You downloaded a new movie on your phone but want to watch it on the big screen of Xiaomi Mi TV or Redmi Smart TV? Transferring video from a mobile device to a TV seems like an easy task, but in practice users face lags, no sound or can not connect at all. In this article, we will analyze all the current ways of broadcasting content from wireless protocols to wired adapters, and also reveal hidden settings that will help avoid common errors.
Xiaomi TVs are unique in that they support multiple streaming technologies: the standard Miracast (built into Android), the proprietary Mi Share protocol, and are compatible with Google Cast and DLNA. However, the choice of method depends not only on the TV model, but also on the operating system of your smartphone. For example, iPhone owners will have to use workarounds, since Apple blocks live streaming through Miracast. We tested each variant on Xiaomi Mi TV 4S, Mi TV Q1 and Redmi Smart TV X - the results are summarized in a comparison table below.
Before you start setting up, make sure your phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (for wireless methods). If you use mobile Internet (4G/5G), some ways will not work. Also check the TV firmware version: older builds (below MIUI TV 3.0) may not support Google Cast. You can update the software through the Settings menu β About TV β System Update.
1. Wireless streaming via Miracast (for Android)
Miracast is a wirelessly-duplicated Android protocol that runs on most Xiaomi TVs (except the older ones) and doesnβt require additional apps to be installed, with the main advantage of minimal latency, which is critical for watching movies.
- π± Wi-Fi Direct must be enabled on the phone (sometimes called a Wireless Display or Smart View").
- πΊ On TV β Miracast is activated in the Settings menu β Connection and sharing β Wireless display.
- π Both devices must support the same Miracast standard (e.g. Miracast 1.3).+). Older smartphones (up to Android 8.0) may have compatibility issues.
Step-by-step:
- On Xiaomi TV, open Settings β Connection & Sharing β Wireless Display and select βEnableβ.
- On your smartphone (Android 9.0+), lower the notification curtain and look for the "Switch to Screen" button (or "Smart View", "Wireless Display"). On Samsung, it could be "Quick Connect".
- In the list of available devices, select your TV (the name will be MiTV-type).
- Confirm the connection on both devices. In 5-10 seconds, the phone screen will be displayed on TV.
If the image does not appear:
- β οΈ Check if it's blocking. VPN or a firewall on a phone, data transfer.
- β οΈ Restart both devices β sometimes Miracast freezes after previous sessions.
- β οΈ On some Xiaomi firmware, you need to manually enable Developer Mode and activate the Wireless Display option in the background (path: Settings) β On TV. β Software version β press 7 times on βVersionβ, then return to Settings β Additionally. β For developers).
Shut down. VPN phone-on|Make sure that TV and phone are on the same Wi-Fi network|Update the TV to the latest version|Reboot both devices-->
2. Broadcast via Google Cast (Chromecast)
If your Xiaomi TV supports Google Cast (all Android TV or Google TV models, like the Mi TV Q1 or Mi TV P1), you can use apps like YouTube, Netflix or Google Photos to directly transfer content, a method that doesnβt duplicate the entire screen of the phone, but streams only video, saving battery life.
How to turn on Google Cast on Xiaomi TV:
- Open Settings β Apps β System Apps β Google Play Services and make sure they are enabled.
- In the same menu, search for Google Cast Receiver and activate it.
- Run a supported app (like YouTube) on your phone, tap the Cast icon (a rectangle with Wi-Fi in the corner) and select your TV.
Limitations of the method:
- π« Not all apps support Cast, such as TikTok or VK Videos cannot broadcast content directly.
- πΆ The quality depends on the speed of Wi-Fi. If the signal is weak, the video will "brake".
- π Only some apps work on iPhone (e.g. YouTube or Google Photos).
Important: On Xiaomi TVs with firmware below MIUI TV 3.2, Google Cast may not be available. Check the version in the About TV menu.
π‘
If the Cast icon doesnβt appear in the app, try updating it to the latest version or reinstall it, and check if Google Play Services is disabled on your TV (sometimes after you reset).
3.Use of the Mi Share proprietary application
Mi Share (formerly Mi Drop) is Xiaomiβs own development for sharing files between ecosystem devices. Unlike Miracast, it doesnβt transfer the screen, but the film file itself, which excludes lags.
How to stream the film through Mi Share:
- Install the Mi Share app on your phone (link for Android). It's not available on your iPhone.
- On your TV, open Settings β Connection & Sharing β Mi Share and turn on the feature.
- On your phone, launch Mi Share, select the movie file, and tap "Send." Your TV will appear in the list of devices.
- Confirm the file on the TV. The movie will be saved in the internal memory (path: File Manager β Downloads) and opens in a standard player.
Advantages of the method:
- β No delays β video is played locally.
- β All formats that the TV plays are supported (.mp4,.mkv,.avi and others.).
- β It works even without the Internet (via a direct Wi-Fi point).
β οΈ Note: When transferring large files (>4GB) possible errors. Break the film into parts or use USB-accumulator.
4. Wired connection via HDMI (for maximum quality)
If you need to stream video in 4K HDR resolution or 1080p@60fps without loss of quality, wireless methods will not work β it is better to use HDMI.
- π± Adapter for the phone (depending on the connector):
- πΊ HDMI-cable (usually with an adapter).
Step-by-step:
- Connect the adapter to the phone and the HDMI cable to the adapter and TV (HDMI ports 1/2/3 on the back).
- On the TV, select the appropriate signal source (Source or Input button on the remote).
- The phone may need to allow image output (on Android, a βConnectedβ notification usually appears). HDMI-display").
- Start the movie and it will automatically appear on TV.
Comparison of adapters for different phones:
| Type of phone | Required adapter | Max, permission. | Sound support | Price (roughly) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Android (USB-C) | USB-C β HDMI 4K | 3840Γ2160@60Hz | Yes. | 1 500β3 000 β½ |
| iPhone (Lightning) | Lightning β HDMI (official) | 1920Γ1080@60Hz | Yes. | 3 500β5 000 β½ |
| Android (Micro-USB) | Micro-USB β HDMI (MHL) | 1920Γ1080@30Hz | Yes. | 1 000β2 000 β½ |
| Android (USB-C) | USB-C β HDMI + Power Delivery | 4K HDR | Yes (including Dolby Atmos) | 4 000β6 000 β½ |
β οΈ Note: On iPhones, there may be no sound when using non-original adapters. Buy only Apple certified accessories (e.g. Apple Lightning Digital) AV Adapter).

5. Alternative methods: DLNA and Plex
If standard methods don't work, you can use DLNA technology or Plex media server, which is suitable for streaming movies from phone to TV over a local network.
Method 1: DLNA (via file manager)
- On Xiaomi TV, open the File Manager or Media Center app.
- Select the DLNA tab or Local Network.
- Turn it on on the phone. DLNA-server (e.g., via BubbleUPnP or an embedded function in the Galaxy/Xiaomi).
- The TV will detect your phone as the source and display the files available.
Method 2: Plex (for organized media library)
- Install Plex Media Server on your phone (Android/IOS).
- Upload the film to the Plex library.
- On your TV, install the Plex app from the Google Play Store (if TV is on Android TV) or through the Mi App Store.
- Sign in to one account on both devices and select a movie to watch.
Pros and cons of methods:
- β DLNA β No need to install additional programs on TV, but the interface is inconvenient.
- β Plex β organizes films by genre, supports subtitles, but registration is required.
- β Both methods depend on the speed of the local network. If Wi-Fi is weak, there will be buffering.
π‘
DLNA And Plex is ideal for a large collection of movies, but it's not suitable for fast broadcast of one video. HDMI.
6. Problem Solving: Why the Broadcast Doesn't Work
Even with the right setup, the connection may not work. Let's look at the typical errors and how to fix them:
