Xiaomi Redmi Note 8 is still popular due to its balanced performance and reliable performance. However, many users face the problem of forced VoLTE connection (voice over 4G), which does not always work steadily: call interruptions, poor hearing or fast battery discharge. In this article, we will discuss how to disable VoLTE on the Redmi Note 8 in all available ways, from standard settings to hidden commands.
Itβs important to understand that VoLTE (Voice over LTE) should theoretically improve communication quality, but in practice operators do not always implement it correctly. For example, in roaming or at the border of the 4G coverage area, a smartphone can βhangβ when switching to 3G, which either does not pass or interrupts calls. In addition, some users note that after activating VoLTE, the battery dies faster β this is associated with constant maintenance of a connection to the 4G network even in the background.
We tested all methods on the Redmi Note 8 with MIUI 12.5, MIUI 13 and MIUI 14 firmware (including global and Chinese versions). If your carrier does not support VoLTE or you just want to return classic calls over 3G, the following instructions will help solve the problem.
1. disable VoLTE via standard MIUI settings
The easiest way is to use the built-in options, but depending on the firmware version and operator, the menu may differ.
- Open the Settings app** (the gear icon on the desktop).
- Go to section. SIM-Maps and mobile networks (or Mobile Network in older versions) MIUI).
- Choose yours. SIM-card (if two of them).
- Find Enable VoLTE (or Improved Calls, 4G-call-up).
- Move the slider to the "off" position.
If the VoLTE item is not on the menu, it can mean:
- π± Your operator does not support VoLTE for this SIM-Cards (for example, some virtual operators).
- π On the smartphone installed custom firmware, where the function is hidden.
- πΆ The phone automatically switches to VoLTE only in areas with stable 4G-signal.
β οΈ Note: After VoLTE is disabled in some regions, calls may be temporarily interrupted when switching between regions. 4G and 3G. This is normal behavior, the smartphone reconnects to the network. If the problem persists for longer than 30 seconds, check the settings. APN (see section 4).
Disconnection via the engineering menu (code ##4636##)
If the standard settings donβt work, you can use the hidden engineering menu, which works on most Xiaomi smartphones, but you need to be careful not to change other settings so as not to disrupt the network.
Instructions:
- Open the phone application** (call).
- Enter the combination: ##4636## (no spaces).
- The test menu will automatically open.**
- Select the phone information (or phone information) tab.
- Scroll down to the Set preferred network type block.
- Select LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto (PRL) or 3G preferred (if you need to force 4G off).
- Click βUpdateβ** (or reboot your smartphone).
After that, VoLTE will be disabled at the communication module level. Please note that in some MIUI firmware, the engineering menu may be blocked. If the code does not work, try the alternative method from Section 3.

3. Alternative method: use of USSD-commands of the operator
Some mobile operators allow you to manage VoLTE settings through USSD-This is true if the smartphone does not provide direct access to the function. Below are commands for popular Russian operators:
| Operator. | USSD-command | Note |
|---|---|---|
| MTS | *111*4653# | After sending, an SMS will come with confirmation. VoLTE will shut down within 1 hour. |
| Beeline | *110*180# | A response message with code 1 (confirmation) is required. |
| MegaFon | *105*485# | It doesn't work in all regions. If you make a mistake, call for support. |
| Tele2. | *155*1*2# | VoLTE shuts down for 24 hours, then automatically switches on again. |
If your operator is not listed in the table, try:
- π Call support and request VoLTE disablement for your number.
- π Insert SIM-card to another smartphone (such as iPhone or Samsung) and disable the feature there.
- π± Use the operatorβs application (for example, βMy MTSβ or βMegaFon-Serviceβ), where sometimes there are hidden settings.
β οΈ Attention: USSD-If you have an error message after you enter the command, check the actual request on the operator's website or via the support chat.
4. Resetting mobile network settings
If VoLTE is turned on automatically after restarting, APN settings or network settings may have gone wrong, and resetting:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose yours. SIM-map.
- Click Reset Mobile Network Settings (or APN Reset).
- Confirm the action.
- Reboot your smartphone.
After discharge:
- π VoLTE should be turned off, as the smartphone will return to factory communication parameters.
- πΆ You may need to manually adjust. APN (Instructions are usually available on the operator's website.
- π± If the problem persists, check if there are network optimizers on the phone or if there are any. VPN, which may interfere with the connection.
1. Remember or take a picture of the current APN settings (path: Settings β Mobile Network β Access Points (APN)).
2. Make sure you have access to the internet via Wi-Fi (after a reset, mobile internet may not work).
3. Check the balance SIM-Cards β some operators block settings when the balance is negative.
4. Turn it off. VPN or proxy if they are active.-->
5. disable VoLTE via ADB (for advanced users)
If none of the above methods worked, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which requires connecting your smartphone to your computer, but gives you 100% results.
Step 1: Preparation
- π₯οΈ Install. ADB-PC drivers.
- π± On your smartphone, activate Developer Mode (7 times click on Version) MIUI In Settings β The phone).
- π Turn on Debugging. USB In Settings β Additionally. β For developers.
Step 2: Execution of commands:
- Connect the Redmi Note 8 to your PC via USB-cable.
- Open the command prompt (Windows) or terminal (macOS/Linux) in the folder with ADB.
- Adb shell settings put global devices (adb shell settings should appear) volte_enabled 0 settings put global enhanced_4g_mode 0
- Reboot your smartphone.
Once these commands are executed, VoLTE will be disabled at the system level, and the operator will not be able to force it to activate, and if you want to return the function, replace the 0 by 1 commands.
π‘
Before using ADB, check if the bootloader is unlocked on your Redmi Note 8. If not, some commands may not work. To find out the status, type in ADB:
fastboot oem device-infoDevice unlocked: true
6. Radical-method: replacement of firmware or core
If VoLTE is turned on automatically even after all the manipulations, the reason may be firmware with rigidly prescribed operator settings, in which case it will help:
- π± Install custom firmware (e.g. LineageOS or Pixel Experience) where VoLTE is managed flexibly.
- π§ Replacement of the modem core (radio-firmware) with a version without forced VoLTE.
- π οΈ Use of Xposed Disable VoLTE Module (requires root rights).
Warnings:
- β οΈ Castom firmware may disrupt other functions (for example, NFC camera).
- β οΈ Not all modified cores are compatible with the Redmi Note 8 (the risk of brickingΒ»).
- β οΈ Root rights strip warranties and increase vulnerability to viruses.
If you're not sure about your skills, it's best to go to a service center. wizards can turn off VoLTE at level. EFS-partition (where network settings are stored) without resorting to radical measures.
π‘
Turning VoLTE off through firmware is the last resort, and standard settings or settings are 90 percent of the time. ADB-Only use custom solutions if other methods have failed.
