Voice over 4G (VoLTE) allows you to call with higher sound quality, connect faster and save battery power. However, on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones, this feature is often disabled by default - either because of the operator's settings or because of the features of the MIUI firmware. If you see a 3G or H+ icon in the status bar during the call instead of 4G, then VoLTE is not active.
In this article, we have 3 proven ways to enable VoLTE on any Redmi (Redmi Note 4 to Redmi 13 Pro), including hidden engineering menu settings, and we will also discuss why the function may not work even after activation, and what to do if the operator does not support the technology. All instructions are tested on current versions of MIUI 14/15 and HyperOS.
1. Verify support for VoLTE by your smartphone and operator
Before setting up your phone, make sure that:
- π± Your Xiaomi Redmi supports VoLTE. For a full list of compatible models, see the table below.
- π‘ Your mobile operator provides VoLTE service in your region (check on the official website or by support number).
- πΆ It's active on the phone. SIM-support-card 4G (VoLTE does not work on 2G/3G).
| Xiaomi Redmi Model | Support for VoLTE | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 12/13 Pro+ | β Yes. | It works on all firmware, including HyperOS. |
| Redmi 10/11 Series | β Yes. | Upgrade to MIUI 13+ is required |
| Redmi Note 9/10 Pro | β Yes. | Some operators need manual activation. |
| Redmi 8/8A | β οΈ Partially. | Depends on the region and the firmware version |
| Redmi 6/6A and older | β No. | Hardware incompatibility |
How to check the current status of VoLTE:
- Make an outgoing call.
- Look at the network indicator in the top panel: πΆ 4G VoLTE β the function is active. πΆ 3G/H+ β VoLTE is offline.
β οΈ Note: If your operator does not support VoLTE (for example, Tele2 in some regions), no instructions will help).
2. Method 1: Enabling VoLTE through standard MIUI settings
The easiest method is to activate the feature in the settings menu. It works on most Redmi models with MIUI 12 and later.
Step-by-step:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose yours. SIM-card (if there are several).
- Tap on the network type (or preferred network type).
- Choose 4G (preferably) or 4G/3G/2G (auto).
- Go back and find the VoLTE Call option (or Improved Calls) and switch the slider to the on position.

Method 2: Activate VoLTE through the Engineering Menu (for experienced)
If the standard method didn't work, try turning on VoLTE through the hidden engineering menu. Careful: the wrong actions here could disrupt the network!
Instructions:
- Open the Phone app and type the combination: ##4636## Some models may require: #86583###
- Select Phone Information (or Phone Information).
- Scroll down to the Set preferred network type section.
- Select LTE only or LTE/WCDMA/GSM auto.
- Find the VoLTE provisioned option and set the Enabled value.
- Save the settings and restart the phone.
On Redmi models with MediaTek processor (e.g. Redmi 9A, Redmi 10A), the engineering menu may not be available, in which case use method 3 or contact the operator.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
β οΈ Warning: Changing the settings in the engineering menu may cause the mobile network to crash. If the connection is lost after settings, reset the network to Settings β Resetting settings β Resetting network settings.
Method 3: Enabling VoLTE via ADB (for advanced users)
If previous methods have failed, try activating VoLTE using the ADB-It requires you to connect the phone to the computer.
What you need:
- π₯οΈ Computer with Windows/Linux/macOS.
- π USB-cable (original).
- π¦ Installed drivers Xiaomi and ADB Tools.
- π§ Included debugging by USB (Settings β The phone. β Version. MIUI β 7 times to tap according to the version β return to β For developers β Debugging by USB).
Step-by-step:
- Connect Redmi to your computer and allow debugging.
- Open the command prompt (Windows) or terminal (Linux/macOS) in the adb folder.
- Enter the commands in turn: adb shell settings put global volte_vt_enabled 1 settings put global enhanced_4g_lte 1 settings put global lte_vt_enabled 1 exit
- Reboot the phone.
After the reboot, check the VoLTE status during the call. If the feature does not work, try the additional command:
adb shell am start -n com.android.phone/.settings.VolteEnableActivityπ‘
If so, ADB-VoLTE commands do not appear, check if your operator blocks it. Some providers (for example, Tele2) require a separate activation of the service through the Internet. USSD-request.
5. firmware update to support VoLTE
On older versions of MIUI (below 12), VoLTE may be missing due to software limitations.
How to update MIUI:
- Go to Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click Check Updates and wait for the latest version to download.
- If the update is not, download the firmware manually from the official Xiaomi website and install through System Update β Three-point β Select a firmware file.
Which versions of MIUI support VoLTE:
- π± MIUI 14/15 HyperOS β Full support on all compatible models.
- π± MIUI 12/13 β manual activation may be required.
- π± MIUI 11 and below β VoLTE is unstable or non-existent.
β οΈ Note: When you manually install firmware, never use files marked Fastboot unless you are sure of what you are doing. Wrong firmware can brick your device. For a secure update, choose files with the.zip extension and the Recovery tag.
π‘
Update MIUI Until the latest version, it's the most reliable way to get VoLTE support without manual settings. SIM-Maps again: sometimes the VoLTE option only appears after a reboot.
6. Problem Solving: VoLTE doesn't work even after setting up
If you have completed all the steps, but VoLTE is still not activated, check the following points:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| VoLTE is turned on, but when you call it switches to 3G | Weak 4G signal | Move to the area with the best coverage or contact the operator |
| VoLTE option is not available in the settings | Outdated firmware or operator lock | Update MIUI or contact the operator |
| VoLTE works, but the sound is interrupted. | Conflict with other network settings | Reset network settings in Settings β Reset settings |
| After activation of VoLTE mobile Internet disappears | Wrong APN settings | Update your APN configuration manually (request settings from the operator) |
Additional steps for diagnosis:
- π Restart your phone in Safe Mode (click the power button) β Restart in Safe Mode. If VoLTE is running, the problem is in one of the installed applications.
- πΆ Check if the mode is enabled Traffic Saving in the settings SIM-map.
- π§ Install alternative call software (like Google Phone) that supports VoLTE regardless of system settings.
If nothing helps, contact the Xiaomi service center β the problem may be a hardware malfunction of the modem.
7. VoLTE on Redmi with custom firmware (LineageOS, Pixel Experience)
On informal firmware (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience), VoLTE may not work well or be stable.
For firmware based on AOSP (Android Open Source Project):
- Make sure the firmware supports VoLTE for your model (check out the XDA Developers forum).
- In the settings SIM-Enable the Enhanced option 4G LTE Mode (can be called VoLTE or VoLTE) IMS).
- If you donβt have an option, install the Magisk module with a VoLTE patch (e.g. IMS Fix).
For MIUI-based firmware (repackaged):
- π Try resetting your network settings (Settings) β Resetting settings β Resetting network settings).
- π¦ Refuse the phone to the official version MIUI, If VoLTE is critically important.
β οΈ Note: VoLTE may conflict with Magisk or Xposed modules on custom firmware. If VoLTE is missing after installing the modifications, disable all modules and check the function again.
