Broadcasting a Xiaomi smartphone screen to a laptop offers many opportunities, from showcasing presentations to streaming games or watching movies on the big screen. However, many users face problems when trying to organize such a connection - the laptop does not see the device, then lags arise, then root access is required. In this article, we will analyze all the current ways of mirroring the screen (including hidden MIUI functions), their pros and cons, and also give a checklist to eliminate typical errors.
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices feature built-in Miracast protocol support and proprietary solutions like Mi Share, which often run more stable than universal tools like Google Cast. But not everyone knows that some models (such as Xiaomi 13 Pro or Redmi Note 12) have additional options in Settings โ Connections and Sharing. We tested all methods on current versions of MIUI 14/15 and highlighted those that are guaranteed to work without root rights.
Important: if you want to stream without delay (for example, for games), the methods with a USB connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi will be priority. For simple tasks like showing photos, 2.4 GHz will do, but the picture quality will be worse. Also note that on laptops running Windows 11, the mirroring setting is different from Windows 10, we will discuss this separately.
1. Broadcast via Miracast (wireless method)
Miracast is the most versatile wireless screen transfer method, and itโs built into most Xiaomi devices since Redmi 5 (2017), with the main advantage of not having to use the Internet: itโs enough that both devices support the standard and are on the same Wi-Fi Direct network.
To activate the broadcast:
- On the phone, open Settings โ Connections and Sharing โ Screen Broadcast (on some models, the path may differ: Settings โ Screen โ Broadcast).
- Enable the Wireless Display (or Miracast) option.
- On a laptop: ๐ฅ๏ธ Windows 10/11: press Win + K, select your phone from the list. ๐ง Linux: install gnome-network-displays or scrcpy (more in the section about the Linux version) USB). ๐ macOS: Use AirPlay with additional utilities like 5KPlayer.
If your laptop canโt see your phone, check:
- ๐ Is the firmware updated on both devices (especially Xiaomi โ in older versions) MIUI There were bugs with Miracast).
- ๐ถ Do both devices connect to the same Wi-Fi network (even if you use Wi-Fi Direct).
- ๐ Is it off? VPN Firewalls that block local connection.
โ ๏ธ Note: On some Xiaomi models (e.g. Mi 11 Ultra), Miracast may be hidden. To activate it, go to Settings โ About the phone, tap 7 times on the version MIUI, Then go back to the additional settings. โ Lab and turn on the Wireless Display.
2. USB connection (scrcpy โ without root and lags)
method USB โ It is the most stable and suitable for tasks where minimal latency is important (for example, for streaming games or working with graphic editors). POCO F5 and Black Shark 5.
Instructions for Windows/macOS/Linux:
- Download scrcpy from the official GitHub.
- Turn on the developer mode on the phone (go to Settings โ About Phone โ MIUI version, tap 7 times).
- Activate USB Debugging in Settings โ Additional settings โ For developers.
- Connect your phone to your laptop via a USB-C cable (preferably original).
- Run scrcpy from the command line: scrcpy --bit-rate 8M --max-size 1080 (the options --bit-rate and --max-size adjust picture quality).
Advantages of the method:
- ๐ฎ Delay less than 50ms (ideal for gaming).
- ๐ Does not drain the battery of the phone (power comes from the laptop).
- ๐ ๏ธ It works even on older models like Redmi. 4X.
USB debugging enabled
ADB drivers installed
The cable supports data transfer (not just charging)
The laptop has power saving mode disabled for USB-port-->
โ ๏ธ Note: If scrcpy is connected to a device unauthorized error, check the phone's trust-seeking pop-up. Some Xiaomi firmware may be hiding behind other notifications.
3.Using Mi Share (branded solution from Xiaomi)
The Mi Share (formerly Mi Drop) feature is originally designed to share files, but in recent versions of MIUI it has received screen broadcast support. This method is simpler than Miracast, but only works between Xiaomi devices (for example, phone + laptop Xiaomi Book).
How to set up:
- On your phone, open Mi Share (the icon in the notification curtain or in Settings โ Connections and Sharing).
- Select Screen Translation (the option may be called Mirroring).
- On a laptop: ๐ฅ๏ธ For Xiaomi Book: Use the built-in Mi Share utility (installed by default). ๐ป For other laptops: download Mi Share for PC.
Confirm the connection on both devices.
Limitations of the method:
- ๐ซ Does not work on laptops without Xiaomi support (for example, on MacBook or Dell).
- ๐ The quality of the image is lower than Miracast or scrcpy.
- ๐ Requires a connection to a single Wi-Fi network.
How to speed up Mi Share if the broadcast is slowing down?
4. Streaming via Google Cast (Chrome and YouTube)
If you only need to stream a browser or video (like YouTube or Netflix), you can use the built-in Google Cast feature. This method does not require installing additional programs, but only works with supported services.
How to turn on:
- Open Google Chrome or the YouTube app on your phone.
- Launch the video or web page you want to stream.
- Slip on the Cast icon (the icon of the wave screen) in the upper right corner.
- Select your laptop from the list of devices (if not, check if Google Cast is enabled in Windows settings).
The following are the services that support Google Cast:
| Service | Type of content | Delay. |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Video | 1-3 seconds |
| Netflix | Films/series | 2-5 seconds |
| Google Chrome | Web pages | 3-7 seconds |
| Spotify | Music. | Minimum |
If the laptop does not appear in the list of devices for Cast:
- ๐ง On Windows: Install Google Chrome and Google Cast Extension.
- ๐ On macOS: use AirPlay with Chrome (in your browser settings, enable Experimental Web Platform features).
- ๐ง On Linux: Install Chromecast with snap:
5. Alternative programs (ApowerMirror, TeamViewer)
If the built-in methods donโt work (e.g. older models like Redmi 3S), you can use third-party utilities. We tested ApowerMirror and TeamViewer QuickSupport โ both solutions support Xiaomi and offer additional features like screen recording or laptop control.
Comparison of programmes:
| Programme | Xiaomi support | Delay. | No root. |
|---|---|---|---|
| ApowerMirror | Yeah (all models) | 100-300 ms. | Yes. |
| TeamViewer QuickSupport | Yes (with MIUI 9+) | 200-500 ms. | Yes. |
| Vysor | Yes (requires USB) | 50-200 ms. | Yes. |
Instructions for ApowerMirror:
- Download the program to the laptop from the official website.
- On your phone, install the ApowerMirror app from Google Play.
- Connect via USB or Wi-Fi (the second method requires a single network).
- Click Start Now on your phone and confirm the broadcast.
๐ก
If the broadcast through ApowerMirror slows down, in the settings of the program on the laptop, select Quality: High Performance and disable Hardware Acceleration.
โ ๏ธ Note: When using TeamViewer QuickSupport to broadcast the screen, your phone will be available for remote control. To avoid unauthorized access, after the session, be sure to click Stop Sharing in the app.
6. Problem Solving: Why is the broadcast not working?
If none of the methods worked, check the following points:
Common mistakes and ways to eliminate them:
- ๐ Laptop doesn't see phone: Update drivers Wi-Fi/Bluetooth Reboot both devices. On Xiaomi, turn off Adaptive Brightness (in some firmware, it conflicts with Miracast).
- ๐ถ Lags and slowdowns: switch to the network 5 GHz. Close background apps on your phone (especially messengers and cloud services). In scrcpy, reduce bitrate: scrcpy --bit-rate 2M.
- ๐ Error "Device not supported": Check if your model supports Xiaomi Miracast (listed on the official website). โ Updating the system.
On Xiaomi models with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor (such as Xiaomi 13 Ultra), you may need to disable the โGame Turboโ feature in the settings, as it blocks screen translation to optimize performance.
1. On the phone, Miracast settings enable whether to Transmit audio.
2. on the laptop is not the sound turned off for the connected device (in Windows: Control Panel โ Sound).
3. In scrcpy add the --audio flag (Android 10+ required).->
