Why hand-drawing routes are more important than smart cleaning
Xiaomiโs robot vacuum cleaners (including Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro, S7, X10+, and others) are equipped with advanced LDS-based navigation systems or visual cameras. However, even the smartest algorithms donโt always cope with the peculiarities of your apartment: forget corners, ignore carpets or get stuck under the couch. Manually drawing a route through the Mi Home or Xiaomi Home app allows you to increase cleaning efficiency by 30-40%, reducing time and battery consumption.
In this article, you will find step-by-step instructions for different models, including older versions without zone support (e.g. Mi Robot). 1S) and the new flagships with 3D-We'll take it apart:
- ๐บ๏ธ How to create and save a map of the room (including multi-storey apartments).
- ๐๏ธ Tools for drawing routes, zones and "no-go" areas.
- โ๏ธ Cleaning priority settings (for example, first vacuum cleaner, then wet cleaning).
- ๐ How to edit a route after robot errors.
Before you start, make sure your vacuum cleaner is connected to Wi-Fi and synced with your Mi Account, without which access to maps and settings will be limited.
Preparation: What to do before drawing a route
Before you can draw a route, the robot has to build an accurate map of your home.
- Make sure the battery is at least 50% charged (preferably 100%).
- Remove small items (wires, toys, shoes) that may interfere with scanning.
- Close the doors to rooms that do not need to be cleaned (such as the bathroom).
- Run the robot in Mapping mode (in some models โ Cleaning rooms).
๐น If you have a multi-level apartment, create separate maps for each floor. Xiaomi robots can't automatically switch between levels - it has to be done manually in the app.
โ๏ธ Checklist before mapping
After the first pass, check the map for errors:
- ๐ช There are no extra โwallsโ (for example, reflected in the mirror).
- ๐๏ธ Furniture is displayed correctly (does not merge with other objects).
- ๐ Scale is maintained (rooms correspond to real sizes).
โ ๏ธ Attention: If the map is curved (e.g., the corners of the room do not match reality), delete it and re-start the robot. You can't manually correct the distorted map, and this will lead to navigation errors.
Ways to draw a route in the Mi Home application
Depending on the robot model and the application version, the interface may differ, but the general principle is the same.
Method 1: Drawing cleaning areas
Suitable for all map-enabled models (starting with the Mi Robot 1S) and allows you to specify priority areas that need to be cleaned more often or more thoroughly.
- Open the Mi Home app โ select your vacuum cleaner.
- Go to the Map tab (or Cleaning by zone).
- Click Add Zone (+ icon or pencil).
- Finger around the area on the map. Use zoom (swipe your fingers out on the screen) to be accurate.
- Choose the type of cleaning: ๐งน Just a vacuum cleaner. ๐ฆ Wet cleaning only (for models with a mop). ๐งน๐ฆ Vacuum cleaner + wet-cleaning.
Save the zone and launch the robot.
Method 2: Route drawing (for LDS models)
Only available for vacuum cleaners with laser scanner (S7, X10+, Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro and later) allows you to specify the exact path of movement, for example, along walls or diagonally.
- In the app, go to the Map โ Edit the route.
- Choose the Line or Curve tool.
- Draw a line on the map, pointing the way. Use marker dots for turns.
- Set up the parameters: ๐ Number of passes (1-3 times). ๐ Cleaning width (for example, 20 cm for narrow passages). โก Suction power (maximum for carpets).
Save the route and schedule it (for example, daily at 10:00).
๐ก
If the robot ignores the drawn route, check if it is blocked by a non-zone zone.
| Model robot. | Support for zones | Route support | Multi-card (floor) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Robot 1S | โ Yes. | โ No. | โ No. |
| Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro | โ Yes. | โ Yes. | โ Yes, up to 3 cards) |
| Xiaomi S7 | โ Yes. | โ Yes (with an update) | โ Yes, up to 4 cards) |
| Xiaomi X10+ | โ Yes. | โ Yes (3D-route) | โ Yes, up to 5 cards) |
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Even with the right route mapping, the robot can act unexpectedly.
- ๐ค Robot does not follow the drawn path: Check if the route is saved (sometimes the app forgets the changes); make sure the robot is on the same map (for example, did not switch to another floor); Update the vacuum cleaner firmware and the Mi Home app.
- ๐ซ No-go zones don't work: Remove and repaint them -- sometimes coordinates get confused. Check if the areas with the cleaning route overlap.
- ๐ Robot is constantly returning to base: Maybe the battery is dead. Charge it to 100% and restart cleaning. Check if the base signal is blocking furniture or walls.
โ ๏ธ Note: If you use virtual walls (for example, to restrict access to the nursery), remember: they only work when Wi-Fi is active!
What if the robot loses the map?
Additional Chips: Schedule, Priorities and Voice Commands
Painting is only part of the setup, so to make cleaning as efficient as possible, use these features:
- โฐ Zone schedule: For example, the kitchen can be cleaned daily and the bedroom every 3 days. For this: Create zones for each room. In the Schedule section, add a new task. Select the desired areas and set the cleaning frequency.
- ๐ Voice control: If the vacuum cleaner supports Alice or Google Assistant, you can start cleaning with your voice. Examples of commands: "Alice, run the robot vacuum cleaner in the kitchen" (if the area is called "Kitchen"). "OK, Google, start cleaning the living roomยป. ๐ Battery savings: For larger homes, set up phased cleaning: Break the map into 2-3 parts. Launch the robot in turn in each zone with a return to base for recharging.
๐ก
Use the Room Cleaning feature (if your model has one) โ it automatically optimizes the route, reducing the time by 20-25% compared to manual drawing.
How to edit a route after robot errors
If the robot missed the site or got stuck, you don't have to redraw it all over again.
- Add the missing area: Open the map in the app. Click Edit โ Add zone. Circle the missed area and save.
- Eliminate problem spot: If the robot gets stuck under the couch: Draw a no-go zone around that place. or add a virtual wall in the map settings.
Adjust the path:
For models with route support (S7, X10+):
- Remove the old route.
- Draw a new one, avoiding โnarrowโ places.
- Set priority for the passage (for example, first along the walls, then in the center).
