Did you notice that the Internet on Xiaomi Redmi was disappearing too quickly? Or did the operator send a notification that you had exceeded the limit, even though you had hardly used a mobile network? 90% of the time, the problem is the background traffic consumption of applications or the incorrect settings of MIUI. But how exactly do you know where the megabytes are leaking?
In this article, we’ll look at all the ways to check traffic on Redmi smartphones, from standard system tools to hidden features and third-party apps, learn how to track the flow of each application, set up warnings about exceeding the limit, and even identify “voracious” services that work in the background, and at the end, an exclusive life hack, how to reset traffic meters without losing data.
1. Standard traffic monitoring in MIUI settings
The easiest way is to use the built-in MIUI tools, which are available on all Redmi models (from Redmi Note 7 to Redmi 13) and do not require additional software installation.
Go to Settings. → SIM-maps and mobile networks → Traffic usage: Here you will see a flow chart for the current period (usually a month), and a list of apps sorted by gluttony:
- 📊 Total traffic – total mobile internet usage since last reset.
- ⚠️ Background traffic – data that applications consume in hidden mode (often social networks and instant messengers are to blame).
- 🔄 Data reset – button to zero statistics (useful at the beginning of a new calculation period).
One important thing: by default, MIUI shows traffic only for the mobile network. If you want to see the flow through Wi-Fi, switch the tab at the top of the screen. You can also set a traffic limit here, and if you exceed it, the phone will automatically turn off mobile Internet.
💡
If you see unknown names on the app list (e.g. com.android.vending), these are Google system services, which are usually minimal, but if it exceeds 100MB per month, check your phone for viruses.
2. Hidden traffic settings: how to see detailed statistics
Few people know, but MIUI has an advanced traffic display mode that is hidden by default, which shows not only total consumption, but also hourly activity, and also divides traffic into the foreground (when you actively use the application) and background (hidden processes).
To enable this regime:
- Open the Settings. → The phone.
- Click 5 times in a row on the MIUI version to activate the developer mode.
- Go back to the main settings and select Additional → For developers.
- Find the option to Show traffic usage in real time and turn it on.
Now, a new Details tab will appear in the Traffic Usage section, and you can:
- 📅 Select an arbitrary period for analysis (not just the current month).
- 📈 See peak traffic flow hours (useful for background updates).
- 🔍 Filter applications by type of traffic (mobile)/Wi-Fi).
What if the “Developers” section does not appear?
3. Applications for monitoring traffic: top-3 decision
The built-in MIUI tools aren’t always accurate — they may not take into account traffic from some system processes or reset after a reboot. If you want the most detail, install one of these apps:
| Annex | Features | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Internet Speed Meter | Shows the speed in real time in the notification panel, keeps the flow history by day. | It does not separate traffic by application. |
| My Data Manager | It can block background traffic for selected applications, supports widgets. | The commercial is free. |
| GlassWire | Visualizes traffic as a graph, shows suspicious connections. | A complex interface for beginners. |
We recommend My Data Manager for most Redmi users, which is compatible with MIUI 12/13/14 and does not conflict with system services.
- Launch the application and provide access to the VPN (needed for monitoring).
- In the settings, specify the date of the beginning of the settlement period (coincides with the operator's tariff).
- Enable the option to Show notification when you exceed the limit.
4. Check traffic through the operator’s website or application
If you need to know the exact rate (not the phone), check the operator's statistics, which is especially useful if you suspect that the phone is not counting traffic correctly.
- 📱 MTS: Open the application "My MTS» → «My fare» → «Details».
- 🌐 Beeline: Go to the site beeline.ru → «Personal office» → «Services» → «Internet».
- 📡 Television2: Dial it. USSD-team *155*1# Or use the app "My Body"2».
- 🔴 MegaFon: Enter in the browser lk.megafon.ru → «My fare» → «Detailed expenditures».
Note that the operator’s data may differ from the phone’s statistics by 5-15%, which is normal – the operator takes into account traffic at the network level, and the phone at the device level (for example, does not see repeated requests or caching).
💡
If the difference between the operator and the phone exceeds 20%, this is an occasion to check the phone for viruses or reset the network settings (Settings). → SIM-map → Resetting mobile network settings).
5. How to Identify and Block “Voracious” Apps
Even if you don't use some software, it can covertly spend traffic on updates, ads, or background syncs. Here's how to find and disable them:
First, check the list of the most active apps in Settings → Traffic Usage.
- 🤖 Social networks (Facebook, TikTok, Instagram) – often update the feed in the background.
- 📦 Cloud services (Google Drive, Mi Cloud) – sync files without your knowledge.
- 🎮 Games (PUBG, Genshin Impact – Download updates in the background.
To limit their appetites:
- Open Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Choose a “gluttonous” application → Mobile data.
- Turn off the Background Data Transfer and Auto Update options.
- For radical savings, set a limit in Traffic Use → Background Limitation.
Disable Auto-Update Apps in Google Play|Ban background traffic for social networks|Set the limit of mobile Internet|Check the operator’s statistics once a week|Use data compression in Chrome-->
Pay special attention to system applications like Mi Video, Mi Browser or GetApps, which are often updated in the background. If you do not use them, you should turn them off or uninstall them (via Settings → Applications → Delete).
💡
Redmi with MIUI 14 has a hidden Easy Mode feature that automatically blocks background traffic for unnecessary applications. Enables in Settings → Special Features → Easy Mode.
6. Resetting traffic meters without loss of data
Many Xiaomi Redmi users face a problem: the traffic meters are reset arbitrarily after a system update or reboot. To avoid this, use a manual reset at the beginning of each billing period (usually the 1st).
But what if you forgot to reset the meter, and the operator has already written off money for exceeding the limit?
- Write down current traffic metrics (take a screen picture or copy the data).
- Go to Settings → System → Date and time.
- Turn off date and time Autodetermination and manually set the date to the 1st of the next month.
- Return to Traffic Use and click Reset Statistics.
- Return the correct date and time.
This method works on all Redmi models (tested on Redmi Note 11, Redmi 12 and POCO X5), the main thing is not to change the date more than 30 days ahead, otherwise the settings of some applications (for example, banking) may be confused.
💡
If after resetting the counter again shows old data, clear the cache of the Settings application (Settings → Apps → All Apps → Settings → Clear the cache).
7. Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
Even Xiaomi experienced users sometimes make mistakes when monitoring traffic.
⚠️ Note: If you use two of these SIM-maps, traffic settings apply separately for each. Check the statistics for both networks in Settings → SIM-map → Use of traffic (select the right one) SIM top-down).
Mistake 1: Ignoring Wi-Fi traffic. Many people think that mobile Internet is only consumed when Wi-Fi is turned off, but in fact some applications (such as WhatsApp or Telegram) can switch to the mobile network if the Wi-Fi signal is weak. To avoid this, turn off the option of Automatic Switching to Mobile Data in the Wi-Fi settings.
Mistake 2: Unaccounted roaming. If you are traveling, your phone can connect to foreign networks with roaming charges (even if you have unlimited rates). → SIM-map → Roaming data and disable automatic connection.
Error 3: Background sync of Google Account. By default, MIUI allows Google to sync contacts, email and calendar in the background. To turn this off, go to Settings → Accounts → Google → Account Sync and uncheck the unneeded options.
