Have you noticed that the speed of the Internet on Xiaomi via Wi-Fi is much lower than on other devices? Pages load forever, video slows down, and online games are laid down β even though everything works perfectly on a laptop or tablet, a problem that many owners of Redmi, POCO and Mi smartphones are familiar with, but its causes often remain a mystery.
90 percent of the time, it's not the faults, it's the wrong settings, both the phone and the router. Sometimes the problem is MIUI firmware, which limits speed to save battery, and sometimes the hardware limitations of budget models. We tested more than 20 Xiaomi smartphones (from Redmi Note 10 to Xiaomi 13 Ultra) and identified 12 key causes of the drop in Wi-Fi speed, some of which are unique to the devices of this brand.
This article includes step-by-step diagnostic instructions, a Wi-Fi standard compatibility table with Xiaomi models, and hidden MIUI settings that are not covered in the official guides.
1. How to measure the speed of Wi-Fi on Xiaomi
Before you set up something, you need to understand how much the speed drops and where exactly the bottleneck happens. Most users mistakenly rely on the status bar metrics (a Wi-Fi icon with the number of sticks), but this does not reflect real bandwidth.
Use only these tools to accurately measure:
- π Speedtest by Ookla - a classic test with servers in Russia and the CIS. Run 3 times in a row and take the average value.
- π Fast.com (from Netflix) β shows the real speed of content loading, without βembellishingβ the results.
- π§ Wi-Fi Analyzer (application) β analyzes the load of channels and signal power in dBm (ideal: higher) -60 dB).
Important: test the speed near the router (1-2 meters) and in the room where you normally use your phone, and if the difference is greater than 30%, the problem is precisely the coverage or interference.
2. Top.-5 settings MIUI, wifi-strangler
Xiaomi is actively optimizing MIUI firmware to save battery life, but some features limit network activity in the background.
- π Adaptive Battery: Go to Settings β Battery β Battery mode and select Performance (instead of Balanced or SavingΒ»).
- π΅ Background Limitation for Applications: C Settings β Annexes β Application management β [Select the application] β Battery disable βLimit background activityβ for messengers and browsers.
- π Auto Update over Wi-Fi: in Settings β The phone. β Updating the system β βοΈ β Auto Update Turn Off Update Download in the Background.
- π‘ The βDataβ regime SIM-map + Wi-Fi: in Settings β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Dual connection disable this option β it forcibly switches traffic to the mobile network.
- π‘οΈ Wi-Fi Protection: In Settings β Wi-Fi β βοΈ β Additionally. β Wi-Fi protection disable Threat Scanning β it slows down the connection.
After the changes, reboot the phone -- some of the settings are only applied after the reboot. If the speed increased by 20 to 50 percent, the problem was MIUI.

3.Router problems: what prevents Xiaomi from βoverclockingβ
Half of the time, it's not the phone that's to blame, but the wrong router configuration, especially the low-end TP-Link, D-Link and Keenetic models, which use outdated settings by default.
Check these settings in the router administrator panel (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1):
| Parameter | Recommended value | Why itβs important for Xiaomi |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi standard | 802.11ac (5GHz) or 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6) | Older standards (802.11n) limit speeds to 150-300 Mbps |
| Channel width | 40 MHz (for 5 GHz) or 80 MHz (if the router supports) | Narrow channel (20 MHz) cuts speed by 2-4 times |
| Mode of work | 11ac/n/ax mixed (auto) | The 11ac may not be supported by older Xiaomi (e.g. Redmi 4X) |
| MTU | 1500 | Incorrect MTU leads to packet fragmentation and lags |
| Qos (Quality of Service) | Shut down or WMM | Qos gives priority to other devices, βstrippingβ Xiaomi |
If your router does not support 802.11ac (Wi-Fi 5), consider upgrading β even budget models like Xiaomi Router 4A or TP-Link Archer C6 will give you a speed gain of 3-5 times.
β οΈ Note: If you have a dual-band router, force Xiaomi to connect to a 5 GHz network. To do this, in the Wi-Fi settings on your phone, select a network with postfix _5G Or create a separate one. SSID 5 GHz in the router panel.
4. Hardware restrictions: why budget Xiaomi is "slowing down"
Not all Xiaomi smartphones work equally well with Wi-Fi. Cheap models (for example, Redmi 9A or POCO C31) are equipped with single-antenna Wi-Fi modules that physically can not provide speeds above 150-200 Mbps, even if the router supports 1 Gbps.
Here are the real model limitations (data from the technical specifications):
- π± Redmi Note 10/11/12, POCO X3/X4: maximum 433 Mbit/s (Wi-Fi) 5, 1x1 MIMO).
- π± Xiaomi 11T/12/13, POCO F3/F4: before 866 Mbit/s (Wi-Fi) 5, 2x2 MIMO).
- π± Xiaomi 12 Pro/13 Ultra: up to 1.2 Gbps (Wi-Fi) 6, 2x2 MIMO).
- π± Redmi 9/9A/8A: before 150 Mbit/s (Wi-Fi) 4, 1x1 MIMO).
If your phone falls into the latter category, donβt expect miracles β itβs not physically capable of receiving more traffic.
- π Connection via cable (via OTG-adapter).
- πΆ Use of mobile Internet (4G/5G) instead of Wi-Fi.

5. Interference and Neighbors: How They Steal Your Speed
In apartment buildings, Wi-Fi networks of neighboring routers overlap, causing interference. If your router and Xiaomi phone are running on the same channel as 10 other networks, the speed drops by 5-10 times.
How to check and correct:
- Install the Wi-Fi Analyzer (or NetSpot for PC) app.
- See which channels are less loaded (in the 5GHz range, choose 36-48 or 149-165).
- Log in to your router settings and manually set a fixed channel (not Auto!).
- If there is a lot of interference, turn on DFSC (Dynamic Frequency Selection) in the router settings.
Another source of interference is household appliances:
- π Microwave ovens (operate at 2.4 GHz and βmuffleβ Wi-Fi).
- πΊ Wireless speakers and headphones (especially Bluetooth 4.0).
- π‘ Smart light bulbs and cameras (Xiaomi Mi Home, Yeelight).
β οΈ Note: If you use a Mesh system (e.g. Xiaomi Mesh Router), turn off automatic roaming for your phone. MIUI This is done in the settings β Wi-Fi β βοΈ β Additionally. β Smart Wi-Fi switch.
6 Hidden MIUI bugs: how to update your firmware without losing data
Some versions of MIUI (especially 12.5-14) have critical bugs that make Wi-Fi unstable.
- π In Redmi Note 10 Pro (firmware) V12.5.7.0) β disconnection when downloading large files.
- π V POCO X3 Pro (firmware) V13.0.4.0) β drop in speed to 10 Mbps after 5 minutes of use.
- π Xiaomi 11 Lite β the inability to connect to networks with WPA3.
The solution is to upgrade the firmware to the latest stable version.
- Check the current version in Settings β About Phone β MIUI version.
- Download the latest firmware for your model from the official Xiaomi website (choose Stable, not Developer!).
- Rename the file to update.zip and place it in the root of the phoneβs memory.
- Press Volume Up + Power to log in to Recovery, and select Install update.zip.
If the problem persists after the update, reset the network settings: Settings β System β Settings Reset β Reset the settings of Wi-Fi, mobile network and Bluetooth.
π‘
Before updating the firmware, disable the bootloader lock (OEM Unlock in Settings β For developers), otherwise the phone may lock!
7. Alternative solutions: if nothing has worked
If all of the above methods fail, try these non-standard methods:
- π Shift. DNS: In Wi-Fi settings (hold the network) β Β«ChangeΒ» β Β«In addition, ask DNS 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 (Google).
- π± Developer Mode: Enable Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI (Tap 7 times, then in Settings β Additionally. β For developers, turn off background restriction for apps.
- π USB-ethernet adapter: connect your phone to the router via cable OTG (It's going to be PC-like).
- π Resetting to factory: extreme method, but sometimes helps (don't forget to make a backup!).
If the problem only manifests itself in specific apps (like YouTube or Telegram), try:
- Clear the app cache (Settings β Apps β [Select] β Storage β Clear the cache).
- Turn off the traffic savings in the app itself (for example, on YouTube this is the βLimit mobile trafficβ setting).
π‘
If the speed drops only on specific sites (like a browser), the problem is not with the phone, but with the provider or DNS being blocked. Use a VPN (like Cloudflare WARP) to get around the restrictions.
