Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro remains one of the most popular smartphones of the brand due to the balance of price and functionality. However, many users face a problem: the standard app โPhoneโ does not always offer the option of recording conversations. In this article, we will discuss all working ways to enable recording of calls, from built-in MIUI tools to third-party solutions, given regional restrictions and firmware version.
It is important to understand that the ability to record depends on three factors: version. MIUI (Global, Chinese or European, processor models (Snapdragon) 720G Note 9 Pro does not block the feature at the hardware level and the legal restrictions of your country. MIUI 14) and only working solutions were collected.
Why Xiaomi Note 9 Pro may not have a call record
The manufacturer deliberately restricts the recording function in some regions due to legal nuances, such as in the EU and the US, recording conversations without the consent of the interlocutor may violate privacy laws. Xiaomi removes this option from global firmware (MIUI Global), but leaves it in Chinese versions (MIUI China).
Other reasons for lack of function:
- ๐ฑ An outdated version MIUI โ firmware MIUI 12 The record may have worked differently or not at all.
- ๐ง Google service disabled โ some telephony features are dependent on Google Dialer, which may conflict with a standard app.
- ๐ต Telecom operator โ rare, but some mobile operators block recording at the network level (for example, in corporate tariffs).
- ๐ Root rights or custom firmware โ modified versions of Android can break standard features.
If your Redmi Note 9 Pro is purchased from the official Xiaomi store for Russia or Europe, chances are you have global firmware without a record. Check the version in Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI Version. Chinese devices (with the CN suffix in the model) usually have this feature by default.
Method 1: Enable recording via the standard Phone app (for MIUI China)
If you have a Chinese firmware (MIUI China), the call recording is already built into the Phone app, but you need to activate it.
- Open the phone application (pipe icon).
- Move to the โฎ (three-point) โ Settings โ Recording calls.
- Activate the โRecord All Callsโ switch or select โRecord Only Selected Callsโ.
- Specify the location of the file storage (by default - folder) MIUI/sound_recorder/calls inner-memory).
After activation during the call, a record button (red circle) will appear next to the hands-free and hold keys. Recorded files will be in.amr or.mp3 format with date and number tags.

If the recording button doesnโt appear even after the feature is turned on, try resetting the Phone app settings to Settings โ Apps โ App Management โ Phone โ Storage โ Clear Data. This wonโt delete your contacts, but will reset your individual settings.
Method 2: Using Google Phone (Google Dialer) for global firmware
On devices with MIUI Global, the standard Phone app does not have a recording feature, but it can be added via Google Phone (the official dialer from Google), which works on all versions of the Redmi Note 9 Pro, including models with the Snapdragon 720G.
Instructions for installation and setting:
- Download Google Phone from Google Play.
- Launch the application and allow all the permissions you request (contacts, phone, microphone, storage).
- Go to the settings of Google Phone: โฎ โ Settings โ Recording calls.
- Enable the option to โRecord all callsโ or set up rules for individual contacts.
- Make Google Phone the default app for calling Settings โ Apps โ By default โ Phone App.
Limitations of the method:
- ๐ซ It doesnโt work in some countries (e.g. India, Google blocks the entry due to local laws).
- ๐ Records are saved to Google Drive cloud, which can be inconvenient with poor internet.
- ๐ Increased battery consumption due to background activity of the application.
Install the application from the official store
Allow access to contacts and microphone
Make Google Phone the primary calling app
Check for free space on Google Drive-->
Method 3: Third-party applications for recording calls
If none of the above methods worked, we've got a third-party application option, and we've tested 5 popular solutions and we've selected the two most reliable ones.
| Annex | Free version | Record of both interviewees | Save to the cloud | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cube Call Recorder | Yeah (with ads) | Yes. | Google Drive, Dropbox | Requires root for some devices |
| Call Recorder by Lovekush | Yes (limiting 50 records) | Yes. | Local storage. | It doesnโt work on Android 12+ without additional settings. |
| Truecaller | Yes. | No (only your voice) | The Truecaller Cloud | Registration and access to SMS |
Selection recommendations:
- ๐ฒ For Android 11 and later, Cube Call Recorder is better suited โ it bypasses Googleโs restrictions on recording through a microphone.
- ๐ If you want maximum privacy, choose Call Recorder by Lovekush with local save.
- ๐ For quick customization without unnecessary permissions, try Truecaller, but note that only your voice is recorded.
โ ๏ธ Note: Call recording apps may conflict with Xiaomi's energy-saving modes. Add the selected application to auto-run exceptions before using: Settings โ Battery โ Choice of applications โ [name] โ No restrictions.
Method 4: Manually enable through an engineering menu (for power users)
Some versions of MIUI have their call recording hidden in the engineering menu, and this method requires caution, because incorrect changes can disrupt the telephony.
- Open the Phone app and enter the code ##4636##.
- In the menu that appears, select โPhone Informationโ.
- Scroll down to the "Turn on VoLTE provisioned flag" section and activate it.
- Return to the main engineering settings menu and select Call Settings.
- Find the Voice Call Recording option and turn it on.
- Reset the device.
After the reboot, a recording button should appear in the standard Phone app, but only for calls via VoLTE/4G. Normal calls (2G/3G) will not be recorded.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
Legal aspects of call recording: what you need to know
Before you turn on the entry, please read the regulations of your country. Most regions have the following rules:
- ๐ท๐บ Russia: Recording of conversations is allowed without notifying the interlocutor if you are a participant in the conversation (Article 23 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation.
- ๐ช๐บ European Union: Most countries (Germany, France) require the consent of both interlocutors, and the violation can be fined up to 20 million euros (GDPR).
- ๐บ๐ธ U.S.: Laws vary by state, California and New York require consent from all parties, Texas only one.
- ๐ฎ๐ณ India: Recording without consent is prohibited and punishable under article 66E IT Act (up to 3 years in prison).
If you plan to use the records for legal purposes (e.g., to resolve disputes with banks or support services), notify the person in advance of the recording, such as: "The conversation is recorded to record information. Do you mind?" This will protect you from accusations of privacy violations.
โ ๏ธ Note: Some apps (such as banking or WhatsApp messengers) block the recording of calls through standard means, in which case only a second phone with a voice recorder on will help.
Where records are stored and how to export them
Depending on the chosen method, records are stored in different places:
| Method of recording | The path to files | Format | How to export |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Application (MIUI China) | /storage/emulated/0/MIUI/sound_recorder/calls/ | .amr or.mp3 | Connect your phone to your PC or use a file manager |
| Google Phone | Google Drive (Call Recordings folder) | .mp3 | Download via the browser or Google Drive app |
| Cube Call Recorder | /storage/emulated/0/CubeBackup/ | .mp3 or.wav | Export through the built-in Share function in the application |
| Call Recorder by Lovekush | /storage/emulated/0/CallRecordings/ | .amr | Sending by email or messengers directly from the application |
For backup of records:
- Connect the Redmi Note 9 Pro to your computer via USB (select File Transfer Mode).
- Copy the folder with the records to the hard drive.
- For cloud backup, use Google Drive, Yandex Drive or Telegram (send files to yourself in Save Messages).
Tip: If the recordings take up a lot of space, convert them to.mp3 with a bitrate of 64 kbit / s โ this is enough for legibility of voice.
๐ก
Clean your records folder regularly, which can take up several gigabytes of memory over time, and the write application settings usually have the option of automatically deleting old files (for example, those older than 30 days).
