Xiaomi’s robot vacuum cleaners have gained popularity due to a combination of high functionality and affordable prices. However, many users face a problem: after buying the device “speaks” in Chinese or English, and the app menu is displayed in an incomprehensible language. Installing Russian can seem a difficult task, especially if the instructions are in a foreign language or not at all.
In this article, we will explore all the current ways of Russification, from official methods through the Mi Home app to alternative solutions for older models, learn how to change the robot voice language, the application interface and even firmware if the standard settings do not work, and also reveal a hidden method of changing the region to Mi Home, which allows you to unlock additional features for Russian users.
Why does Xiaomi’s robot vacuum cleaner not support Russian?
The main reason for the lack of Russian in the menu or voice prompts is regional restrictions. Xiaomi adapts firmware for specific markets, and for Europe/Asia, different versions of the software are often used.
- 🌍 Chinese versions (CN) — They only support Chinese and sometimes English, but they have maximum functionality (zoning, multiple cleaning, etc.).
- 🇪🇺 European versions (EU) — They are usually Russified, but may be deprived of some functions due to local regulations.
- 🌐 Global versions (Global) – many languages, but often updated later and have stripped down settings.
The second factor is the firmware version: older models (such as the Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1 or Dreame D9) may not have received updates with Russian support, even if the device was sold in Russia. New models (Xiaomi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Pro, DreameBot L10s Ultra) are usually Russified out of the box, but require the correct configuration of the region in the application.
Method 1: Change the language through the Mi Home app (official method)
The easiest way to Russify a robot vacuum cleaner is to change the region and language in the Mi Home app, which works for most models released after 2019. Importantly, make sure you have the latest version of the app installed before you start (update it to Google Play or the App Store).
Step instructions:
- Open Mi Home and go to profile (the human icon in the lower right corner).
- Click on Settings → Region.
- If you don't have that option, try Singapore or Hong Kong, which often give you access to Russian.
- Return to the main screen, find your robot vacuum cleaner and go to its settings (cog in the upper right corner).
- Go to Device Settings → Language and select Russian.
- Reboot the robot (power button for 5 seconds) and check for changes.
If after changing the region, the robot “forgot” the binding to the account, re-add the device through Add the device → Vacuum cleaner.
Delete the Mi Home app cache (in phone settings)
Check the stability of the Internet connection (Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz)
Disable VPN (if used)
Charge the robot vacuum cleaner at least 50%-->
⚠️ Note: If you change your region to Russia, some features (such as zoning or multiple cleaning) may disappear, due to local restrictions Xiaomi has on the Russian market.
Method 2: Russification through alternative applications (Valetudo, DreameHome)
If the official Mi Home app doesn't offer Russian, you can use the open source side of the software, which connects directly to the robot over the local network and allows you to manage it without the Xiaomi cloud.
- 🤖 Valetudo – universal firmware for robot vacuum cleaners based Xiaomi/Dreame/Viomi. Supports Russian interface and voice packets.
- 🏠 DreameHome – an alternative application for Dreame models (D9, D10, L10 Has a Russified menu and advanced settings.
- 🌐 Home Assistant — a smart home system with the integration of robot vacuum cleaners.
Installation of Valetudo will require:
- Get root access to the robot (through exploit or soldering iron, for advanced users).
- Install Valetudo firmware according to the instructions from the official website.
- Download the Russian voice package via the Valetudo web interface.
The advantage of this method is full control over the device, including access to hidden functions (for example, adjusting the suction power or speed of movement).
What happens if you interrupt Valetudo's firmware?
Method 3: Update your firmware via USB (for older models)
If your robot vacuum cleaner is released before 2018 (for example, Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1 or Viomi) V2), Official updates with Russian may not come, in which case the manual firmware will help USB-accumulator.
You'll need:
- 🔌 USB-flash-drive FAT32 (32GB).
- 📁 Firmware with support for Russian (you can download on the forums) 4PDA or MIUI Su Su Su Su Su Su).
- 🔧 Screwdriver for access to USB-port of the robot (usually hidden under the cover).
Instructions:
- Download the firmware for your model (for example, mirobo_vacuum_v1_5.6.7_ru.zip).
- Unpack the archive and copy the firmware file (usually with the.pkg extension) to the flash drive.
- Turn off the robot, remove the top cover and find USB-Port (may be hidden under a seal).
- Insert the flash drive and hold the Reset (or Home) button for 10 seconds until the indicator blinks.
- Wait for the update to finish (the robot will emit an audible signal).
| Model robot. | Supported firmware with Russian | Download link |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 1 | 3.5.8_ru or 5.6.7_ru | 4PDA |
| Viomi V2 | 1.8.5_ru_mod | MIUI Soo |
| Dreame D9 | 3.6.0_0050 (tongue-in-cheek) | Official website |
⚠️ Attention: Firmware through USB Resets all the robot settings, including stored room maps. Before upgrading, take screenshots of the maps in the Mi Home app or export them if the feature is available.
Method 4: Change the robot's voice to Russian (without firmware)
If you only need to Russify voice prompts (e.g., “Getting Cleanup Start” or “Charging Completed”) and the app menu is already in Russian, you can manually replace the audio files, which works for models that support customization of sounds (Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum 2, DreameBot L10, etc.).
Algorithm of action:
- Download the Russian voice package (example: files) start_cleaning.ru.wav, charging_complete.ru.wav).
- Connect to the robot via SSH (Valetudo manual) or ADB.
- Go to the folder with audio files (usually /mnt/UDISK/voice/) and replace the original files with Russian.
- Reboot the robot with the command: reboot
For models without SSH-access (e.g. Viomi) SE) can be used SD-map:
- Format the map in FAT32.
- Create a voice folder and put Russian audio files with the correct names (e.g. error.wav) there.
- Insert the map into the robot and reboot it.
💡
To make the robot’s voice sound natural, select audio files with a bitrate of 128-192 kbit / s and a frequency of 44.1 kHz. Too “robotic” voices (for example, from synthesizers) can be poorly recognized by the device’s microphone.
Method 5: Using Google Assistant or Alice to Manage
If you can't Russify the robot, you can control it in Russian through voice assistants, which doesn't change the language of the device's interface, but allows you to give commands without knowing English.
Configure through Google Assistant:
- Connect the robot vacuum cleaner to the Mi Home and make sure it shows up in the list of devices.
- Open Google Home, click + → Set up your device → Are there devices already?
- Choose Xiaomi and log in to your account.
- After syncing, tell Alice or Google, “OK Google, start vacuuming.”
For Yandex Alice:
- Install the Yandex app on your phone and enable the Xiaomi Mi Home skill.
- Connect Mi Home and Yandex accounts.
- Now you can use the commands: "Alice, turn on the vacuum cleaner" "Alice, return the vacuum cleaner to the base"
Limitation of this method: the robot’s voice prompts will remain in the original language, but you will give all commands in Russian.
💡
Voice assistants don’t replace firmware Russification, but they allow you to control a robot without knowing English, which is ideal for users who only need basic functions (start/stop, return to base).
Frequent mistakes and their solutions
When russifying Xiaomi robot vacuum cleaners, users often face typical problems, and we have collected the most common mistakes and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| There is no option in Mi Home “Russian language” | Wrong region or old firmware | Change region to Singapore or update your software via USB |
| The robot will not be connected after the change of region | Resetting network settings | Forget the device in Mi Home and add it again |
| The voice is in Chinese, but the menu is in Russian. | There is no Russian voice package | Install the package via Valetudo or replace the audio files |
| After the firmware, the robot does not turn on | Incompatible version of the software or interrupted update | Restore the firmware through UART (soldier iron required) |
If none of the methods worked, check:
- 🔄 Firmware version – some models (for example, Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum) 1S) Requires prior updates to a specific version before Russification.
- 📡 Wi-Fi connection – the robot must be connected to a 2.4 GHz network (5 GHz not supported).
- 🔧 root access – deep customization (voice file replacement, Valetudo installation) may require unlocking.
