Why Xiaomi does not see headphones: all the reasons and ways to solve

You try to connect headphones to a Xiaomi smartphone, but the device stubbornly โ€œdoes not noticeโ€ them? The problem is encountered both with wireless models (AirDots, Redmi Buds, Sony WH-1000XM5) and with wired ones โ€“ from the standard 3.5 mm to USB-C. In 80% of cases, software failures are to blame, but sometimes it is hardware malfunctions or protocol incompatibility. In this article, we will analyze all possible causes, from basic to rare, and give clear instructions for elimination.

Xiaomi devices feature customized MIUI firmware, which sometimes conflicts with audio device drivers. For example, after upgrading to MIUI 14, many users found that the phone stopped seeing headphones in the list of available Bluetooth devices, although they successfully connect to other gadgets, and the problem may lie in the energy-saving MIUI algorithms, which aggressively disable background processes, including the Bluetooth module.

Before you take your phone to the service center, go through our checklist, and we've put together solutions for all sorts of scenarios, from "earbuds don't detect at all" to "only connect, but sound goes through the speaker." And if you're unique, at the end of this article, there's an FAQ with rare questions.

1. Checking basic settings: what you might have missed

Start with the obvious: sometimes the problem lies in the little things that users simply do not notice. For example, the Redmi Note 12 will not look for headphones if Bluetooth mode is turned off in the notification curtain, and the POCO X5 can โ€œmuffleโ€ the connection due to activated mode on the plane.

Here is what you need to check first:

  • ๐Ÿ”ต Bluetooth is on? Swipe your finger from top to bottom to open the Quick Settings panel, and make sure the Bluetooth icon is illuminated in blue. Some models (such as the Xiaomi 13 Ultra) may need to hold the icon to navigate to the menu.
  • ๐Ÿ”Š When you call or play music, click on the speaker icon in the notification bar and select Headphones (if connected, but the sound goes by).
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Wireless models (e.g. Xiaomi Buds 4 Pro) may not appear in the list of devices if the charge level is below 10.
  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Is Airplane Mode off? It blocks all wireless modules, including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Open Settings. โ†’ Connections and sharing โ†’ In the Airplane Mode and Deactivate It.

If all of the above is in order, but the headphones are still not visible, move on to the next section. Exception: if you use wired headphones with a 3.5 mm connector on models without an audio jack (for example, Xiaomi 12T), you will need a USB-C โ†’ 3.5 mm adapter - without it, the phone will not physically be able to identify the device.

2. reset Bluetooth settings: a universal solution

One of the most effective ways is to reset Bluetooth, which will remove all the stored devices and return the module to factory parameters, which works on all Xiaomi smartphones, from the Redmi 9A to the Xiaomi 14 Pro.

Instructions:

  1. Open Settings โ†’ Connections and Sharing โ†’ Bluetooth.
  2. Tap the three-point menu (โ‹ฎ) in the upper right corner and select Reset settings (on some firmware, the item may be called Clear cache).
  3. Confirm the action and restart the phone.
  4. After turning on, activate Bluetooth again and try to reconnect the headphones.

If there is no Reset option, use an alternative method:

  • Go to Settings โ†’ Applications โ†’ Application Management.
  • Find the Bluetooth app (or Bluetooth Settings) and open its page.
  • Click Warehouse โ†’ Clear the cache and Clear the data.

After resetting, the headphones should appear in the list of available devices, and if not, check if the energy saving mode blocks them (more on this in the next section).

3. Energy saving and background activity: the hidden limitations of MIUI

MIUI firmware is known for aggressive power optimization that sometimes interferes with Bluetooth. For example, on the POCO F5, the module can shut down after 5 minutes of inactivity, and on the Xiaomi 11T, it can block new devices from connecting in Battery mode.

How to check and correct:

  1. Turn off power saving mode for Bluetooth: Go to Settings โ†’ Battery and Performance โ†’ Battery Mode. Select Performance or Balanced (not Energy Saving!). Tap Mode settings โ†’ Additional โ†’ Background Activity and make sure Bluetooth is not limited.
  2. Add headphones to exceptions: Open Settings โ†’ Apps โ†’ Permissions โ†’ Auto Run. Find the app associated with your headphones (like Mi Earphones or Sony Headphones Connect) and turn on autorun.

Turn off MIUI optimization for Bluetooth:

adb shell settings put global hidden_api_policy 1

This command (executed via ADB on PC) disables hidden MIUI restrictions. Read more about setting up ADB in the FAQ.

After making changes, restart your phone and try to reconnect your headphones. If the problem persists, check if the headphone firmware conflicts with the MIUI version (see the updates section for more).

๐Ÿ’ก

If the headphones are plugged in but the sound is interrupted, try turning off Absolute Volume in the Bluetooth settings, a feature that sometimes causes MIUI 13/14 stuttering.

4.Firmware problems: when the software is to blame

Bluetooth malfunctions are often associated with outdated or โ€œrawโ€ firmware. For example, after upgrading to MIUI 14.0.4, many Xiaomi 12 Lite users complained that the phone stopped seeing AirDots Pro 2. In other cases, the problem occurs after a rollback to the old version of MIUI โ€“ the Bluetooth module may not work properly due to driver incompatibility.

What to do:

  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Update. MIUI to the latest version: Go to Settings โ†’ The phone. โ†’ Update. If you have an update, download it and install it. Check Bluetooth after you restart.
  • ๐Ÿ”„ Reverse to stable firmware (if the problem appeared after the update): Download the stable version MIUI For your model from the official Xiaomi website. Use Fastboot or Recovery to install (instructions are available on the forums). 4PDA or XDA Developers).

Update the headphone firmware:

Many wireless models (such as Xiaomi Buds 3T Pro or Redmi Buds 4 Active) have their own software. Launch a proprietary app (such as Mi Earphones) and check for updates.

If the problem occurs after manual stitching (for example, installing custom LineageOS), most likely, the build does not have drivers for your Bluetooth module. MIUI.

5. Hardware malfunctions: when without service can not do

If the software methods didn't work, the problem could be a physical breakdown, and here are the most common hardware reasons.

  • ๐Ÿ”Œ 3.5 mm connector is damaged or USB-C: Check if there is debris inside, bent contacts or traces of oxidation. On models without an audio jack (for example, Xiaomi 13), the problem may lie in the adapter.
  • ๐Ÿ“ก Bluetooth module malfunctions: If the phone doesnโ€™t see any wireless headphones (including other devices such as the Mi Band or speaker), the module could fail.
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Power problems: On some models (e.g. Redmi) 9C) Battery discharge below 15% shuts down power-intensive modules, including Bluetooth.
  • ๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Damage after falling or getting moisture: Even if the phone is working, the impact could have damaged the Bluetooth antenna or audio chip contacts.
