Why you need a Wi-Fi password and why it is difficult to find
Have you ever faced a situation where you need to connect a new gadget to your home Wi-Fi, but the password is long forgotten? Or a friend asks you to share a network and you don't remember the 12-character combination you entered a year ago? On Xiaomi smartphones (including the Redmi, POCO and Black Shark lines), the password from the saved network does not show up in the default settings - this is a security measure. However, there are several legal ways to extract it.
In this article, we will discuss 5 working methods for finding out the password from the WiFi on Xiaomi without root rights and complex manipulations. Some will be suitable for the latest versions of MIUI 14/15 on Android 13/14, others are universal for any firmware. Importantly, all methods work only for networks to which the phone is already connected - if the network is not saved, you will have to reset the router or contact the provider.
Before proceeding to the instructions, check two points:
- π Make sure your phone is connected to the right Wi-Fi network (the antenna icon in the statusbar is active).
- π If the network is public (for example, in a cafe or airport), the password is usually not stored in the system - you will have to request it from the administrator.
Method 1: View passwords through MIUI settings (only for MIUI 12 and later)
Starting with MIUI 12, Xiaomi added a built-in feature to display passwords from saved networks β but with reservations. It does not work on all models and requires confirmation of the data. PIN-It's a code or a fingerprint. Here's how to use it:
- Open the Settings. β Wi-Fi.
- Find the network you want in the list and tap it by its name.
- In the window that opens, select Share your password (or Share in English firmware).
- Confirm the action with a biometric or PIN-code of the screen lock.
It will come after that. QR-The code and the text password below it. On some models (e.g. Redmi Note 10 Pro or POCO X3 Pro) the password text may be hidden, in which case it may be copied from QR-code using any scanner.
β οΈ Note: If there is no Share Password option in your network settings, then your model or version is yours. MIUI It doesn't support this function.

Enable biometric authorization (if disabled)
Have it on hand PIN-unlock-->
Method 2: Use a Wi-Fi configuration file (without root)
Android Stores All Saved Wi-Fi Networks in File wpa_supplicant.conf. It can be accessed without root rights, but you will need a computer and debugging mode. ADB. This method works on all versions. MIUI and Android, including Xiaomi 13 Ultra and Redmi K60.
Instructions:
- Activate Developer Mode: Go to Settings β About Phone. Tap 7 times on MIUI until the notification "You've become a developer" appears.
USB debugging

Connect the phone to the PC and confirm the debugging permission.
ADB Tools
adb pull /data/misc/wifi/WifiConfigStore.xmlor for new versions of Android:
adb pull /data/misc/wifi/WifiConfigStoreSoftAp.xml<string name="PreSharedKey">...
If the file is not found, try an alternative command:
adb shell su -c "cat /data/misc/wifi/*.conf"β οΈ Note: Some firmware may have different paths to the file. If the command returns a Permission denied error, root rights will be required (see Method 4).
What to do if the file is encrypted?
Method 3: Password Viewing Apps (without root)
Google Play has utilities that can extract Wi-Fi passwords without root permissions β but their functionality is limited due to Android's security policy.
- π WiFi Password Viewer β Shows saved networks and passwords (requires Android 9 or lower).
- π± WiFi Key Recovery β works on some Xiaomi models MIUI 11-13.
- π Network Info II β displays technical information about networks, including passwords (newer versions of Android may not work).
How to use:
- Download and install one of the applications.
- Open it and give you access to your Wi-Fi settings.
- In the list of networks, find the desired one and tap it - the password will appear in a separate window.
Limitations:
- β Android 10.+ Most applications do not work without root.
- β Some antiviruses (e.g. Avast) block utilities such as "potentially dangerous".
- β But on the old models (Redmi) 4X, Mi A1) chance of success.
π‘
Check reviews before installing the app β many utilities havenβt been updated since 2019 and may not support newer versions of MIUI.
Method 4: Viewing a root-right password (100% working method)
If your Xiaomi has root access (for example, after unlocking the bootloader and installing Magisk), then the password can be extracted in 30 seconds, this method is guaranteed to work on all versions of MIUI and Android.
Instructions:
- Install the Root Browser or FX File Explorer app from Google Play.
- Open the file manager and go to /data/misc/wifi/ or /data/misc/apexdata/com.android.wifi/ (on Android 10+).
- Find the WifiConfigStore.xml file and open it with a text editor.
- Look for strings with SSID tags (network name) and PreSharedKey (password).
Alternatively, use the terminal:
su
cat /data/misc/wifi/WifiConfigStore.xml | grep PreSharedKeyAdvantages of the method:
- β It works on all versions. MIUI Android.
- β Shows passwords from all saved networks, not just the current one.
- β You can copy the password to the clipboard directly from the file.
β οΈ Warning: Unlocking the bootloader and getting root rights resets the phone to factory settings and may take away warranties. on newer models (Xiaomi) 13T, Redmi Note 12: Process complicated due to anti-Rollback protection.

Root access is the only reliable way to see Wi-Fi passwords on newer versions of Android (11+), where other methods are blocked.
Method 5: Reset the router (if nothing worked)
If none of these things worked, the radical method is to reset the router to factory settings, and that will remove all user settings, including the Wi-Fi password, and you have to reset the network.
How to reset your router:
- Find the Reset button on the back of the router (usually recessed in the case).
- Take a paperclip or toothpick, press and hold the button for 10-15 seconds until the indicators start flashing.
- After restarting, connect to the routerβs default network (the name is usually indicated on the sticker, for example, TP-Link_1234).
- Open the browser and enter in the address bar 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 (The username/password is also on the sticker, usually admin/admin).
- In the control panel, find the Wi-Fi or Wireless partition and set a new password.
Cons of the method:
- β All devices on the network will be disabled and will require reconnection.
- β Port, Parental Control and other router features will reset.
- β If the router is rented from the provider, the reset may block access to the Internet (re-activation will be required).

Comparison of methods: which one to choose?
To make it easier for you to determine, we have collected the key parameters of each method in the table:
| Method | Root is required. | It's working on MIUI 14. | Difficulty | Risks. |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MIUI settings | β No. | β Yes, not on all models) | ββ (simple) | Absent. |
| ADB + Config file | β No. | β Yes. | βββ (PC) | It may not work on Android 12+ |
| Applications without root | β No. | β No, only older versions of Android) | β (easiest) | Low efficiency |
| Root access | β Yes. | β Yes. | ββββ (hard-to-do) | Loss of warranty, risk of "bricking" |
| Router reset | β No. | β Yes. | ββ (need access to the router) | Resetting all network settings |
For most users, the best option is Method 1 (MIUI settings) or Method 2 (ADB). If the phone is old (Android 8-9), try the applications from Method 3. Root and reset the router leave for an emergency.
