Xiaomi Redmi 7 is still a popular budget smartphone, but its owners often face problems when using VoLTE technology (voice over 4G). Despite the promised improvement in call quality, many users complain about communication breakdowns, fast battery drain or the inability to make a call when active 4G. If you also want to disable VoLTE on Redmi 7, but do not know how to do it safely β this article is for you.
We tested all the current methods of disabling VoLTE on the firmware MIUI 10-14 (including global and Chinese versions) and selected three reliable ways: through standard settings, engineering menu and USSD- commands, and we will also analyze why VoLTE can work unstablely on the Redmi 7 and what is the risk of its forced shutdown. Importantly: some operators (for example, MTS) can avoid this, we will tell you how to turn on VoLLLLLLLLLLIN back.
What is VoLTE and why do you want to turn it off on Redmi 7?
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) is a technology that allows voice traffic to be transmitted over 4G networks instead of traditional 2G/3G. In theory, this should give a clearer sound and faster access to communication. However, in practice, especially on budget smartphones like Xiaomi Redmi 7, users are faced with:
- π Call breaks β the connection is interrupted after 10β30 seconds of conversation.
- π Increased battery consumption - the 4G module is in enhanced mode.
- πΆ Network switching problems β the smartphone βhangsβ in 4G and cannot switch to 3G/2G to make a call.
- π« Inability to make a call when the Internet is active (especially when roaming).
The reasons for these failures lie in the unoptimized MIUI firmware for Redmi 7 and conflicts with the settings of telecom operators. For example, in Russia, many base stations still do not fully support VoLTE, and the smartphone tries to force the technology to use, which leads to errors.
β οΈ Warning: Disabling VoLTE does not mean losing the 4G- Internet! You will use high-speed mobile internet before you do, but calls will go through 3G or 2G networks (depending on coverage).
Before you get to the instructions, check whether VoLTE is actually active on your device.
- Make a call and look at the network indicator in the top panel.
- If the signal level is marked with the words VoLTE or HD, the technology is turned on.
- You can also type in USSD- code ##4636## and go to Phone Information β there will be a VoLTE provisioned item.
Method 1: Disable VoLTE via standard MIUI settings
The easiest and safest method is to use the built-in MIUI options. However, some versions of the Redmi 7 firmware may hide this item. If you don't find it right away, try upgrading your smartphone to the latest available MIUI.
Instructions:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose yours. SIM-card (if two of them).
- Tap on the call by VoLTE (or VoLTE calls in English version).
- Move the slider to the off position.
- Reboot your smartphone so that the changes take effect.
If the VoLTE call item is not on the menu, it means:
- π± Your firmware does not support manual control of VoLTE (often found on Chinese versions MIUI).
- π‘ Your operator blocks this option (e.g., Tele2 or Iota may force VoLTE to be activated).
- π You must update MIUI to the latest version (see section below).
Check the current version of MIUI in Settings β About the phone
Make sure that SIM-card 4G (not-old SIM working with VoLTE)
Make a backup of contacts in case of failure
Charge your phone at least 50%-->
If the standard method didnβt work, move on to the next method, through the engineering menu.
Method 2: Disable VoLTE via the MTK Engineer Mode
This method is suitable for Xiaomi Redmi 7 on Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 processor (all versions of this smartphone are built on it). Engineering menu allows you to manually manage modem parameters, including VoLTE. Be careful: incorrect settings can lead to loss of network!
Step-by-step:
- Open the Phone app and enter the code: ##4636## Some firmware may require code: ##36446337###
- In the menu that opens, select Phone Information (or Phone Information).
- Scroll down to the Set preferred network type block.
- If you see Turn off VoLTE, tap it. If you don't, move on to the next step.
- Go back to the main engineering menu and select MTK Settings β Network Selecting.
- Find the VoLTE setting and set the Disable value.
- Save the settings and restart the phone.
| Parameter in the engineering menu | Value for disabling VoLTE | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| VoLTE provisioned | False | If True is active, VoLTE is active. |
| IMS Registration Status | Not Registered | With a successful shutdown |
| LTE Service | Disable | Disables VoLTE but leaves 4G for data |
| VoLTE Switch | Off | Outright technology shutdown |
β οΈ Warning: Some firmware MIUI may lose mobile internet on the VoLTE engineering menu after disabling it. In this case, return the settings to their original state or reset the network to Settings β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Reset network settings.
If the engineering menu is not available or changes are not saved, try the third method - through the USSD-commands of the operator.
Method 3: Disabling VoLTE using USSD- operator codes
Some Russian operators allow you to control VoLTE settings through special USSD- commands. This is the most versatile method, since it works regardless of the version of MIUI. However, not all operators support such commands - below is a list of current 2026 years.
Instructions:
- Open the Phone app and go to the dial tab.
- Enter the USSD- code for your operator (see table below) and press the call button.
- Follow the instructions in response from the operator (usually you need to confirm the disconnection).
- Reboot your smartphone.
| Operator. | USSD-code | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| MTS | *111*4653# | You may need to confirm SMS |
| Beeline | *110*180# | It doesn't work in all regions. |
| MegaFon | *105*4653# | The answer will come in the form of SMS. |
| Tele2. | *155*1*1# | VoLTE shuts down for 24 hours, then automatically switches on again |
If the USSD- code does not work:
- π Make sure you type it correctly (no spaces or extra characters).
- π Try sending the code through another device (e.g., a regular phone).
- π§ Write in support of the operator asking to disable VoLTE for your number.
π‘
If VoLTE is no longer available after you shut down, check if you have 4G Only on your network settings and switch it to 3G/2G (automatically) for stable communication.
What to do if VoLTE turns on on itself
Many Redmi 7 users complain that after a time, VoLTE is turned off again.
- π Automatic update of operator settings (especially MTS and Beeline).
- π± Reset network settings after the MIUI update.
- π§ Policies of an operator that compulsorily includes VoLTE for all subscribers.
To prevent the spontaneous activation of VoLTE:
- Turn off automatic network settings: Settings β SIM- Cards and Mobile Networks β [Your SIM] β Network Autosetting β Turn off.]
- Block the update of the operator configuration: Settings β Applications β Application management β Three points (menu) β Show system β Carrier Services β Disable.
- Use the 4G Switch app from Google Play β it allows you to block VoLTE at the system level.
- Set up APN manually: Remove the current APN and create a new one with your carrierβs options (without mentioning VoLTE).
How to check if VoLTE is enabled via ADB
If none of the methods worked, consider installing custom firmware (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience) where VoLTE can be disabled at the kernel level.
The impact of VoLTE shutdown on Redmi 7
Many users fear that disabling VoLTE will negatively affect the performance of the smartphone.
| Parameter | Before VoLTE is turned off | After VoLTE shutdown |
|---|---|---|
| Quality of calls | HD- sound (with good signal 4G) | Standard Quality (3G/2G) |
| Speed of connection to the call | 1-3 seconds | 3-5 seconds (depending on the network) |
| Battery consumption | Higher (the 4G module is more intensive) | Decrease by 5-15% |
| Stability of communications | Possible cliffs with weak 4G | More stable (calls go on 3G/2G) |
| Internet speed | 4G (up to 150 Mbps) | 4G (unchanged) |
As you can see from the table, turning off VoLTE doesn't affect mobile internet speeds -- you'll still be able to use 4G at full speed. The only noticeable change is voice quality while calling, but in the face of unstable 4G coverage, it's often a plus.
β οΈ Warning: If you notice that calls are interrupted more often than before after turning off VoLTE, the problem may be in settings APN or conflict with dual-SIM. Try temporarily disabling the second SIM- card (if any) and check for stable communication.
For those who travel frequently, it is important to consider that in some countries (e.g. Europe or the United States) operators may require VoLTE to operate on their networks, in which case they will have to temporarily turn the technology back on before traveling.
Alternative solutions: if VoLTE is needed but does not work well
If you are critical to use VoLTE (for example, due to frequent trips or job specifics), but it is unstable on Redmi 7, try these methods to improve communication:
- πΆ Update MIUI to the latest version: Go to Settings β About Phone β Update and check for updates. Newer versions often fix bugs with VoLTE.
- π Turn off battery savings for Phone and SIM-Manager: Go to Settings β Battery β Power Saving β Applications and add these system applications to exceptions.
If nothing works, and VoLTE is critically needed, consider buying a newer smartphone (like the Redmi Note 10 or POCO X3) that has better support. With Redmi 7, with its budget Snapdragon 632 modem, it can be difficult to achieve stable VoLTE performance.
