Connecting a Xiaomi smartphone to a car radio recorder via a USB- cable seems like an easy task β inserted a plug, selected a data mode, and ready. But in practice, users face a lot of nuances: the tape recorder does not see the phone, does not play music, charges too slowly or even refuses to recognize the device. In this article, we will analyze all possible connection scenarios, from the standard MTP- mode to bypassing restrictions through OTG- adapters and the developer settings.
Xiaomiβs smartphones (including the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5, Mi 11 and older versions) are aggressively power optimizing and MIUIβs own firmware, which sometimes blocks background processes. This can interfere with stable connection to the tape recorder. We tested the solutions on 15+ models of car headphones (from Pioneer to Chinese Joying) and identified universal methods that work 90% of the time.
1. Preparing Xiaomi phone for connection
Before you connect your phone to the tape recorder, make the basic settings on your smartphone, which will eliminate most of the problems with device recognition.
The first is to check the MIUI version and update the firmware. Older versions (below MIUI 12) often lack USB Audio support, which is critical for playing audio over USB. Update the software in the Settings menu β About the phone β System Update. If there are no updates, but the problem remains, try resetting USB (more on this below).
- π± Turn off battery optimization for the apps to be used (like Google Music or Spotify). path: Settings β Battery β Battery Optimization β All apps β select the right one and click βDo not optimizeβ.
- π Check the USB- cable. Use the original Xiaomi cable or the certified USB-C cable with data support (not all charging cables are suitable!).
- π Reset USB (current for MIUI 13+). Go to Settings β Additional β Reset β Reset USB.
If you are connecting your phone to a radio for the first time, we recommend you also turn off the screen lock (PIN, pattern lock) during the setup. Some head devices can not properly interact with the locked phone via USB.
2. Selection of regime USB-connection
When you connect your phone to a USB tape recorder, you'll see a request on your Xiaomi screen for a connection mode, and that choice will determine whether the tape recorder can read files, play music, or just charge the phone.
| USB mode | Description | Is it good for a tape recorder? |
|---|---|---|
| File Transfer (MTP) | Allows the tape recorder to view files on the phone as if on a flash drive. | β Yes (most versatile) |
| Photo transfer (PTP) | Only opens access to the DCIM folder (photo/video). | β No (restricted access) |
| USB-modem (RNDIS) | It is used to distribute the Internet over USB. | β No. |
| Charging the phone | Only charging, no data transfer. | β No (if you need music) |
| Audio Source (USB Audio) | Direct audio transmission via USB (like an external sound card). | β οΈ Yes, but requires tape-tape support |
Important: if the radio does not see the phone in MTP mode, try switching to PTP and back again β this sometimes βwakes upβ the connection. On some MIUI firmware (especially custom ones), the MTP mode can work unstable, in which case it will help to reset the USB- settings (see section 1) or install an alternative core (for advanced users).
If your radio supports USB Audio (such as the Pioneer AVH-X or Sony XAV-AX), choose this mode for better sound quality, in which case the phone will be perceived as an external DAC (digital-to-analog converter), which will reduce the loss of signal transmission.
Make sure that the cable supports data transmission
Select MTP mode on your phone
Disable Battery Optimization for Music Apps
Check that the radio is on USB (not AUX/Bluetooth)
Reboot the phone if the connection is not established-->
3.Solving problems: The tape recorder can't see the Xiaomi phone
The most common problem is that the tape recorder doesn't recognize the Xiaomi connected, despite the MTP mode being chosen correctly, and it can be caused by both the phone and the head unit, and let's take the solutions in order:
1.Protocol compatibility check: Older radios (until 2018) often only work with USB Mass Storage (UMS), which Android doesnβt support since version 4.0.
- π§ Use a OTG- adapter with a flash drive. Copy the music onto a flash drive and plug it into the tape recorder through the adapter.
- π± Install the USB Mass Storage Enabler application (requires root rights).
- π Update the firmware of the tape recorder (if available).
2. Reset USB settings on Xiaomi. MIUI has a hidden USB- configuration reset function that helps in 70% of cases.
Settings β Additional β Resetting β Resetting USB settings βAfter resetting, restart the phone and reconnect it.
3. Firmware problems MIUI. In some versions MIUI 12.5-14 is a bug that causes MTP It doesn't work with car head-mounted devices:
- π² Reverse to the older version MIUI (if possible).
- π οΈ Install custom recovery (TWRP) and run the MTP Enabler module through Magisk.
- π Enable Developer Mode and activate Debugging on USB (sometimes this helps stabilize the connection).
β οΈ Warning: If the tape recorder is hanging on the logo when you connect Xiaomi, the problem may be file system conflict: format the phone in FAT32 (not exFAT!) or use a separate SD- music card.
4.Configure music playback via USB
Even if the radio detector sees the phone, it can be difficult to play music, most often due to:
- π΅ Unsupported formats (e.g.,.flac or.wav on budget radios).
- π Incorrect folder structure (deep nesting or Cyrillic in titles).
- π Energy saving that kills the player's background processes.
To avoid problems:
- Place music in the phoneβs root folder (such as the /Music/) or on the SD- card.
- Rename files and folders to Latin (without spaces and symbols).
- Use.mp3 or.aac formats (they are supported by all tape recorders).
- In the player settings (e.g. Google Music) disable the option βStop Playing When Bluetooth is Disabledβ.
If the tape recorder plays music with pauses or stutters, the problem may be the bitrate of the files. Try converting tracks to MP3 192-320 kbps (above β not always better for automotive systems).
π‘
If the tape doesn't see the playlists, create the m3u file manually and place it in the same folder as the music. In the file, specify the relative paths to the tracks (e.g.,../Music/track1.mp3).
5. Alternative ways to connect (if USB is not working)
If standard USB connectivity fails, consider alternatives that are less convenient but often save you in situations where the radio is outdated or has limited functionality.
1 Connect via OTG- Adapter + USB flash drive If the tape cannot see the phone but supports USB- drives:
- Buy it. OTG-Adapter (e.g. Xiaomi) USB-C to USB-A).
- Put a music stick on it.
- Insert the adapter into the phone β the tape should recognize the flash drive as an external drive.
2.Use Bluetooth + USB for charging, if the main purpose is listening to music, not charging:
- Connect your phone to the radio via Bluetooth (in A2DP mode).
- In parallel, connect the USB- charging cable (select Charge Only mode).
- This will allow you to listen to music without wire and charge the phone at the same time.
3. Local area network streaming applications, for advanced users:
- Install the BubbleUPnP or VLC app on your phone.
- Connect your phone and radio to a single Wi-Fi network (for example, via your phoneβs hotspot).
- Start streaming music from your phone to the tape via DLNA/UPnP.
β οΈ Warning: If you are using Android Auto or Apple CarPlay via USB, Xiaomi's MTP connection may conflict with these systems. In this case, select Charge Only mode and use wireless media connectivity.
6. Optimizing the charging of the phone through the magneto
Many users complain that the Xiaomi phone is not charging or charging too slowly from a car radio, due to the current restrictions imposed by both the radio and the MIUI firmware.
To speed up charging:
- π Use a Quick Charge-enabled cable (such as the original one from Xiaomi or Anker).
- β‘ Enable the Quick Charging option in your phone settings (Settings β Battery β Fast Charging).
- π§ If the tape recorder has a USB- port marked 5V/2.1A, connect to it (usually it is highlighted in color).
- π± Disable all background applications that consume battery (navigator, instant messengers).
If your phone is running out of charge despite a USB connection, check:
- π Battery status (Settings menu β Battery β Status) If the capacity is below 80%, charging will be slower.
- π Quality of contacts in USB- magnetor connector (clean dust with alcohol).
- π± Energy saving settings: in Settings β Battery β Energy saving mode, select High Performance.

7. Frequent errors and their solutions
We have collected a table of the most common errors when connecting Xiaomi to the radio via USB and how to fix them:
| Mistake. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetol can't see the phone. | Protocol Incompatibility (MTP vs UMS) | Use OTG- adapter with a flash drive or update the firmware of the tape recorder |
| The phone is charging, but the music is not playing. | Selected "Charge Only" mode | Switch to MTP or USB Audio |
| Music is played with interference | High bitrate files or poor cable | Convert tracks to MP3 192 kbps or replace cable |
| Magnet "hangs" when connected | File system conflict (exFAT vs FAT32) | Format your phone or flash drive in FAT32 |
| Android Auto is not running | Conflict with the MTP regime | Select βCharge Onlyβ mode and connect via Bluetooth |
If none of the solutions worked, try resetting the tapes to factory settings (usually by holding the Reset button or through the menu). Also check if there is no physical damage to the USB- port on the phone - often after falls, the contacts go away and the connection becomes unstable.
