In May 2026, Xiaomi unexpectedly returned to its smartphones the feature of recording telephone conversations, which was removed from the firmware MIUI 13/14 due to the tightening of the privacy policy in Google Play. Now users of devices based on MIUI 15 and the new HyperOS can again save audio recordings of incoming and outgoing calls - but with important limitations.
It's important to understand that the returned feature only records the voice of the interlocutor (your microphone is disabled by default due to legal requirements). To fully record both parties, you will need workarounds, which we will also talk about, and also explain why some devices may not have an option even after an update, and what to do about it.
Xiaomi models support call recording in 2026
The call recording feature is not returned to all devices, and according to user testing and official announcements, the option is available on the following lines:
- ๐ฑ Flagships 2023โ2026 Mr.: Xiaomi 14/14 Pro/14 Ultra, 13T/13T Pro, 12T/12T Pro (after upgrade to HyperOS) 1.0+)
- ๐ฑ Mid-segment: Redmi Note 13 Pro+/Pro/13, POCO F6/F6 Pro, Redmi K70/K70 Pro
- ๐ฑ Budget models: Redmi 13C/13R, POCO M6 Pro (only on) MIUI 15)
- ๐ซ Not supported: Devices older than 2021 (Mi 11, Redmi Note 10, etc.), as well as models for the European market with firmware MIUI EU.
Check the firmware version in Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI Version. If you have HyperOS, the feature should be available by default. On MIUI 14, the entry will only appear after manually upgrading to MIUI 15 (see section below).
Why Call Recording May Not Be Available Even After Updating
Even if your smartphone is on the list of supported models, the recording feature can be hidden for several reasons:
- Regional restrictions: On devices for the EU, India and some other countries, the recording is blocked at the firmware level due to local privacy laws.
- Third-party firmware: Custom builds (such as Xiaomi.eu or PixelExperience) often remove the feature due to conflicts with Google policy.
- No update: Some models get HyperOS with a delay (for example, the POCO X5 Pro only started updating in June 2026).
- Hardware limitations: On budget chips (Snapdragon 4 Gen 1, Helio G85), the record may not work well or be stable.
To check if the feature is available on your device, open the Phone app, dial a number, and look at the call screen โ if there's a Record button, it's okay. If not, go to the next section.
How do you know the firmware region?

If you don't start recording after activation, check the permissions for the Phone application in Settings โ Apps โ Permissions โ Microphone. Even if you're not recording your voice, the system needs access to the microphone to initialize the function.
How to record both voices (your own + interlocutor)
By default, Xiaomi only records the voice of the interlocutor, and to save your voice, you will need one of the solutions:
| Method | Pluses | Cons | Instructions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manually switch on microphone | Does not require third-party applications | It doesn't work on all firmware. | When you call, tap on the recording icon โ โSettingsโ โ turn on โWrite down my voiceโ |
| Cube Call Recorder app | Records both voices and works on most models. | Requires root or ADB-commands for full access | Install from APKMirror, give permissions to access calls |
| Use a headset with a microphone | The legal method does not violate Googleโs rules. | The quality of the recording depends on the microphone of the headset. | Connect wired headphones with a microphone before the call |
Important: On European firmware (MIUI EEA), both voices are locked at the core level. The only workaround is installing custom firmware (e.g. Xiaomi.eu), but this voids the warranty.
Where records are stored and how to export them
By default, audio files of calls are saved in the folder:
/storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/calls/File format โ.m4a (AAC-codecs, bitrate ~64 kbps to transfer recordings to PC or cloud:
- ๐ Through wired connection: Connect your phone to your computer in File Transfer mode (MTP) And copy the folder calls.
- โ๏ธ Through the Cloud: Upload files to Google Drive or Mi Cloud (select files from the file manager menu) โ ยซShareยป โ ยซSave it to the cloudยป).
- ๐ Automatic synchronization: In the recording settings (Phone) โ Settings โ Record conversations) turn on the option โOutload in Mi Cloudยป.
The default storage time on the device is 30 days, to change this:
- Go to Settings โ Storage โ Free up the space.
- Slip on "Call Record Management."
- Select the storage period: 7 to 90 days or "No restrictions".
๐ก
Record files take up little space (~1 MB per minute of conversation), but when used actively, gigabytes of data can accumulate. Clean the folder regularly or set up automatic upload to the cloud.
What to do if the record does not work: Solutions
If the function is activated but the recording does not start, check these points:
โ ๏ธ Attention: On devices with Android 14+ (HyperOS) recording may be blocked due to new privacy rules. Before first use, allow manual access to calls: Settings โ Confidentiality โ Permits โ Phone. โ Recording calls.
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Gray recording button | No access to the microphone. | Check the permissions in Settings โ Applications โ Phone โ Permissions |
| Recording ends in 1-2 minutes | Limiting firmware to save battery | Disable battery optimization for the Phone application |
| Record files are empty (0 KB) | Conflict with another recording application | Remove third-party call recording software (such as ACR) |
| No sound on the record. | Activated mode "Only interlocutor" | Enable the recording of your voice in the settings (see section above) |
If none of the methods helped, try resetting the settings of the phone application:
- Go to Settings โ Applications โ Application Management.
- Find the phone and tap it.
- Select Warehouse. โ Clear the data.
- Warning: This will delete your call history and saved records!
Legal aspects: can the records be used in court?
The legality of telephone recordings is governed by the laws of your country.
- ๐๏ธ Russia: It is allowed to record conversations without notifying the interlocutor, if you are a participant in the conversation (Article 23 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
- ๐๏ธ European Union (GDPR): Consent of the other party is required, and use of the recordings without permission may result in a fine.
- ๐๏ธ Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus: Similar to Russia โ recording is allowed for personal use, but distribution without consent is prohibited.
- ๐๏ธ United States/Canada: Laws vary by state. In most cases, notice is required ("This call is being recorded").
In any case, it is not recommended to publish records in the public domain (social networks, messengers) without the consent of the interlocutor. For litigation, it is better to clarify the requirements for the evidence base with a lawyer in advance.
โ ๏ธ Note: In some countries (e.g. Germany, France), even storing records without consent is considered illegal. On Xiaomi devices for these regions, the recording function can be completely removed from the firmware.
