Xiaomi’s smart kettles (including the Viomi and Mijia brands) are no longer exotic — they save time, allow you to remotely start a boil and integrate into the Mi Home ecosystem. But the first connection often raises questions: why the app does not see the device, how to connect to Wi-Fi correctly, or why the kettle disconnects from the network after 5 minutes? In this article, we will examine all the stages of connection – from unpacking to setting up voice control, as well as typical errors that are not described in the official instructions.
Important: the connection procedure may vary slightly depending on the model. We will focus on the current devices of 2022-2026 (Viomi Smart Kettle Pro, Mijia Electric Kettle). 1S, Xiaomi Youpin Kettle, but the basic principles apply to older versions as well.If your kettle is released before 2020, check compatibility with the latest version of the Mi Home app - some models require the use of Mi Home (China) or Aqara Home.
1.Preparation for connection: what to do before turning on the kettle
Before you connect the kettle to the network, follow a few mandatory steps, which will save 80% of the problems with the connection later.
- 📱 Install the app: Download the latest version of Mi Home (official website for Russia) or Aqara Home (if the kettle only supports this platform). VPN.
- 🔌 Check the socket: The kettle must be connected to the network 220V/50Hz without adapters. Using extension cords or network filters can cause an error. E1 (stress-free).
- 📶 Prepare Wi-Fi: The network should be running at 2.4GHz (5GHz not supported, VPN and make sure that the router does not block new devices (sometimes rebooting the router helps).
- 🔋 Base charging (for wireless models): If you have a kettle with a wireless base (Viomi) V-KETTLE1), Put it on recharge for 10-15 minutes before the first turn on.
Focus on the region in Mi Home. When you first launch, select a country, select Russia (or China if you have a Chinese version of the teapot). If you need to change region later, you have to remove all devices and reconfigure them!
2. Step-by-step instructions: how to connect a kettle to Wi-Fi via Mi Home
Now, let's get to the connection itself. Follow the instructions in strict order, and skipping steps often leads to errors. E2 (fails to connect to the network; or E3 (device fails).
- Turn on the kettle: Press and hold the power button for 3-5 seconds until the indicator blinks (the color depends on the model: blue, green or white).
- Launch Mi Home: Open the app, click «+» → «Add the device» → «Household appliances» → «If your model is not on the list, select "Other» → «Manual search».
- Select Wi-Fi network: The app will prompt you to connect to a 2.4 GHz network. Enter a password (registration is important!). If Wi-Fi is hidden, click Other Networks and specify SSID manually.
- Synchronization: Wait for the beep (short beep) and the indicator to blink. At this point, the kettle can reset several times - that's normal.
- Setting up a room: After successfully connecting, select a room (such as “Kitchen”) and give the device a name (such as “Xiaomi Teapot”).
If the app gives an error in step 3, “I couldn’t connect,” try:
- 🔄 Restart router and kettle (pull out the plug for 10 seconds).
- 📵 Turn off the mobile Internet (sometimes it interferes with the connection).

3. Typical errors and their solutions: what to do if the kettle does not connect
Even with the right actions, connectivity can go wrong, and we've put together real-world user cases and solutions that have helped 90 percent of the time.
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| E1 | Low voltage in the network or a faulty socket | Connect the kettle to another outlet without extension cords. Check the voltage with a tester (should be 220-240V). |
| E2 | Can't connect to Wi-Fi. | Restart the router, check the frequency (2.4 GHz only), turn off the guest network. If it doesn't work, reset the kettle (see section 5). |
| E3 | Device unresponsive (hang) | Pull the plug for 30 seconds, then turn it back on. If the error repeats, update the firmware (section 6). |
| E4 | Overheating or dry heating | Add some water (minimum 200 ml), check if the lid is closed. If the error persists, contact the service. |
A special case is that the kettle plugs in, but after 5-10 minutes it disconnects from Wi-Fi. This is a typical problem for routers with the function "Energy Saving" (on some models of TP-Link, Asus).
- Go to the router settings (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).
- Find the section "Wireless mode» → «Additional settings».
- Turn off the options “Energy Saving”, “Green Mode” or “Power Reduction”.
- Save the settings and restart the router.
