Do you want to show photos from your vacation on the big screen, stream a movie from Xiaomi on your TV or run a mobile game with TV output? There are at least 5 ways to do this, from wireless technologies to wired adapters. In this article, we will analyze each method with the features of MIUI firmware, supported video formats and the limitations of different TV models.
Importantly, not all of these are equally convenient, like Miracast, which has minimal latency, but requires support from TV. HDMI-Adapters provide stability, but they tie you to wires. We tested the instructions on Xiaomi 13 Pro, Redmi Note 12 and smartphones. POCO X5 with Xiaomi Mi TVs TV Q2, Samsung QLED and LG OLED โ All the methods worked, but with nuances.
If you need to get a video up and running, start with the Miracast section (the most versatile way). TV fit HDMI-connection.
1. Wireless streaming via Miracast/Wi-Fi Direct
Miracast technology allows you to duplicate the screen of your smartphone on your TV without wires using direct Wi-Fi Direct. The main advantage is the absence of lags (latency ~50 ms), which is critical for gaming or watching sports.
- ๐ The phone battery is quickly running out (on the 20-30% hourly).
- ๐ถ Miracast support is required on your TV (check in network settings).
- ๐ฎ Not all apps support audio output (for example, Netflix can block streaming).
How to connect:
- On your TV, turn on Miracast (usually in the Network โ Wi-Fi Direct or Screen โ Wireless projection menu). On Xiaomi Mi TV, the path: Settings โ Connection and Sharing โ Wireless display.
- On Xiaomi smartphone, open Settings โ Connection and Sharing โ Screen Transfer (on older versions of MIUI โ More โ Wireless Display).
- In the list of available devices, select the name of your TV. Confirm the connection on both devices.
- The phone will have a connection notification on its screen, and now everything you do on your smartphone will be duplicated on TV.
The TV and phone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (not necessarily, but recommended).
The TV is now in the "Screen Mirroring" mode.
Power saving mode is turned off on the phone (may interrupt the connection)
The sound on the phone is turned on at maximum (some TVs do not adjust the volume on Miracast)-->
An important nuance: if you have Xiaomi with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor (for example, Xiaomi 13 Ultra), the streaming will work smoother thanks to the hardware coding of H.265. On budget models (for example, Redmi 10A), you can slow down when playing video in 4K.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If you only see a black screen after connecting on the TV, but the sound is coming, check the settings. HDCP (Content protection: some applications (e.g. Disney)+) Solution: Try another way to connect or use Google Chromecast.
2. Connection through HDMI-adapter (Type-C/USB-C)
The most reliable way is to wire-wire through a USB-C โ HDMI adapter, suitable for all HDMI TVs, including older models without a Smart TV.
- ๐ No delays or breaks in connection.
- ๐ Minimum battery consumption (you can charge simultaneously through the same adapter).
- ๐ฎ 5.1 audio output is supported (if the adapter supports) HDMI ARC).
Which adapters are suitable:
| Model phone | Adapter type | Max, permission. | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/14 series, POCO F5 | USB-C โ HDMI (with DisplayPort Alt Mode) | 4K@60Hz | Adapters on the Realtek RTD2173 chip are recommended. |
| Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 | USB-C โ HDMI (without DisplayPort) | 1080p@30Hz | Cheap adapters may not work โ take with an active chip |
| Xiaomi 11T, Mi 10 | USB-C โ HDMI + Charging (3-in-1) | 4K@30Hz | Supports simultaneous charging of the phone |
Instructions for connection:
- Buy an adapter that is compatible with your Xiaomi model (see table above).
- Connect the adapter to the phone and HDMI-cable to the TV (select the desired source of the signal on the TV, usually the Source or Input button).
- A request for permission to display an image may appear on the phone - confirm it.
- If the screen is not duplicated, go to Settings โ Display โ HDMI Mode and select Duplicate Screen or Expand Screen.
๐ก
If the adapter doesnโt work, try turning on the developer mode on the phone and activating the USB debugging option (sometimes this solves the device recognition problems).
Xiaomi phones with MIUI 14 and later, when connected via HDMI, automatically turn on the Desktop mode (similar to Samsung DeX), if the TV supports mouse and keyboard. To turn off this mode, hold the Home button on the phone screen and select "Duplicate screen only".
3.Use of DLNA Smart TV-applications
If you only need to stream video (not the whole screen), and the TV supports DLNA or has applications like Xiaomi TV, VLC, Plex, this method will be the easiest.
- ๐ฑ Does not load the processor of the phone (video played on TV directly).
- ๐ You can control playback from the phone (pause, rewind).
- ๐ Playlists and folders with files are supported.
How to set up:
- Make sure your phone and TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- On your TV, open a media playback app (such as Xiaomi Video or VLC) and select the DLNA source or Local Network.
- On the phone:
The video will start playing on TV, and the phone will remain a control panel.
If the standard method doesnโt work, install the LocalCast or BubbleUPnP app on your phone โ they support more formats and even allow you to stream MKV with external subtitles.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some TVs (especially Samsung over 2019) do not support video playback in format HEVC (H.265) down DLNA. In this case, convert the files to H.264 using the HandBrake app or using another connection method.
What video formats are supported by DLNA?
4.Broadcast via Google Chromecast
If you have a Google Chromecast device (or a TV with Google TV built in), you can stream videos from Xiaomi through apps that support Cast. This method is convenient for streaming services (YouTube, Netflix, Twitch).
How it works:
- Connect the Chromecast to your TV and set it up via the Google Home app.
- Make sure your phone and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Open a supported app (like YouTube) and click the Cast icon (usually in the upper right corner).
- Select your Chromecast from the list of devices.
- The video will start playing on the TV, and the phone can be used for control.
List of apps that support Google Cast:
- ๐ฌ YouTube, Netflix, Disney+
- ๐ต Spotify, Apple Music (Audio only)
- ๐ฑ Google Photos (Showing photos and videos)
- ๐ฎ Twitch, NVIDIA GeForce NOW (play-off)
If you need to stream the full screen (not just videos from apps), use the Transmit screen feature in Google Home:
- Open Google Home โ Choose your Chromecast.
- Press Transmit screen โ Transmit audio.
- Confirm the broadcast.
๐ก
Chromecast is the best choice for streaming services, but for local files, DLNA or Miracast are more convenient.
5. XiaoAI feature for Xiaomi TVs
If you have a Xiaomi Mi TV (or another with XiaoAI support), you can use proprietary wireless broadcast technology, which is faster than Miracast and supports additional features, such as voice control.
How to connect:
- On the Xiaomi TV, open Settings โ XiaoAI โ Wireless projection.
- On Xiaomi phone, go to Settings โ Connection and Sharing โ Screen Transfer.
- In the list of devices, select your TV (it will be marked with the icon XiaoAI).
- Confirm the connection on both devices.
Benefits of XiaoAI:
- ๐ Support for voice commands (e.g., โXiaoAI, play the movie on YouTube").
- ๐ฑ Automatic synchronization of the clipboard between phone and TV.
- ๐ฎ Optimized for gaming (less lag than Miracast).
Limitations:
- โ It only works with Xiaomi TVs (or devices that have XiaoAI installed).
- โ On phones with custom firmware (not MIUI) may not work.
๐ก
If you have a Xiaomi TV and a MIUI 13+ phone, try enabling the Quick Connection option in the XiaoAI settings, which will speed up the synchronization of devices when reconnected.
6. Problem Solving: No sound, lags, connection cuts off
Even with the right setup, there can be problems, and let's look at the most common ones and their solutions.
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| No sound when broadcasting | The phone has the wrong sound source. | In the notification bar, click on the broadcast notification and select Transmit the sound to TV. |
| Video slows or tears | Weak Wi-Fi signal or network congestion | Connect your phone and TV to a 5 GHz network or use a wired connection |
| TV can't find the phone | Wi-Fi Direct or Miracast is disabled on TV | Restart both devices and enable Detection Mode in the TV network settings |
| Black screen at HDMI-connection | Incompatible adapter or screen resolutions | Try another adapter or manually set 1080p resolution in your phoneโs HDMI settings |
| Applications block broadcasting (Netflix, Disney+) | DRM (Content Protection) Limitations | Use Google Chromecast or the official TV app |
If nothing helps, try resetting your phoneโs network settings:
- Go to Settings โ Wi-Fi โ Additional โ Reset network settings.
- Reboot the phone and the TV.
- Repeat the connection attempt.
โ ๏ธ Note: Xiaomi phones with a blocked bootloader may have problems with Miracast broadcasting due to restrictions MIUI. If you get an error โDisabled to connect to the deviceโ, try unlocking the bootloader through the official Mi Unlock tool (but this voids the warranty!).
