum cleaner itself by holding both the power and the back buttons.
| Indicator | Status. | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Orange (blinks) | Interconnection mode | Ready to connect. |
| Orange (constantly) | Network error | Incorrect password or weak signal |
| Green (blinks) | Update of the PO | Firmware loading in. |
| Green (constantly) | Success. | Connected to the network |
What if the router has hidden the SSID?
First cleaning and mapping
Once connected successfully, the app will prompt a quick cleaning operation, which is the perfect moment to create the first map of the room, and make sure all doors to the rooms are open and the thresholds are surmountable for the deviceβs wheels (usually up to 2 cm).
Run Quiet Cleaning or standard, so that the robot doesn't scare pets with loud noises. As you move, a laser rangefinder (LDS) or gyroscope will scan walls and furniture. On your smartphone screen, you'll see a real-time map of the apartment.
Don't interfere with the process if the robot isn't stuck. Let it completely clear the area and return to base. Only after you return to charge the map is considered saved. If you interrupt cleaning, the geometry may not be correct.
- π Open all interior doors before the start.
- π« Remove wires, toys and clothes from the floor.
- π Follow the process through the application in real time.
Configuring virtual walls and zones
One of the most useful features of the Xiaomi ecosystem is the ability to create virtual constraints. From the map menu, select the Zones tool or the Walls tool. You can draw a red line that the robot won't cross, or a rectangle that it ignores.
This is especially true for protecting areas with carpets (if you have a model without a brush lift), places where animal bowls stand, or areas with fragile objects, and you can also create zones for wet cleaning so that the robot does not wet the carpet.
Configure the no-go zones through the map settings menu β Virtual walls. Just draw a line along the boundary of the carpet. Save the changes, and next time the robot will strictly adhere to the set boundaries.
β οΈ Warning: Virtual walls are tied to a particular stored map, and if you move the base to another room or the map gets lost, the settings of the zones will disappear and you will have to draw them again.
Automation schedule and scenarios
So you can keep the house clean without you, set up a schedule. You can find a timer or a schedule on the device menu. You can set days of the week and start times. You can do cleaning every day at 11:00, while you're at work.
For advanced users, smart home integration is available, so you can create a script that says, "If I leave the house, start the vacuum cleaner." Or, "If air quality is down, turn on the cleaner and vacuum cleaner." This is done using the Automation tab.
You can also configure voice control via Yandex.Alice or Google Assistant by linking accounts in the corresponding applications, which allows you to give commands by voice: "Alice, turn on the vacuum cleaner in the kitchen."

Geolocation automation is the most convenient way to clean, and the robot will start working when you leave the house and return to the base before you arrive.
Maintenance and update of firmware
Check for updates in the Settings menu regularly β General. β Check for updates. Manufacturers often release patches that improve obstacle-detection algorithms and battery performance. Update can take up to 15 minutes, and you can't use the robot.
Keep your physical care in mind. Clean the main hairbrush once a week, wipe the bumper sensors and the charging contacts at the bottom. The HEPA filter should be shaken out after each cleaning and changed every 2-3 months.
If the robot starts to behave strangely, try resetting to factory settings, which usually requires a 5-10 second power and return button to base, which will help to eliminate software errors.
- π Update the firmware only when the battery is more than 50 times charged%.
- π§Ή Change your side brushes every time. 6-8 months of active operation.
- π§ Wipe the water level sensor and dock-station contacts with a dry cloth.
