Why iPhone and Xiaomi TV are not always friends out of the box
Synchronizing an iPhone with a Xiaomi TV is a task that seems trivial at first, but in practice often turns into a jumping clock with settings. The reason lies in ecosystem differences: Apple uses the proprietary AirPlay protocol, and Xiaomi uses its own software. TV-consoles and smart TVs prefer Miracast standards and DLNA. As a result of direct plag-and-play connection does not occur, and the user has to choose workarounds.
The additional complexity is created by the versioning of the firmware: Xiaomi TVs based on Android TV (for example, the Mi TV A2 series or Mi TV Q2) support more protocols than models on PatchWall (like the Mi TV 4S or Mi TV 5 Pro). And there are nuances with screen resolutions: the iPhone can stream video in 4K HDR, but the TV does not always correctly process such a signal without manual setting. In this article, we will analyze all working methods of connection, from wireless to wired, taking into account specific models and typical errors.
Way 1: AirPlay on Xiaomi TV โ does it work and how to set up
AirPlay is the most convenient way to stream from your iPhone to your TV, but Xiaomi doesnโt include out-of-the-box support, but there are two legal workarounds:
- ๐บ Built-in AirPlay feature on new models: Xiaomi Mi series TVs TV Q2 2023+ mi TV A Pro received official support for AirPlay 2 after updating the firmware to MIUI TV 3.0+. You can check the version in Settings โ On TV.
- ๐ Third-party applications: For older models (e.g. Mi) TV 4X or Mi TV 5) you will need to install the AirScreen or ApowerMirror app from Google Play (available on Android only) TV, Not PatchWall!).
If your TV supports AirPlay natively, turn on the function as follows:
- Open Settings โ Connections and Sharing โ AirPlay.
- Activate the switch and select Access Mode (All or Only Contacts).
- On your iPhone, swipe up for Control Point, tap Screen Duplicate and select your Xiaomi TV.
โ ๏ธ Note: On PatchWall TVs (e.g. Mi) TV 4A) AirPlay does not work even through third-party applications โ alternative methods will be required (see Methods 2-5).
Method 2: Wireless streaming via Miracast (Screen Mirroring)
Miracast is a universal wireless broadcast standard that all Xiaomi TVs (except the oldest models until 2018) support, but the iPhone does not have Miracast built-in support, so you will need to:
- Install Screen Mirroring on your iPhone (such as ApowerMirror or LetsView).
- Connect both devices to the same 5 GHz Wi-Fi network (2.4 GHz lags are possible!).
- On your TV, turn on Miracast: For Android TV: Settings โ Display and Sound โ Wireless Display. For PatchWall: Settings โ Connection and Sharing โ Wireless Display.

Advantages of the method:
- ๐ฎ Minimum latency (around 50โ100 ms) โ suitable for gaming.
- ๐ถ It works without the Internet (local network is sufficient).
Disadvantages:
- ๐ Quickly sits down the battery of the iPhone (broadcast consumes up to 30% of the charge per hour).
- ๐ Video quality is limited 1080p (Even if the TV is still on 4K).

Method 3: Wired connection via HDMI (most stable method)
If wireless methods fail, HDMI-The adapter is the most reliable solution. You'll need to do it:
- ๐ Lightning adapter โ HDMI (Official from Apple or certified, for example, Belkin).
- ๐บ HDMI-cable 2.0 or higher for support 4K@60Hz).
Step-by-step:
- Connect the adapter to your iPhone and the cable to your HDMI port on your TV (use an ARC or HDMI 2.0 port for better quality).
- On the TV, select the appropriate signal source (HDMI 1/2/3).
- The iPhone will be notified โTrust this device?โ
- If the image does not appear, go to Settings โ Screen and brightness โ Screen resolution and select 1920ร1080 or 3840ร2160 (depending on TV support).
Critical nuance: adapters on the MHL chip (cheap Chinese counterparts) do not work with the iPhone - you need Lightning โ HDMI with support for Digital AV.
| Adapter model | 4K support | Delay (MS) | Price (โ) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple Lightning Digital AV | โ Yes. | ~30 | 4 500 โฝ |
| Belkin AV10175bt | โ Yes. | ~40 | 3 200 โฝ |
| Baseus HDMI Adapter | โ No, max. 1080p) | ~50 | 1 500 โฝ |
| No-name (AliExpress) | โ No (risk of artifacts) | ~100 | 800 โฝ |
โ ๏ธ Note: When connecting through HDMI iPhones can warm up โ thatโs fine, but if the temperature is above 45ยฐC, turn off the adapter and let the device cool down.

If the TV doesnโt recognize the signal, try restarting both devices and using another one. HDMI-Sometimes it helps to turn off the function. HDCP customized TV (if available).
Method 4: Broadcasting via DLNA (for video and music)
The DLNA protocol allows you to stream media files (video, photos, music) from the iPhone to Xiaomi TV without duplication of the screen.
- Install the VLC or Infuse app on your iPhone.
- Turn it on on the TV. DLNA-server: For Android TV: Settings โ Network โ DLNA. For PatchWall: Settings โ Connections โ Local area network (DLNA).

Limitations of the method:
- ๐ฌ Does not support streaming from Netflix, YouTube or Apple TV+ (Local files only).
- ๐ Sound can be transmitted with a delay (up to 500 ms) โ not suitable for films with subtitles.

Method 5: Using Apple TV or Android TV
If the built-in methods are not satisfied, the external console will solve the problem:
- ๐ Apple TV 4K: Pros: full support for AirPlay 2, Dolby Vision, integration with iCloud.Cons: expensive (from 12 000) โฝ), requires a separate remote.
- ๐ค Android console TV (Nvidia Shield, Xiaomi Mi Box S: Pros: cheaper (from 5 000) โฝ), Supports Google Cast and Miracast. Cons: no native AirPlay support (you need to install AirScreen).
To connect via Apple TV:
- Connect the set-top box to the TV via HDMI.
- On iPhone, swipe up for Control Point โ Screen Duplication โ select Apple TV.
- To stream content, use AirPlay (image) ๐ค in YouTube, Photos and other applications.).

Apple TV is the only way to get full screen duplication with support for HDR and Dolby Atmos on Xiaomi TV without lags.
Common mistakes and their solutions
Even with the right setup, there can be problems.-5 errors and ways of eliminating them:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| TV not visible in the list of devices to connect | Different Wi-Fi networks or Miracast/DLNA disabled | Connect both devices to the same network, check the settings of the TV |
| Video lagging or slowing down | Weak Wi-Fi signal or network congestion | Switch to 5 GHz, disconnect other devices from the router |
| No sound in front of you. HDMI-connection | Incorrect settings of audio output on iPhone | Go to Settings โ Music โ Exit and select HDMI |
| "Not supported format" when playing video | The TV does not support HEVC or Dolby Vision codecs. | Convert your video to H.264 or use Apple TV |
| The iPhone screen is not completely duplicated (black fields) | Disparity in screen resolutions | Scale to Settings TV โ Screen โ Image Mode |
