Monitoring mobile traffic on Xiaomi Redmi smartphones is a challenge for users with limited tariffs. Even background apps can stealthily eat up gigabytes, leaving you unconnected at the most inopportune moment. In this article, weβll look at all the ways available to limit the Internet on Redmi, from built-in MIUI features to third-party apps.
Feature of firmware MIUI (Version 12, 13, 14 and HyperOS, in that it offers flexible traffic settings, but they are hidden in different menu sections, we show you where to look for these options, how to set up warnings about exceeding the limit and completely block mobile Internet when the packet is exhausted. Also consider the nuances for models with two SIM-maps and give advice on optimizing data consumption.
1. built-in traffic limit in MIUI: Where to look and how to set up
The most reliable way to control Internet consumption is to use the built-in MIUI tools, which work on all Redmi models (from Redmi Note 10 to Redmi 12) and do not require additional software installation, the main thing is to know where these settings are located.
Go to Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Data transfer. Here you'll see two key sections:
- π Traffic statistics β shows the data consumption for the current period (you can manually reset).
- β οΈ Warning and Limitation β Limits and Notifications are set here.
To set a hard limit:
- Slip on the item Warning and restriction.
- Activate the switch Set the data limit.
- Set the value in megabytes or gigabytes (e.g. 10 GB).
- Specify the date of reset of the meter (usually this number coincides with the day of the update of the tariff for the operator).
Turn on the "Set data limit" switch |
Specify the exact amount of traffic (e.g. 15 GB)|
Select the date of automatic reset |
Save settings and restart the phone (optional)-->
Once activated, the system will track your usage and shut down mobile internet completely when the limit is exhausted, ensuring you donβt go into the red, but keep in mind that background app updates (like Google Play or Mi Cloud) can continue to use Wi-Fi traffic.
2. Separate limits for two SIM-map: how to set up
If your Redmi supports two of your SIM-Cards (e.g. Redmi Note 11 Pro)+ 5G or POCO X5 Pro, you can set individual limits for each of them. SIM The second is used for calls, and the second is used for the Internet with a limited tariff.
Instructions:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose. SIM-The card you want to set a limit for (tap on its name).
- Go to Data Transfer β Warning and Restriction.
- Set the limit the same way as in the previous section.
π‘
If you have a tariff with unlimited night gigabytes, set in the settings SIM-Limit background traffic during daytime, which will save the basic package.
Important: If both SIM-Cards are active for data transfer (Double communication option) 4G), To avoid confusion, turn off the mobile Internet to the second. SIM:
- Go to Settings β SIM-cards and mobile networks.
- Select the second SIM and deactivate the Mobile Data Switch.
3. Applications for traffic control: top-3 decision
The built-in MIUI tools are not always convenient, for example, they don't show the consumption of specific applications in real time, and you can use third-party tools for detailed analysis. We tested the three most reliable ones:
| Annex | Features | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| My Data Manager | Tracks traffic for each application, sets limits for the day / week / month. | Advertising in the free version requires access to notifications. |
| GlassWire | Visualizes traffic consumption in the form of graphs, blocks suspicious connections. | Paid functions (for example, IP blocking). |
| NetGuard | Blocks Internet access for individual applications without root rights. | A complex interface for beginners. |
To set a limit through My Data Manager:
- Download the app from Google Play.
- When you first start, allow access to your traffic history.
- Go to the Plans tab and click Add Plan.
- Select the limit type (monthly), specify the volume and date of the reset.

Important: Third-party apps can't completely block the Internet when you exceed the limit, they only notify you. Use the built-in MIUI settings to block it hard.
4. How to limit traffic to individual applications
Some programs (such as TikTok, YouTube, or Telegram) consume traffic even in the background. MIUI has a tool to limit their activity - Background Traffic Limitation.
Instructions:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Select the appropriate app (such as Facebook).
- Slip on Data Transfer.
- Activate the option to limit background traffic.
For more stringent control, use the Data Saving Mode:
- Go to Settings β Battery and Performance β Data Saving Mode.
- Turn on the mode and add applications to exceptions (for example, messengers).
What happens if you limit background traffic to Google Play?
These measures can save up to 30-40% of traffic per month, especially if you use social media or streaming services frequently.
5. Automatic shutdown of mobile Internet on schedule
If you want to have the internet shut down at a certain time (e.g. at night or at work), you can use Do Not Disturb Mode with additional settings, which works on all Redmis with MIUI 12 and later.
How to set up:
- Open Settings β Sounds and vibrations β Do not disturb.
- Select a Schedule and set a time interval (for example, from 23:00 to 7:00).
- Slip on Mode Settings and activate Disable Mobile Data.
An alternative way is to use the MacroDroid app to create automatic rules, such as:
- π Trigger: Time (23:00).
- π΅ Action: disable mobile data.
- β° Condition: Only if connected to a specific Wi-Fi network (optional).
π‘
Disabling mobile Internet on a schedule does not affect Wi-Fi. You will remain in communication in instant messengers if connected to home or work network.
6. Resetting the traffic counter: when and how to do
The built-in traffic meter in MIUI doesn't reset automatically -- you have to manually reset it every month to keep the data up to date, and if you don't, the statistics will accumulate, and you won't be able to track the current expenditure accurately.
How to reset the meter:
- Go to Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Transfer of data.
- Slip through traffic statistics.
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner and select Reset Statistics.
It is best to link the reset to your carrierβs rate update date, for example, if the package is updated on the 1st, set a reminder in Calendar or Google Keep on that number.
π‘
To remember to reset the meter, create a monthly event in Google Calendar with a notification the day before the tariff update.
If you use third-party applications (like My Data Manager), they usually reset statistics automatically according to a given schedule.
7. Frequent problems and their solutions
Sometimes users find that the traffic limit is not working or the meter shows incorrect data, and let's look at typical situations and how to fix them.
β οΈ Note: If the Internet continues to be consumed after setting the limit, check if the modem option is activated (c Settings) β Access Point and modem: It allows other devices to use your traffic.
Problem 1: The limit is reset on its own.
- π Check if the firmware has been updated. MIUI β Sometimes after the update, the settings are reset.
- π Make sure that the date of resetting the meter coincides with the date of updating the tariff.
Problem 2: Traffic statistics show the cost when the internet is off.
- π‘ Some applications may be using Wi-Fi. Open Settings β Wi-Fi β Statistics to check out.
- π Restart your phone β sometimes the meter βhangsΒ».
Problem 3: Notifications of exceeding the limit are not received.
- π Check if notifications for the system are disabled in Settings β Notifications β System notifications.
- π΅ Make sure that in the settings SIM-Cards activated option Exceeding Warning.
