Smart app owners often find themselves in a situation where, after purchasing a new Xiaomi Robot Vacuum device, the application interface is displayed in English or Chinese, this is due to the account being tied to a specific geographic region that is selected when registering, and if you are registered in China, all connected devices will use appropriate localization, which creates significant management difficulties.
Fortunately, you can change your language settings, but the procedure depends on whether you want to change the interface of the Mi Home app itself or the voice commands and statuses of the robot, and most of the time, it’s about changing your account region, because this is a key parameter that determines the available content and language of the system.
In this article, we will take a look at all the available ways to adapt your smart assistant, learn how to safely switch regions, what are the risks of data loss when transferring your account, and how to properly configure voice control through Google Assistant or Yandex Alice. Follow the instructions carefully so that you do not disrupt the smart home scenarios.
Why does the robot speak Chinese or English?
The main reason for your vacuum cleaner’s “nonlinguistic” is because of Xiaomi’s server architecture, and the global servers (Europe, Russia, the United States) and the Chinese servers (CN) are separated, and if you choose China by accident or intentionally when you create an account, the device gets firmware and a language package for that region.
Often users buy the equipment at Chinese sites, where sellers can pre-configure the device but not change the region of the anchor, so the robot works steadily, but all notifications, maps and voice messages are in the original language, which is not a marriage, but only a feature of the logistics chain.
⚠️ Warning: Attempting to force the device to reflash through the engineering menu without changing the region in the application can lead to a complete lockdown of the functionality.
It’s also worth considering that some models designed exclusively for the domestic market of China may not support other languages even after a change in region, but most of the current models of the Roborock, Dreame and Viomi series have multilingual support that is activated automatically when you set up your account correctly.
Change of region in the Mi Home app
The easiest and safest way to change the interface and control language is to change the region in your profile settings, which will redirect your application to another server, where the data will be displayed in the language chosen for that region (for example, Russian for Russia or Kazakhstan).
To perform this operation, you will need Internet access and administrator rights on the control device (smartphone or tablet), the process takes no more than a minute, but requires confirmation of actions.
Keep in mind that once you change region, your device list may temporarily disappear from view. Don't panic: they're still there, just show up in the appropriate tab. To get them back to the general list, you'll need to re-authorize or re-assign the device if they've been removed.
The algorithm of actions is as follows:
- 📱 Open the Mi Home app and go to the Profile tab (usually the person icon in the corner).
- 🌍 Click on Settings and select Region (Region).
- 🇷🇺 In the list of countries, select the desired one (for example, "Russia" or "Germany" for European firmware).
- ✅ Confirm the action in the pop-up warning window.
Once switched, the app can restart. If the interface is in English, check the language of the smartphone itself - Mi Home often inherits system settings for the language of the Android or iOS operating system.
Instructions for transferring the device to another region
If a simple region change doesn’t help or the device refuses to work with the new settings, a full device migration may be required, a more complex procedure that requires removing the robot from your current account and adding it again in the right region.
Before starting the operation, make sure that the robot vacuum cleaner is fully charged and is in the zone of confident reception of the Wi-Fi network. It is also recommended to update the Mi Home application to the latest version through the official app store.
☑️ Checklist before transferring the device
The transfer process involves resetting the network settings of the robot itself, which usually requires two buttons on the device body (often an on button and a home return button) to be pressed simultaneously for 5-7 seconds until a voice message is heard about the Wi-Fi reset.
Next, follow the following steps:
- In the Mi Home app, click and hold the robot icon.
- Select Settings (three dots in the corner) and scroll down to the Delete Device button.
- Confirm the deletion and wait for the device to disappear from the list.
- Change the region in your profile to the one you want (as described in the previous section).
- Press + to add a new device and follow the pairing instructions.
⚠️ Note: When you delete your device from your account, all stored room maps and the history of your hats will be permanently deleted. If you have a complex layout, take screenshots of the map in advance or recreate virtual walls.
Once successfully added, the robot will automatically download the current language packet. If the voice messages are still in a foreign language, check the voice settings in the robot's own menu inside the app.
Setting up voice commands and voiceovers
The interface is just part of the interaction, and many users get annoyed when a robot announces statuses ("Starting cleaning", "Returning to dock") in English, and to change the language of voice, you need to go into the device's deep settings.
In the robot control menu, click on three dots in the upper right corner. Find Voice settings or Volume. There may be a choice of language available. However, often the voice language is rigidly tied to the account region.
How to activate the Russian voice in the Chinese version?
For full-fledged voice control Russification, you can often use a bundle of external assistants, you can configure control via Google Home or Yandex Station, in which case the commands "start cleaning" or "get back to base" will be processed by the assistant in Russian, even if the robot itself "thinks" in Chinese.
The table below shows the correspondence of functions and their support in different regions:
| Function | Region: China | Region: Europe/RF | Region: USA |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interface language | Chinese/English. | Russian/English. | English |
| Robot voice | Chinese | Russian/English. | English |
| Card servers | China (quickly) | Europe (stable) | USA |
| Integration with Alice | No. | Yes. | No. |
It is important to note that integration with Yandex Alice works only stably when choosing a region "Russia". If you choose a region "Germany" or "Singapore", the skill of the smart home Yandex may not see your devices.
Resetting network settings and re-binding
Sometimes changing the language requires completely resetting the robot's network modules, which is true if, after changing the region in the application, the device appears as "Offline" or does not respond to commands. Network reset does not delete the maps, but breaks the connection with the router.
To do the reset, look for a button combination on the body. On most Xiaomi and Roborock models, this is the simultaneous clamping of the power and return buttons. Some Dreame models require you to press the on button for 10 seconds.
💡
Use a 2.4 GHz network. Xiaomi’s robot vacuum cleaners do not support 5 GHz Wi-Fi networks. Make sure your router is giving out a signal in the 2.4 GHz band, otherwise the device’s binding step will always end in error.
Once reset, the Wi-Fi indicator should start flashing, which is a signal that the robot has entered pairing mode, and you can now add it back to the app by selecting the right region.
If the automatic search doesn’t find the device, try using manual add-on mode:
- 🔍 Press. + appendix.
- 📋 In search, type in your robot model (e.g. mi.robot.vacuum.mop.p).
- 📶 Follow the instructions on the screen to enter a password from Wi-Fi.
During the setup process, the application may suggest updating firmware. Be sure to agree to this, as new firmware versions often contain localization fixes and improve the work with servers in different countries.
Frequent mistakes and ways to solve them
The process of changing language and region is rarely smooth, and users often encounter a “Device already added” error, which means that the robot is tied to another account or region that is not currently active in the application.
To solve this problem, you either need to return to the old region and untie the device, or perform a complete reset of the robot to the factory settings (Hard Reset). Hard Reset is performed by long (more than 10-15 seconds) clamping the reset buttons, sometimes you need to use a clip to access the hidden Reset button.
⚠️ Warning: Hard Reset removes all data, including maps, schedules, and history, and use this method only as a last resort when other methods do not help.
Another common mistake is that you can't switch regions if you already have devices in your account. Xiaomi's security system can block the region change by requiring you to remove all the attached gadgets first, and you'll have to delete the devices one at a time.
💡
The main reason for the language problems is the discrepancy between the account region and the physical place of purchase of the device, and for full Russification, the account region must coincide with the region of sale (RF / CIS).
