Xiaomi’s humidifier is not just a household appliance, but a full-fledged smart home device that can automatically maintain a comfortable microclimate. However, many users face difficulties when connecting to the Mi Home ecosystem for the first time. Unlike conventional humidifiers, Xiaomi Smartmi or Viomi models require the correct setup through a mobile application, otherwise you will not be able to control them remotely or use functions like automatic humidity maintenance.
In this article, we will discuss the entire process from unpacking the device to solving typical errors (for example, when the humidifier is not identified in the application), paying special attention to the nuances that the manufacturer often misses in official instructions: Selecting the right region in Mi Home, setting up Wi-Fi for devices with limited protocol support and how to reset the device if something goes wrong. 2020–2026 Including Smartmi Air Humidifier 2/3, Viomi Air Humidifier and other compatible devices.
If you’ve tried to plug in a humidifier before, but you’ve encountered an error like “Device is not responding” or “Can’t add,” skip the first two sections and immediately jump to the troubleshooting section. For newcomers to the Xiaomi ecosystem, we’ve prepared a step-by-step guide illustrating the key points.
Preparation before connection: what to check
Before you start setting up, make sure you meet all the prerequisites. 90% of the errors when adding devices to the Mi Home are due to improper preparation, not a malfunction of the equipment.
First, check your humidifier compatibility with the app. Not all Xiaomi models are supported in the Russian Mi Home region. For example, some Viomi devices may require a switch to China (Mainland China) - we will discuss this below. The full list of compatible models can be found on the official website or in the Mi Home directory.
- 📱 Install the latest version of Mi Home. download the app from Google Play or the App Store. Version below 6.0.100 may not support new devices.
- 🌐 Connect to 2.4GHz Wi-Fi. Xiaomi Humidifiers don’t work with 5GHz networks. If your router only broadcasts 5GHz, turn on compatibility mode or create a separate network for smart devices.
- 🔋 Charging and water. Make sure the device is charged (if it's a portable model) and has water in it -- some humidifiers refuse to turn on without liquid.
- 📡 Distance to router: The device must be no further than 5 meters from the router during connection. Thick walls or interference from other gadgets can interrupt the process.
⚠️ Note: If you are using Mi Home in the Russian region, but the humidifier is not on the list of supported devices, do not try to connect it using "Add manually". This can cause a firmware failure).
Choosing a region in Mi Home: why it matters
One of the most common questions is, “Why isn’t my humidifier on the device list?” and the most common problem is the wrong region in the Mi Home app, because Xiaomi is splitting devices by geographic area, and some models (especially from the Viomi sub-brand) are originally designed only for the Chinese market.
To check the current region:
- Open Mi Home and go to Profile → Settings → Region.
- If Russia is there, but the device is not, try changing to China.
- After changing the region, be sure to restart the application and try adding the humidifier again.
| Region in Mi Home | Supported models of humidifiers | Features |
|---|---|---|
| Russia | Smartmi Air Humidifier 2/3, Xiaomi Smart Air Humidifier | Official support, Russian-language interface |
| China (Mainland China) | All models, including the Viomi and new prototypes | Interface in Chinese, possible account binding errors |
| Europe | Smartmi Air Humidifier 2 (limited) | May require a VPN for some functions |
If you have switched to China temporarily but want to return the Russian language, after adding the device:
- Bring the region back to Russia.
- Delete the app cache (Phone Settings → Apps → Mi Home → Memory → Clear the cache).
- Go to Mi Home again – the device will remain in the list, and the interface will be in Russian.
💡
If you've lost your humidifier from your device list after you change region, don't panic. Try adding it again through Add Device → Smart Home → Humidifier. This usually solves the problem.
Step-by-step: how to add a humidifier to Mi Home
Now, to the process of connection, follow the instructions strictly by step, and even one point can be missed.

Resetting Xiaomi moisturiser to factory settings
If the device was previously connected to another Mi Home account or you bought it used, a full reset may be required. This also helps if the humidifier "hangs" during setup or does not respond to commands from the app.

Care and maintenance: how to extend the life of the device
To make Xiaomi humidifier work without failure, it must be properly maintained. Here are the key recommendations:
- 💧 Use distilled or filtered water. Tap water with impurities leads to scaling and breakage of the ultrasonic membrane.
- 🧼 Clean the tank once a week. Wash the water tank with a soft sponge with vinegar or citric acid (1 tbsp. spoon per 1 liter of water).
- 🔄 Change the filter every 3-6 months. Smartmi Air Humidifier 3 models have a removable antibacterial filter, which can be checked at Mi Home» → «Condition of the filter»).
- 🌿 Store it in a dry place. If the humidifier has not been used for more than a week, drain the water and dry it, otherwise mold may appear inside.
If the humidifier started to work worse (weak steam, noise), try cleaning the ultrasonic membrane:
- Disconnect the device from the network.
- Pour the water and flush the tank.
- Pour a solution of citric acid (50 g per 1 liter of water) into the container and turn on the humidifier for 30-60 minutes.
- After cleaning, wash the tank with clean water 2-3 times.
⚠️ Warning: Never use abrasives or hard brushes to clean, they will damage the ultrasonic membrane. Also avoid chlorine detergents, which can leave a chemical residue that will then be sprayed into the air.
