Have you noticed that the Internet on your Xiaomi is slower than on other devices? Pages load long, video slows down, and file loading takes forever? The problem is not always the provider β often the fault of the settings of the smartphone. In this article, we will discuss all possible ways to increase mobile and Wi-Fi Internet speed on Redmi, POCO, Xiaomi and Black Shark devices, including hidden MIUI features that are not written in the official instructions.
It's important to understand that Internet speed depends on three key factors: hardware capabilities of the smartphone (modem model, support for 4G/5G bands), software constraints (MIUI settings, background processes), and external conditions (signal quality, network load).
Checking the current speed: basic measurements
Before you set up anything, you need to know what speed you're at right now and what's stopping you.
- π± Install Speedtest by Ookla (available on Google Play) or Fast.com (from Netflix).
- π‘ Run a test for Wi-Fi and mobile data separately so you know where the problem is.
- π Compare the results with your providerβs tariff (for example, if you have a tariff of 100 Mbps, and a speed of 10 Mbps is clearly something wrong).
Pay attention to ping (server response time) β if it is above 100 ms, it may indicate network congestion or problems with the smartphone modem. Also check the speed in different places (for example, at home and on the street) β if the difference is significant, the problem may be in the coverage area.
2. Optimizing the mobile Internet (4G/5G)
If you have slow mobile internet, check first what type of network you choose in the settings. Many users don't even realize that their Xiaomi can run in 2G or 3G mode by default!
To enable maximum speed:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose yours. SIM-card (if there are several).
- Go to Network Type and install 4G (preferably)/5G.
- Activate the option to Enable VoLTE (if available) β this improves communication quality and speed.
If you have Xiaomi with 5G support (like the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ or Xiaomi 13T) but the network is not catching, check:
- πΆ Does your operator support you? 5G in your area (check on the providerβs website).
- π Update the firmware - sometimes 5G appears after the update MIUI.
- π οΈ Some models need to be manually included 5G through the Engineering Menu (more on this below).
π‘
If after switching to 4G/5G the Internet disappeared completely, restart the phone - sometimes the modem "hangs" when changing the mode.
3. Hidden modem settings (engineering menu)
Xiaomi has a hidden engineering menu where you can manually adjust the modem settings for maximum speed, which only works on smartphones with Qualcomm processors (Snapdragon) β on MediaTek (Helio, Dimensity), the menu may be missing or have a different interface.
To get into the engineering menu:
- Open the Phone app.
- Enter the combination: ##4636###.
- Select Phone Information (or Phone Information).
- Scroll down to the Set preferred network type block.
Here you will see all available network modes. For maximum speed, select:
- π₯ LTE Only if you only need it. 4G (stablest).
- π NR/LTE/TD-SCDMA/GSM auto - if you have 5G-The phone and operator support this network.
What to do if the engineering menu is not opened?
β οΈ Warning: Do not change other options in the engineering menu unless you are sure of their purpose! Incorrect settings can lead to loss of network or overheating of the modem.
4.Setting up Wi-Fi for maximum speed
If the problem is with Wi-Fi, first check what standard your router and smartphone supports.Modern Xiaomi (starting with the Redmi Note 10 and later) work with Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) and Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) standards. If your router is older than 5 years, it can slow down even a powerful smartphone.
Optimize your connection as follows:
- πΆ Switch to 5 GHz (in the router settings) it's less busy and faster than 2.4 GHz.
- π Install the encryption type in the router WPA2-AES or WPA3 β standard (WEP, TKIP) brake.
- π± In Xiaomi settings, disable the option Automatic connection to open networks (Settings) β Wi-Fi β Additionally).
- π If your speed drops when you move around the house, turn on Roaming Aggressiveness (in the Wi-Fi engineering menu).
Also check if your Xiaomi has a traffic saving mode:
- Go to Settings β Connections and Sharing β Data Use.
- Turn off Traffic Saving and Background Data Transfer (if they are active).
Check the router standard (should be 802.11ac or ax)
Switch to the 5GHz band
Turn off traffic savings in MIUI
Update router firmware
-->
5. Cleaning the system from background processes
MIUI is known for aggressively controlling background processes, but sometimes it harms internet speed, and if you have a lot of running apps, they can absorb traffic in the background (e.g. updates, syncs, ad units).
To free up the channel:
- π§Ή Close all unnecessary apps through Recent (swipe up from the bottom edge of the screen).
- βοΈ Turn off auto-start for unnecessary programs: Settings β Annexes β Application management β Auto-start.
- π₯ Limit background data use: Settings β Connections β Use of data β [Select the application] β Background data.
- π Reboot your phone β it will reset all temporary network connections.
Pay special attention to social networks (Facebook, TikTok, Instagram) and instant messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp) β they often consume traffic even when folded. VPN-applications or ad blockers (such as AdGuard) that may inhibit connection.
π‘
Even lightweight apps like the weather or news can eat up to 500MB of traffic per month in the background, and turn off mobile data if it's not critical.
6. Update firmware and reset network settings
If none of the above has worked, the problem may be outdated firmware or network settings failure, and manufacturers regularly release updates that improve modem performance and fix communication bugs.
To update MIUI:
- Go to Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click Check Updates and install the latest version.
- If the update doesnβt come, check it manually on the Xiaomi Firmware website (select your model).
If the update didnβt work, try resetting your network settings (this will remove all stored Wi-Fi and mobile network settings):
- Open Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Select Network Reset (not to be confused with a full reset!).
- Confirm the action and restart the phone.
β οΈ Warning: After resetting, you will have to re-enter Wi-Fi passwords and configure APN mobile internet (usually settings are automatically available) SMS operator).
| Xiaomi model | Max. speed 4G (Mbps) | Support for 5G support | Features of modem |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 12 Pro+ | 1200 | Yes. | Qualcomm X62 (5G), support for mmWave |
| Xiaomi 13 Ultra | 1000 | Yes. | Qualcomm X70, 4Γ4 MIMO |
| POCO X5 Pro | 800 | Yes. | Snapdragon 778G, Dual 5G |
| Redmi 10C | 300 | No. | MediaTek Helio G35, 4G only |
| Black Shark 5 Pro | 1500 | Yes. | Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a game modem |
Alternative methods: from SIM-map-to-antenna
If the software settings didn't work, the problem might be the hardware.
- π± Replacement SIM-Cards: Older cards (especially Mini-SIM) may not support high speeds. ask the operator for a new Nano-SIM 4G/5G.
- π‘ Signal amplification: If you have a weak signal (1-2 Dividing, buy a cellular repeater (repiter) or a directional antenna for the home.
- π Battery problems: If the battery is worn out (capacity) < 70%), modem can limit speed to save energy.Check battery health in Settings β Battery β Status.
- π οΈ Service center: If the speed drops only on Xiaomi and everything is fine on other devices, the modem may be faulty (especially after falls or moisture hits).
It's also worth checking if you have a back-end limited developer mode.
- Go to Settings. β The phone.
- Click 7 times on the MIUI version to activate the developer mode.
- Back to Settings β Additionally. β For developers.
- Check to disable Inactive Apps and Background Process Limitation options.
