Why you need a gas sensor in a smart home and how it works

In the sensor box you will find:

Note: the sensor does not work autonomously β a Zigbee hub is required to transfer data (for example, Xiaomi Mi Smart Home Gateway 3 or Aqara Hub). M2). Without a hub, the device will only beep when a leak occurs, but will not send a notification to the phone.

Preparation for connection: what to check before installation
Before you start installing, make sure that all the prerequisites are met:

The optimal location for the sensor:
- π For methane (natural gas): on the wall at a height of 1.5-1.7 m from the floor (methane is lighter than air and rises upwards).
- π For propane-butane (liquefied gas): at a height of 0.3β0.5 m from the floor (these gases are heavier than air).
- π« Avoid installation near ventilation holes, windows or air conditioners β drafts can distort readings.
The Zigbee network test is critical: if the signal is weak, the sensor will periodically shut down or be late with alerts.
- Open Mi Home and go to Profile β Settings β About the programme β Checking the Zigbee network.
- Click Start the test and bring the phone to the place of the future sensor installation.
- If the indicator shows a weak signal, install a Zigbee repeater (such as Xiaomi Smart Plug or Aqara Wall Switch) between the hub and the sensor.
β οΈ Note: If your region uses liquefied gas (propane-butane) and the sensor is tuned to methane (factory setting), it will be delayed or not react to a leak at all. Mode switching is done manually - see "Sensitivity settings".
Step-by-step instructions for connecting the sensor to the Mi Home
The process of adding the device takes no more than 5 minutes if the hub is already configured.
- Put the sensor in the power. Put the adapter in the socket. 220V. The device will emit a short sound signal, and the indicator on the front panel will start flashing red (connection waiting mode).
- Activate pairing mode. Press and hold the button on the back of the sensor for 5 seconds until the indicator starts flashing blue (hub search mode).
- Add the device to Mi Home. Open the app, go to Devices β Add the device β Sensors. β Gas sensor. The app will automatically find the sensor within 30 to 60 seconds.
- Choose a room and a hub. Specify the location (e.g., "Kitchen") and select the Zigbee hub to which the device will be attached. If there are more than one hub, choose the one closest to the sensor.
- Complete the setup. After the successful connection, the indicator on the sensor will light up green for 2 seconds, and the app will show a card of the device with the current status (Norma or Leak).
If the sensor is not located:
- π Restart the hub (turn off power for 10 seconds).
- πΆ Check the distance between the hub and the sensor (maximum 10-15 m without obstacles).

If the sensor is connected but turned off after a few hours, check the power saving settings in Mi Home: go to Profile β Settings β Energy saving and disable the option "Background Optimization" for the application.
Sensitivity and gas types adjustment
By default, the sensor is set to detect natural gas (methane). If you use liquefied gas (propane-butane), you need to manually switch the mode:
- Open the sensor card in Mi Home.
- Go to Settings (βοΈ) β Type of gas.
- Choose. LPG (propane-butane).
- Save the changes and wait for the sensor to restart (the indicator will blink yellow).
You can also set the trigger threshold (by default - 5% NPS):
- πΉ Low sensitivity (10% NPV) β suitable for rooms with frequent false positives (e.g., near a gas column).
- πΉ Average (5% NPV) β optimal balance for most kitchens.
- πΉ High (1% NPS) β for maximum safety, but higher risk of false alarms.
Do not use open fire or real gas to test the sensor.
- Purchase test gas for calibration (sold in gas equipment stores).
- Spray a small amount near the sensor (at a distance of 10-15 cm).
- The sensor should work within 10-20 seconds (blitzes red, sirens will sound).

What if the sensor is triggered for no reason?
Integration with other Xiaomi devices: automation scenarios
The main advantage of the Honeywell sensor is the ability to create automatic scripts in the Mi Home or Apple HomeKit (if you have Xiaomi HomeKit Gateway).

Frequent errors and their elimination
Even with the right installation, users face challenges. Consider typical cases and solutions:
Problem 1: The sensor switched on, but shut down a few hours later.

Problem 2: False positives in cooking.

Problem 3: The sensor does not respond to a real leak.

If the sensor is permanently shut down, check the load on the Zigbee network. In one hub, it is not recommended to connect more than 30 devices - this can cause conflicts. Break the devices into several hubs or use the Aqara Hub for a part of the sensors.
