Are you tired of missing important calls when you canβt answer? Xiaomiβs answering machine (including Redmi, POCO, and Mi models) solves this problem β it automatically takes calls and records messages when youβre busy. But unlike the iPhone, where the feature is built in out of the box, Android devices often have to manually configure it.
In this article, you will find three working methods for creating an answering machine: through standard tools. MIUI, We'll also use Google Voice, which is for users with American numbers, and we'll use specialized programs like AutoResponder or HulloMail to help us set up a personal greeting, save notes, and avoid common mistakes β FAQ Answering frequent questions about compatibility and security.
β οΈ Important: The functionality of the answering machine depends on the operator, Tele2 You can block voice mail service, check your provider's support before setting up.
1. Method: Standard answering machine in MIUI (without applications)
Xiaomi smartphones based on MIUI 12 and later have built-in voicemail, but it is hidden in the phone settings.
- Open the phone application (pipe icon).
- Click on the three dots in the upper right corner β Settings β Voicemail.
- Choose your carrier from the list (e.g. MTS, Beeline, MegaFon). If your provider is not available, try the Other option.
- Enter the voicemail access number (check it with the operator or on the official website). For MegaFon it is usually *105#, for MTS - +74957770611.
Once set up, all missed calls will be redirected to the answering machine, and messages will be saved in the Voicemail section of the Phone app. On Xiaomi models with pure Android (such as the POCO F5 or Xiaomi 13T Pro), this path may differ - look for the Additional Settings β Operator Services section.

2. Method: Autoresponder via Google Voice (for users with US-number)

Instructions:
- π± Install the Google Voice app from Google Play.
- π Sign in to the Google account to which the Google Voice number is linked.
- βοΈ Go to Settings (cog at the top) β Voice mail.

Method 3: Third-Party Applications for Autoresponder
If the built-in MIUI tools don't work (for example, the operator doesn't support voicemail), use specialized applications. We tested the three most reliable ones:
| Annex | Features | Cons | Reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| AutoResponder | Automatic. SMS-Answers to missed calls, customization of texts | There is no recording of voice messages, only SMS. | Google Play |
| HulloMail | Voice mail with cloud storage, transcription of messages into text | Registration, paid rates for advanced features | Google Play |
| YouMail | Spam protection, personal greetings for different contacts | Not all functions work in Russia | Google Play |
To set up HulloMail (we recommend as the most versatile option):
- Download and install the app.
- Register by phone number (required) SMS-confirmation).
- In the Settings β Voicemail section, write down a personal greeting.
- Activate the option to Redirect all calls.
π‘ Tip: You can set up different greetings for contacts from the phone book and unknown numbers on HulloMail, for example, for friends, "Hi, I'll call you back in 10 minutes," and for spammers, "This number doesn't accept callsΒ».

4. Set up a personal greeting
The standard "Subscriber Unavailable" greeting sounds faceless. Make it more informative:
- ποΈ Length: Optimum 10-15 seconds. Longer callers can hang up.
- π’ Content: Indicate when you will call back (βI will answer before 18:00β) or offer an alternative way of communicating (βWrite to WhatsAppΒ»).
- πΆ Background: Avoid music, it makes you less legible. You'd better record it in a quiet room.
- π Update: Change the greeting every 1-2 months (for example, add up-to-date information about your work schedule).
An example of a successful welcome:
"Hello! You've reached the number [your name]. I'm in a meeting right now and I'll answer it by 17:00. If it's urgent, write to Telegram -- I check my messages every hour. Thank you!"
To record the greetings on HulloMail:
- Open the app β Voicemail β My greeting.
- Click Record and say the text.
- Listen to the recording and save it if everything is fine.
π‘
Use Vocaroo to record the greeting on a computer with a good microphone, and then upload the audio file to the answering machine app.
5. How to save and manage records
Voice messages take up space in the memory of the phone or the cloud, so you don't lose important records.
- π Export: HulloMail and YouMail can save messages in the format MP3 Google Drive or send it by email.
- ποΈ Clean up: Delete old messages once a week - they accumulate unnoticed.
- π Search: In transcripted apps (like HulloMail) look for entries by keyword.
If you use the operatorβs standard voicemail:
- Open the phone application β Voicemail.
- Click on the message and select Save (if available).
- The file will be saved to the Voicemail folder in internal memory (use a file manager such as Mi File Manager).
β οΈ Note: Some operators (e.g, Tele2) Keep records for only 7 days. Download important messages right away!
6. Solving problems with the answering machine
If the answering machine is not working, check:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Calls are not forwarded. | Redirection from the operator is disabled | Call *#67# and check the settings. |
| No notifications of new reports | Disabled push notifications in the application | Go to Settings β Notifications and turn them on |
| Saved records are not reproduced | The audio file is damaged. | Try playing through another player (e.g. VLC) |
| The answering machine is delayed | Weak signal from the network | Check the signal level or restart the phone |
If the problem is not resolved:
- Reboot your smartphone.
- Update the answering machine app to the latest version.
- Reset network settings: Settings β SIM cards and mobile networks β Reset network settings.
π‘
Before resetting your network settings, save your carrier's APNs - they may reset. Find them on the provider's official website (Internet settings section).
7. Alternatives to answering machine: SMS-answering-boxes
If voicemail is not suitable, consider alternatives:
- π© SMS-Autoresponder: Apps like AutoResponder send automatic messages SMS Example of text: "I'm in a meeting right now. Please write to WhatsAppΒ».
- π€ Chatbot in messengers: Set up an auto-answer in WhatsApp Business or Telegram with a notification of a missed call.
- π Conditional Redirect: Redirect calls to another number (such as a colleague) by a team *61*79XXXXXXXXX#.
To configure SMS-autoresponder:
- Install the application and provide access to SMS.
- In the Rules section, create a new rule: If a missed call β Send SMS.
- Write the text of the message and save it.
π‘ Tip: WhatsApp Business can set up automatic response to keyword messages, for example, if a subscriber writes βcall back,β the bot will say, βIβll call back within an hourΒ».
