Why Xiaomi Yeelight is the best choice for a smart home?
Xiaomi Yeelight smart nightlights are no longer just a soft light source in the dark. Today, they are full-fledged smart home devices that can synchronize with alarm clocks, respond to voice commands and even simulate sunrise. But to unlock the full potential of the gadget, it needs to be properly configured β and here many users have questions.
In this article, weβll look at all the steps of setting up, from the first connection to subtle settings like color temperature and integration with Google Assistant or Alice. Weβll focus on the typical bugs that can cause a nightlight to not connect to Wi-Fi or get lost in the app. If youβve just unpacked the box or have been using the device for a month but want to make the most of it, read on.
Note: the instruction is suitable for most models of the Yeelight series, including the popular Yeelight Bedside Lamp, Yeelight LED Desk Lamp and compact Yeelight Night Light, the only difference is in some menu items β we'll point them out separately.
Step 1: Preparing for setup β what to do before turning on
Before you connect the nightlight to the network, check three key points:
- π± Smartphone on Android 6.0+ or iOS 12+ β Older versions may not support up-to-date smart device software.
- πΆ 2.4GHz Wi-Fi β Yeelight nightlights donβt work on 5GHz networks (except for Wi-Fi 6 models, but they are few).
- π Nightlight Charging β If itβs a battery-powered model (like Yeelight Moonlight), charge it to at least 30%.
Also prepare:
- π The socket near the installation site (if the night network).
- π Login and password from your Wi-Fi network (they will be needed for binding).
- π οΈ Screwdriver (for some desktop models where you need to unscrew the base).
β οΈ Note: If you are setting up a nightlight in an office or hotel, make sure the network does not require browser authorization (as in hotels). WPA2-encryption.
Advice for owners of Xiaomi Router: if you have a dual-band router, temporarily turn off the 5 GHz network in the settings, so that the smartphone and nightlight are accurately connected to 2.4 GHz.
Step 2: Install the app β Mi Home or Yeelight App?
To set up the nightlight Xiaomi Yeelight has two official applications:
- Mi Home is a universal software for all Xiaomi devices, including smart home, suitable if you already have other gadgets in the ecosystem (for example, Mi Band or Roborock).
How do you choose?
- πΉ If you plan to integrate the nightlight with other Xiaomi devices (for example, to turn it on when opening the door through the Mi Door Sensor), take the Mi Home.
- πΉ If the advanced lighting settings are important (for example, RGB-Gradients or Music Modes β Download Yeelight App.
- πΉ For basic use (on/off timer) any suitable.

If you already have Mi Home installed but the nightlight doesn't appear on the device list, upgrade to the latest version. Older versions (up to 6.0) don't support newer Yeelight models.
Step 3: Connecting the nightlight to Wi-Fi - step-by-step instructions
Now, the most important step is to tie the nightlight to your network.
- Turn the nightlight on the outlet (or press the power button if it's a battery model) and wait until the indicator flashes yellow (waiting mode).
- Open the app (Mi Home or Yeelight) and click "Add Device" (Icon "+" top-right).
- Select category: In Mi Home: "Lighting" β "Yeelight" β In Yeelight App: "Add a lamp to your model" β The system will determine the model.
Confirm the flashing of the indicator
Yeah, flashing.
Select a Wi-Fi network
Wait for completion

If step 5 is marked with an error called βI failed to connect,β try:
- π Restart router and nightlight (remove fork for 10 seconds).
- π΅ Shut down. VPN or proxy on a smartphone β they can block the connection.
- π Make sure that the Wi-Fi password does not contain Cyrillic characters or spaces.
Unplugged. VPN phone-on|Nightlight flashes yellow|Phone connected to 2.4 GHz|Wi-Fi password copied to buffer|Router rebooted-->
Step 4: Basic settings β brightness, color and timers
Once connected, the nightlight will appear in the main menu of the app.
Light adjustment
The Light tab (or Light) allows you to configure:
- π‘οΈ Color temperature -- from warm (2700K, as an incandescent lamp, until cold (6500K, Optimal for sleeping: 3000β4000K.
- π¨ Colour (for) RGB-- Select from the palette or the finished script (Romantic, Reading, etc.).
- π Brightness is regulated by a slider. 10-30% is enough for a night lighter to avoid cutting your eyes.
Timers and schedules
To turn the night on/off automatically:
- Go to the Timer.
- Click "Add" and select the time.
- Specify the action: "On" or "off".
- Save. Repeat for other time points.
Example of a schedule for healthy sleep:
| Time. | Action. | Brightness | Color temperature |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22:00 | Turn on | 10% | 2700K (warm) |
| 23:30 | Reduce brightness | 5% | 2700K |
| 06:30 | A simulated sunrise | 1%β30% (smoothly) | 2700Kβ5000K |
| 07:00 | Turn it off. | β | β |
β οΈ Note: In models without a battery (for example, Yeelight Bedside Lamp 2), the switch-off timer does not physically turn off the power - the lamp remains in standby mode and consumes ~0.5 W. To completely de-energize, use a smart socket.
How to create a smooth sunrise?
Step 5: Advanced Features β Scripts, Voice Control and Smart Home
Now letβs move on to the βadvancedβ chips that take Yeelight to the next level.
Scenarios and automation
Yeelight App has ready-made scripts:
- π Moonlight β a soft night light for children.
- π Reading β A bright, cold light to read.
- π¬ Movie β dynamic backlight synchronized with music or video (requires a smartphone microphone).
To create your own script:
- Go to Scripts" β "Create".
- Choose colors and transitions (such as a smooth change from blue to green).
- Save and assign to a button in the app or voice command.
Voice control
Yeelight's nighttime support:
- π£οΈ Alice (Yandex) β say: βAlice, turn on the nightlight for 20%".
- π€ Google Assistant β βOK Google, make the lights warm".
- π Siri (via HomeKit) β requires additional customization in Mi Home.
To connect to the voice assistant:
- In Mi Home, go to the nightlight settings β "Voice control".
- Choose the service (Yandex, Google or Apple HomeKit).
- Follow the instructions on the screen (scanning may be required) QR-code).
β οΈ Attention: To work with Alice, the nightlight must be linked to a Xiaomi account in the Russian region. If you choose "mainland" when setting up, voice control will not work.
5.3 Integration with a smart home
The Yeelight nightlight can interact with other devices:
- πͺ Enable when opening the door (via Mi Door Sensor).
- π₯ Blink red when the smoke sensor is triggered (Aqara Smoke Alarm).
- π΅ Sync with music through Mi AI Speaker.
To set up the automation:
- At Mi Home, go to Automation" β "Add".
- Select a trigger (e.g., βMotion Sensor detectedβ).
- Specify the action for the night light (for example, "Enable 100% brightness").
- Save the script.
π‘
Voice control and automation work only when you have a stable nightlight connection to Wi-Fi. If the router reboots frequently, use a backup channel β for example, the Xiaomi Gateway smart hub that supports the Zigbee protocol (but you will need additional hardware).
Step 6: Solving problems β the nightlight doesnβt connect, blink or donβt respond
Even after the right setup, you can have failures.
6.1 Nightlight does not connect to Wi-Fi
Check it out.
- π Does the night light (the indicator should burn or blink).
- πΆ Does Wi-Fi work on your smartphone (try to open a website).
- π Does the connection block antivirus or firewall (turn them off temporarily).
If nothing helps:
- Reset the nightlight to factory settings: Hold the power button for 5-10 seconds until the indicator starts to blink quickly.
- Repeat the connection procedure from scratch.
6.2 Nightlight is connected but does not respond to commands
Possible causes:
- π Xiaomi server problems (check status at status.mi.com).
- π± Older version of the app (update Mi Home or Yeelight App).
- π Nightlight "hang" - turn it off from the socket for 30 seconds.
The night shall spontaneously be switched on/off
This may be due to:
- β° Timer conflict (check schedule in the app).
- π€ Automation from other devices (for example, a motion sensor is triggered falsely).
- π‘ Interference from neighbors on Wi-Fi (change the channel on the router in the settings).
To diagnose the problem:
- Open the event log in Mi Home (Devices section" β pick out the night β "Journal").
- See what caused the last switch on/off.
