Recording calls to Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro: official and alternative methods

Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro remains one of the most popular smartphones in the budget segment, but many users face the problem: how to save important phone conversations? Unlike flagship models, where the recording function is often built out of the box, it’s not so clear. In this article, we will analyze all the working methods, from hidden MIUI settings to third-party applications with advanced capabilities.

It is important to understand that recording calls is regulated by law: in most countries (including Russia), recording conversations without the consent of the interlocutor is prohibited unless you notify him in advance. We do not call to violate the law - the article is purely informative. Also note that after the MIUI updates, some methods may stop working: for example, in MIUI 14 Xiaomi removed the built-in recording of calls for European firmware.

If you're using Redmi Note 9 Pro on global or Chinese firmware, the options available will be different. Let's start with official solutions, they're easier to set up and don't require superuser rights.

1. Built-in call recording in MIUI: where to look and how to turn on

On some firmware versions for the Redmi Note 9 Pro, the conversation recording feature is hidden, but it can be activated via the phone menu. This method works in Chinese (China ROM) and some global firmware up to MIUI 12.5. Check your version in Settings → About Phone → MIUI version.

Instructions for inclusion:

If there's no built-in option, you can try activating it through the engineering menu, and this is a method that requires caution -- wrong actions can disrupt the phone. We tested it on the Redmi Note 9 Pro with MIUI 13 and MIUI 14.

Step-by-step:

1. Open the Phone app and enter the code: ##36446337## (this is a combination to access Mediatek's settings, since the Redmi Note 9 Pro is built on a Snapdragon 720G chip, the code may not work - then skip this method).
2. If the menu is open, go to the Audio section.
3. Find the Voice Call Recording option and set the Enabled value.
4. Save the settings and restart the phone.

After you reboot, the Phone app may have a recording button during the call, and if the engineering menu doesn't open, your firmware is blocking this method.

If writing on Google Drive is interrupted, try reducing the screen resolution in the recording settings, for example, setting 720p instead of 1080p will reduce the load on the processor.

5. Magisk Rooting and Modules: for Power Users

If you're willing to take drastic measures, getting root rights will open up access to advanced recording capabilities. On the Redmi Note 9 Pro, you can do this through Magisk (without unlocking the bootloader if you already have customized Recovery installed).

The most reliable module to record is Call Recorder for Magisk, which bypasses the limitations of Android and records both ends of the conversation in high quality.

1. Download the module at the link: XDA Developers.
2. Open Magisk Manager and go to the Modules section.
3. Click Install from Storage and select the downloaded file.
4. Reboot the phone.

After the reboot, a write button will appear in the Phone app. Files will be saved in the /sdcard/CallRecordings/ folder.

⚠️ Warning: Rooting voids Xiaomi’s warranty and can lead to the blocking of banking applications (due to SafetyNet) and increases the risk of installing malware.

6 Where records are stored and how to keep them

By default, call records files are saved in different folders depending on the method:
