Auto Recording Calls on Xiaomi 11: How to Set Up, Which Apps to Use, and Why the Feature May Not Work

Automatic phone recording on Xiaomi 11 is a useful feature for business negotiations, fixing important agreements or simply saving memorable conversations. However, many users are faced with the fact that the option is either missing from the standard settings or does not work correctly. In this article, we will discuss all ways to enable auto recording, including hidden system settings, third-party applications and circumventing the limitations of MIUI.

The feature of the Xiaomi 11 lineup (including 11 Lite, 11T, 11 Pro and 11 Ultra) is that the call recording function varies by MIUI version and firmware region. For example, in European and global builds, the option is often blocked due to legal restrictions, whereas in Chinese versions it is available by default. We tested all methods on current firmware in 2026 and highlighted those that work stably.

Why is there no built-in call autorecord on Xiaomi 11?

The main reason for the lack of feature is Google’s policy and local laws: since 2020, Google has banned developers from embedding automatic call recording in standard Phone apps for devices with Google services (GMS), this also affected Xiaomi, which was forced to remove the option from global firmware MIUI. However, in the Chinese versions (without GMS), the record remained.

The second factor is regional restrictions: in some countries (e.g. the EU), recording conversations without the consent of the interlocutor is prohibited by law, so Xiaomi blocks the software-level feature for devices sold in these regions, and even if you bought a smartphone in Russia or Asia, the option may disappear after updating the firmware.

Before setting up your auto record, check if your carrier supports VoLTE. → SIM-maps and mobile networks → [Yours. SIM] → Turn on VoLTE. If the option is active but the recording is not working, the problem is the firmware.

Method 1: Enabling Auto Recording through Hidden MIUI Settings

If your Xiaomi 11 runs on global firmware, try activating the recording through the hidden menu of engineering settings.This method works on MIUI 12.5-14 and does not require root rights.

Instructions:

1. Open the Phone app and dial the combination: ##6484## (code for recording module testing).
2. If the code doesn’t work, try ##646## (hardware testing menu).
3. In the menu that opens, look for the Audio → Call Record section (or similar).
4. Activate the Auto Record option and save the settings.

If the engineering menu doesn't open, your firmware has blocked access to these settings. ADB-team:

Method 2: Using a standard Phone application (for Chinese firmware)

If your Xiaomi 11 has Chinese firmware installed (without Google services), the call recording is already built into the system application.

1. Open the Phone app.
2. Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Settings.
3. Go to the Call Recording (or Call Recording) section.
4. Activate the Automatic Recording Switch.
5. Choose which calls to record: 📞 All incoming/outgoing 🔍 Only contacts. 🚫 Delete certain numbers

Important: in Chinese firmware, records are saved in a folder MIUI/sound_recorder/call_rec. The files are.amr and can be played by a standard player. If the folder is empty, check the permissions for the Phone app in the security settings.

Even after you set up the record, it might not work, and we've collected some common bugs and ways to fix them:

• 📱 Application does not see calls: check the permissions for "Phone" and "Microphone" in Settings → Annexes → Permit management.
• 🔄 Recording ends after 1-2 minutes: turn off battery optimization for the write application in Settings → Battery → Optimizing the battery.
• 🚫 Grey recording option: your operator does not support VoLTE. SIM Another operator or use Wi-Fi Calling.

A special case: on Xiaomi 11 Ultra with MIUI 14 firmware, users complain about noise in the recording. This is due to hardware audio processing. The solution is to disable Voice Improvement in the call settings or use an external microphone (via Bluetooth).

Before setting up your auto record, make sure you don't break local laws. In most countries, recording conversations is only allowed with the consent of the person you're talking to.

• 🇺🇦 Ukraine: consent of the second participant is required (Article 31 of the Constitution of Ukraine).
• 🇪🇺 EU: Recording without consent is prohibited (GDPR). Exception - business correspondence with notification.
• 🇺🇸 United States: laws vary by state, most require the consent of at least one member.

If you record calls for work, be sure to notify the person at the beginning of the conversation (for example, “The conversation is recorded to record agreements”), which will protect you from legal risks.

⚠️ Note: in some countries (e.g. Germany) the use of court records without the consent of the second participant may be considered inadmissible evidence.

Alternative ways to record calls without apps

If none of the above methods worked, try the workarounds:

1. Recording on the second phone: put the second smartphone next to it and turn on the recorder, minus the low quality and extraneous noise.
2. Bluetooth headset: Some headsets (such as Xiaomi Mi True Wireless Earphones) support recording conversations through a conjugated app.
3. Google Voice: If you use a US number, Google Voice allows you to record incoming calls after pressing 4 on the keyboard.
4. Skype/Zoom: Use these services for important conversations – they have a built-in conference record.

For root-enabled Xiaomi 11 owners, there is another option: install Magisk with a patch for recording calls, such as CallRecorderPatch, which bypasses Android’s kernel-level limitations, but requires technical skills and can disrupt banking applications.
