Your Xiaomi is connected to Wi-Fi, but pages load forever, video slows down, and online games are constantly lagging? The problem is not always the provider — in 80% of cases, you can increase the speed yourself by changing just a few settings. This article will help you understand why the Internet on Xiaomi is slow and what to do about it.
We have tested all methods on the Redmi Note 12 Pro+, POCO X5 Pro, Xiaomi 13T and Redmi 10C models with MIUI 14 and HyperOS firmware. Most of the recommendations are universal, but some older devices (such as the Redmi 4X or Mi A2) may require additional steps - these we will mention too.
If your phone is connected to public Wi-Fi (in a cafe, airport, hotel), the speed limit is not the smartphone, but the router itself. In this case, only a VPN or a mobile Internet connection will help.
1. Check the real speed of Wi-Fi
Before you set up anything, make sure that the problem is in the phone, not the router or the provider.
- Connect to the same network another device (laptop, tablet, second phone).
- Run a speed test on it (for example, through Speedtest or FAST.com).
- Compare the results with the performance on your Xiaomi.
If other devices are running at normal speeds and not on smartphones, the problem is with the phone settings, and if it's slow everywhere, it's the router or the provider who's at fault (go to the router section).
Important! You run your speed tests in the same place, the Wi-Fi signal weakens with distance, and if you're standing next to the router on your laptop, and the phone is in another room, the comparison is not correct.
2. Optimize your Wi-Fi settings in MIUI
MIUI firmware (and the new HyperOS) have hidden features that can both speed up and slow down the Internet.
- 🔄 Reconnect to the network: Go to Settings → Wi-Fi, tap on your network, select “Forget the network”, and then connect again by entering a password.
- 📶 Disable automatic connection to weak networks: in Settings → Wi-Fi → Turn off the option “Auto-connection to open networks».
- 🚫 Ban background activity of applications: go to Settings → Annexes → Permits → Autorun and disable autorun for unnecessary programs (especially social networks and instant messengers).
On HyperOS models (such as Xiaomi 14 or Redmi K70), add one more step:
- Open Settings → Connections and Sharing → Wi-Fi.
- Slip on the current network and activate the “Priority Connection”.
- Turn on Smart Switching (if available) to help avoid breaks when a weak signal is present.

Critical setting for older models (Redmi 5/6/7, Mi 8/9): MIUI 10-12 defaults on compatibility mode with legacy routers, which limits speed to 54 Mbps. To turn it off, go to Settings → Wi-Fi → Additional → Wi-Fi Mode and select “802.11n/ac” instead of “Auto”.
3. Set up a router for maximum speed
Even if the phone is a problem, the wrong router settings can nullify all your efforts.
| Parameter | Recommended value | Why is it important? |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi standard | 802.11ac (or 802.11ax if supported) | Older standards (802.11n) limit speeds to 150-300 Mbps |
| Channel width | 40 MHz (for 2.4 GHz) or 80 MHz (for 5 GHz) | Narrow channels (20 MHz) reduce speed by 2-4 times |
| Security regime | WPA2-AES or WPA3 | WPA-TKIP or WEP slows down the network by 30-50% |
| Wi-Fi channel | Auto (or manually select the least loaded) | Neighbors can interfere with one channel |
How to change these settings:
- Open the router control panel (usually at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, login / password - on the sticker at the back).
- Go to the section "Wireless Settings".
- Set the parameters as in the table above.
- Save the settings and restart the router.
For Xiaomi Mi Router routers (including Mi Router 4A/4C/AX6000) there is an additional life hack:

If the speed hasn't increased after the changes, check if the router is overheating. Overheating is a common cause of speed drops. Put it in a ventilated place or point a fan at it (seriously, it helps!).
4. Use 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz (but with reservations)
The 5GHz network is theoretically faster than 2.4GHz, but it has two downsides:
- 📉 Smaller range – walls and obstacles weaken the signal more.
- 🚪 Not all devices support 5GHz (like some smart light bulbs or older laptops).
How to switch correctly:
- Make sure your router broadcasts both networks (usually called, for example, the two networks, «MyWiFi_2G» and «MyWiFi_5G»).
- On the phone, connect to the network with 5G in the name.
- Check the speed - if it has grown, leave 5 GHz. If the signal has become unstable (permanently disappears), return to 2.4 GHz.
The POCO F3/F4 and Redmi K40/K50 have a hidden feature: they support Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), but by default this feature is disabled.
- Go to Settings. → About the phone and tap 7 times on the "Version" MIUI», to enable the developer mode.
- Return to Settings, open Advanced Settings (or Developer).
- Find the option “Wi-Fi mode 6” and turn it on.
💡
If you have a dual-band router but the 5GHz network is not displayed on your phone, try manually specifying the channel in your router settings (e.g. 36, 40, 44 or 48). Some channels may be blocked in your country, but you can still activate them.
5. Update firmware and Wi-Fi drivers
Outdated software is one of the main reasons for slow Wi-Fi, with newer versions of MIUI and HyperOS fixing connectivity errors and adding support for modern standards.
How to update:
- Go to Settings → About the phone → System update.
- If you have an update, download it and install it.
- After the update, be sure to restart the phone.
For devices older than 2020 (like the Redmi Note 8 Pro or Mi 9T), you may need to manually firmware via Fastboot or Recovery.Instructions for a particular model, look for on the 4PDA or Xiaomi.eu forum.
If Wi-Fi gets worse after the upgrade, try to roll back to the previous version.
How to roll back firmware on Xiaomi
Attention! On some models (POCO X3 NFC, Redmi Note 10 Pro) after upgrading to Android 13+, a bug with permanent Wi-Fi breaks appears. The solution is to disable the “Adaptive Communication” function in the developer settings.
6.Reset your network settings (if nothing helped)
If all the previous methods didn't work, it's time for a crackdown -- resetting your network settings -- to remove all the stored Wi-Fi networks, passwords and other data. VPN-Configuration, but often solves problems with slow Internet.
How to reset:
- Open Settings → System and device → Resetting settings.
- Select “Reset Network Settings”.
- Confirm the action and wait for the reboot.
After discharge:
- 🔌 Connect to Wi-Fi again.
- 📱 Reinstall security certificates (if you use a corporate network).
- 🔄 Check the speed – it should grow.
Attention! On devices with an unlocked bootloader (for example, after installing custom firmware), a network reset may result in a loss of IMEI. Before the procedure, check the IMEI using the code *#06# and save it.
💡
Network reset is a last resort, and before you do that, try all the other ways, because after the reset, you have to reset the connections.
7. Check the phone for viruses and background activity
It's unlikely, but it's possible: your phone is infected with a virus that steals traffic or congestion, especially if you've been installing apps from unknown sources.
How to check:
- Install an antivirus (such as Dr.Web or Malwarebytes).
- Scan the system for threats.
- Check the list of running apps in Settings → Apps → Launched. If there are suspicious programs (for example, with Chinese characters in the title), delete them.
It is also worth limiting the background activity of system applications:
- 📊 Go to Settings. → Battery and performance → Background activity management.
- 🔍 Select “Limit background activity” for unnecessary programs (especially Mi Video, Mi Browser, GetApps, etc).
- 🚫 Turn off auto-update apps on Google Play → Settings → Auto-update of applications.
On HyperOS models, add one more step: open Settings → Privacy → Special Permissions → Access location data and turn it off for applications that don’t need it (like a calculator or flashlight).
8. Alternative methods (if standard methods do not help)
If Wi-Fi is still slowing down after all the manipulations, try these non-obvious methods:
- 🔧 Change. DNS: In the Wi-Fi settings (additionally) specify DNS 8.8.8.8 (Google or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare. This can speed up the loading of sites on 10-30%.
- 📡 Use a signal repeater: if the router is far away, buy a low-cost repeater (e.g. Xiaomi Mi Wi-Fi Repeater 2).
- 🔌 Connect by cable: if your Xiaomi has support USB OTG, can buy an adapter USB-C → Ethernet and connect to the router cable (speed will be like a PC).
- 📱 Turn on Airplane Mode for 30 Seconds: Sometimes it Resets Network Errors.
For advanced users, if you have root rights, you can manually change your Wi-Fi configuration files. /system/etc/wifi/WCNSS_qcom_cfg.ini, magnifying gEnable2x2 before 1 (it activates MIMO 2x2 But without root, you don't want to experiment!
Attention! On some firmware (especially custom ones), changing system files can lead to a bootloop.
