Why Xiaomi Speaks Chinese and How to Fix It
You just unpacked the new Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum, turned it on, and instead of the usual "Getting Clean" you heard unfamiliar characters on the screen or voice commands in Chinese. This problem is familiar to many owners of Xiaomi equipment ordered from abroad. The manufacturer often supplies devices with firmware for the domestic market in China, where Russian is simply not provided.
The good news is that most models (including the popular Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite, S6, S7 and X10+) support Russification. The bad news is that the process is not always intuitive. In some cases, it is enough to change the region in the application, in others, you will need to reflash the device. We will analyze all the current methods, including official and alternative, with nuances for different versions of the firmware.
Important: If your vacuum cleaner is purchased from an official Xiaomi store in Russia (for example, on the Mi Store or from authorized partners), it must already have Russian out of the box. All instructions below are for Chinese firmware devices imported through AliExpress, Gearbest or other sites.
Method 1: Change region in the Mi Home app
The easiest method is to change the region in the official Mi Home app, which works for most current models (S5 Max, S6, S7, X10+ and later), but may not work on older versions of the firmware (until 2020).
Here's the step-by-step instruction:
- Remove the current Mi Home from your phone and install the international version from Google Play or the App Store.
- Launch the app and select Russia when you first start up. If you have already created an account, go to Profile โ Settings โ Region and change it.
- Add the vacuum cleaner to the app again: press + โ Robot vacuum cleaner and follow the instructions.
- After connecting, check the language in the device settings: Settings โ Voice prompts โ Language.
If Russian has appeared, congratulations! If not, read on.
Method 2: Russification through the Mi Home application (alternative method)
Sometimes changing the region doesn't help because of the device's link to a Chinese server, in which case you might try forcibly reassigning the region through account manipulation:
- ๐ฑ Create a new Mi Home account with the region of Russia (do not use an old Chinese account!).
- ๐ Reset the vacuum cleaner to the factory settings: press the Home buttons and Power for 5-10 seconds before the sound signal.
- ๐ Connect your device again through a new account. In the Wi-Fi selection phase, use a network without Chinese characters in your name (e.g., do not use the same name). CMCC-123, Home_WiFi).
- ๐ฃ๏ธ After connecting, check the Settings section โ Voice. โ Interface language. If there is no Russian, update the firmware (see next section).

โ ๏ธ Note: If the vacuum cleaner was previously tied to a Chinese Xiaomi account, it may be blocked by a security system, in which case it will need to be unlocked through a service center or using informal methods (see Method 4).
Method 3: Update the firmware to the international version
If the first two methods didn't work, you probably have Chinese firmware on your device without Russian support, and the solution is to upgrade it to the international version. It's the official method, but it needs caution.
Instructions for models S5 Max, S6, S7 and X10+:
- Download the latest international firmware for your model from the official Xiaomi Firmware website (select the Mi Robot Vacuum section).
- Unpack the archive and rename the firmware file to miio_roborock_vacuum_vX.bin (where X is the version).
- Copy the file to the root directory of the internal memory of the vacuum cleaner (plug it into the PC via USB-cable).
- Disconnect the vacuum cleaner from the USB, press the Power button for 10 seconds - the update process will begin.
- After rebooting, check the language in the settings.
โ ๏ธ Warning: Do not interrupt the upgrade process! If the vacuum cleaner is stuck in the firmware phase for longer than 20 minutes, disconnect it from the network, wait 30 seconds and try again. If the problem persists, use the recovery mode (press Home). + 15 seconds power).
What to do if the firmware is not installed?
| Model vacuum cleaner | Supported firmware | Download link | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Robot Vacuum-Mop 2 Lite | 3.5.8_004604 newer | Download | Requires an account link to the region of Russia |
| Roborock S6 | 3.6.9_005125 | Download | Supports OTA-update |
| Roborock S7 | 1.5.8_000014 | Download | Russification is available only after update |
| Xiaomi Mi Robot Vacuum X10+ | 2.0.7_000005 | Download | Requires reset before firmware |
Method 4: Russification through unofficial firmware (for power users)
If the official methods didnโt work, the custom firmware option remains a risky option, but it often saves owners of older models (Mi Robot Vacuum 1S, Roborock S5), for which Xiaomi no longer releases updates.
Popular tools:
- ๐ ๏ธ Valetudo โ open firmware with support for Russian, but requires root access to the device.
- ๐ง DustBuilder - utility for creating custom firmware for a specific model.
- ๐ฆ Modded Firmware - modified versions of official firmware with Russification.
โ ๏ธ Note: Installation of unofficial software may lead to:
- Loss of warranty (if the device is still under warranty).
- Unstable operation of sensors or navigation.
- Block Xiaomi account for violation of the license agreement.
If you do, follow the instructions on the 4PDA or XDA-Developers forums. The Roborock S5 and Mi Robot Vacuum 1S models have stable community Russified firmware, but installing it requires soldering contacts to access the console.
๐ก
Before installing custom firmware, back up the original one through the MiHome Backup Tool. This will help restore the device in the event of a failure.
Method 5: Russification of voice prompts (if the interface is already in Russian)
Sometimes the vacuum cleaner menu is displayed in Russian, but the voice prompts remain in Chinese.
- Open the Mi Home app and select your vacuum cleaner.
- Go to Settings โ Voice prompts.
- In the Voice Language section, select Russian (if not, update the firmware).
- Click Save and restart the device.
If the Russian language is not on the list, but the interface is Russified, try:
- ๐ Disable voice prompts altogether (in the same section).
- ๐ฅ Install third-party voice software (e.g., Robot Voice Pack from Google Play).
- ๐ Reset the vacuum cleaner settings and repeat the binding to the account.
๐ก
Voice packages for robot vacuum cleaners Xiaomi often update separately from the firmware. If after the interface Russification voice remained Chinese, check for updates in the section Voice โ Update packages.
Problem Solving: What to Do When Nothing Works
If none of these methods worked, here is a checklist for diagnosis:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Russian language is in the settings, but not applied | System cache failure | Reset the vacuum cleaner to factory settings and repeat the binding |
| App doesn't see vacuum cleaner after dumping | The device is linked to another account | Use the Delete Device function in your old account |
| Firmware not installed (check error) | Incompatible version of the software | Check the model of the vacuum cleaner and download the correct firmware |
| Vacuum cleaner 'hangs' after update | Firmware process interrupted | Press Home + Power for 15 seconds to reset |
If the problem is not resolved:
- ๐ Contact Xiaomi Service Center (even for imported models, they often help for a nominal fee).
- ๐ฌ Ask a question in thematic forums (4PDA, MIUI Suport).
- ๐ Consider buying an official Russian-language voice module (for example, for Roborock). S6 Separate memory cards with Russification are sold).
