This compact device, often made in the form of a nightlight or cylinder, serves as a bridge between your Zigbee gadgets and your home Wi-Fi network. Without this element, many sensors, switches and lamps simply won’t be able to transmit data to your smartphone or interact with each other in predetermined scenarios.
The initial activation process may seem confusing to beginners due to the regional settings and the choice of servers in the application. However, if you consistently follow the steps described in this manual, you can deploy a full-fledged automation system in minutes. It is important to understand that the successful operation of the hub depends on the selected server in the Mi Home application, since devices tied to the Chinese region will not see the gateway chosen for Europe, and vice versa.
In this article, we will explore in detail not only the basic connection, but also the subtleties of setting up scenarios that turn a set of sensors into a real smart home, learn how to update the gateway software for stability and how to avoid the typical mistakes that most users encounter when installing equipment first.
Preparation of equipment and server selection
Before you start a physical connection, you need to prepare a software environment. Make sure that your smartphone has the Mi Home app (or Xiaomi Home in newer versions) and you have registered an account. The critical point is to choose the right region when you log in to your profile, because it depends on the list of available devices and the speed of the server response.
If you have purchased a global version of the hub, you should select your country of residence in the application settings. If the device is intended for the Chinese market (which often happens when ordering from marketplaces), you need to change the region to China.
It’s also worth pre-prepared 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. Most smart home devices, including Xiaomi gateways, don’t support 5GHz, so make sure your router broadcasts the right range. If you have a dual-band router with a single network name (Smart Connect), there are sometimes connection issues, and then it makes sense to temporarily split the networks or use a guest network only at 2.4GHz.
In addition to the software, check the package. The box usually contains the gateway itself, the USB power cable and, in some models, the Micro-USB cable. To work, you will also need a power adapter with an output of 5V/1A, which can often be taken from an old smartphone if the regular unit is not included.
Physical connection and power installation
The first step is to power the device, and take the complete cable and connect it to the corresponding connector on the bottom or back of the hub. Zigbee protocol works on the principle of mesh, where constant-powered devices (outlets, lamps) relay the signal. However, the gateway itself must have a direct and confident connection with the Wi-Fi router, so hiding it in a metal shield or behind thick concrete walls is not recommended.
The process of adding a device to an application
Run the Mi Home app on your smartphone and make sure that Bluetooth on your phone is on, which will speed up the process of finding new devices. Connecting Zigbee peripheral devices

Diagnosis and elimination
During operation, there may be situations when devices lose communication or stop responding. First of all, check the status of the hub in the application: if it appears as “Offline”, a problem in the Wi-Fi connection.
