Monitoring mobile internet consumption on the Xiaomi Redmi 8 Pro is a key challenge for users with limited plans. Even if you have an unlimited package, hidden app updates or background activity can eat up gigabytes unnoticed, and in this article we will examine all the ways to check traffic, from built-in MIUI tools to third-party utilities and mobile operator services.
The Redmi 8 Pro (codename begonia) features two models. SIM-So, the data can be used from different numbers, and we'll show you how to track consumption on each SIM separately, set up warnings about exceeding the limit, and identify voracious applications. Youβll also learn why phone and operator data may be different β and what to do about it.
1. Check traffic through MIUI settings
The fastest way is to use the built-in traffic monitor in the MIUI firmware. It works on all versions (including MIUI 12/13/14) and does not require additional programs to be installed. The tool shows mobile network and Wi-Fi consumption, but for accuracy it is better to reset the statistics at the beginning of the billing period (for example, the 1st day of the month).
To open the statistics section:
- π± Open Settings (cog icon on the main screen).
- π Go to Connections and Sharing β Use of data.
- π At the top of the screen, select the Mobile Data tab.
- π Click on the calendar icon (Period) to adjust the report dates.
Here you'll see:
- π Schedule of expenditure for the selected period (by day).
- π± Expenditure SIM-cards (if you use two SIM cards).
- π¦ Top apps consuming traffic (sorted by descending).
- β οΈ Excess Warning (manually configured).
π‘
If the chart shows unrealistically high values (e.g. 10 GB per night), check the background activity of applications in Settings β Apps β Permissions β Autorun. Often the fault of messengers or cloud services.
Note: MIUI resets statistics when you reboot your phone. To avoid this, export data manually (Export button in the upper right corner) or use third-party apps.
2. Set up warnings about exceeding the limit
To avoid missing the point where traffic gets to the dangerous mark, set up notifications. In MIUI, this is done in the same section Data Use:
- Open Settings β Connections and Sharing β Data Use β Mobile Data.
- Slap the icon. βοΈ (Settings) in upper right corner.
- Turn on the switch Excess Warning.
- Specify the limit (for example, 15 GB) and save.
Now, when you reach 80 percent, 90 percent, and 100 percent of that, the phone will show a notification. SIM-Configure the limits for each individually β the system does not add them up automatically.
3. Traffic check through the operatorβs application
Data in your phone and mobile operator can diverge by 5-15% due to different counting methods. To get accurate information, use your provider's official app:
| Operator. | Annex | Section for verification | Accuracy of data |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTS | My MTS. | Tariffs β Details β Internet | Β±1% |
| Beeline | My Beeline. | Services β Internet β Statistics | Β±3% |
| MegaFon | MegaFon | Tariffs β Remains β Internet traffic | Β±2% |
| Tele2. | My Tele2. | Balance β Details β Internet | Β±5% |
If you have a virtual operator (e.g. Yota, Tinkoff Mobile), check the flow through their apps or personal account on the site. Some providers (e.g. SberMobile) do not provide real-time detailing - the data is updated with a delay of up to 24 hours.
β οΈ Note: If the operator's application shows a 0 MB flow rate, but the Internet is working, check if the phone is connected to Wi-Fi. Some programs (for example, My MTS) automatically hide mobile traffic statistics when you are actively connected to the network.
4. Third-party applications for traffic monitoring
The built-in MIUI tools arenβt always accurate, especially if you reboot your phone often or use a VPN. In this case, third-party software will help.
- π Internet Speed Meter Lite - shows speed and flow in real time in the notification panel. Supports widgets.
- π‘οΈ GlassWire β visualizes traffic on applications, blocks suspicious activity.
- π My Data Manager β Knows how to share statistics SIM-maps and Wi-Fi, export reports.
- π NetGuard not only monitors, but also blocks Internet access for selected applications without rooting.
Check the permissions of the application before installing, for example, GlassWire requires access to the Call Log for proper operation β this is normal, but other programs may request unnecessary rights.
Install from Google Play|Open the application settings|Choose. SIM-map|Activate notification in status panel|Set a monthly limit-->
One advantage of third-party utilities is that they continue to count traffic even after the phone is rebooted (as opposed to the built-in MIUI counter). However, note that some applications (such as NetGuard) may conflict with Xiaomi's energy-saving modes.
5. How to know which app is eating up traffic
If the mobile Internet ends too fast, it's one or more apps to blame.
- Open Settings β Connections and Sharing β Data Use β Mobile Data.
- Scroll down to the Usage by Applications block.
- Sort the list by descending (stamp by the column of Everything).
- Check apps in the top - often this is: π΅ Music services (YouTube Music, Spotify). πΊ Video players (TikTok, Kwai). π¬ Messengers (Telegram, WhatsApp β especially when transferring media files). βοΈ Cloud storage (Google Drive, Yandex.Disk during autosynchronization).
If there is an unknown high-spending app on the list (e.g. com.android.providers), it could be:
- π System process (update) MIUI or Google services).
- π‘οΈ Malware (check your phone with an antivirus, such as Dr.Web Light).
- π‘ VPN Proxies (if you use Psiphon, Turbo) VPN etc.).
How to distinguish a system process from a virus?
Resetting statistics and calibration of the counter
If the data in the phone and the operator are very different (for example, 1-2 GB), the MIUI counter could get lost.
- Go to Settings β Connections and Sharing β Data Use β Mobile Data.
- Slap the icon. βοΈ (Settings) in upper right corner.
- Choose Reset Statistics.
- Confirm the action.
After reset, start the countdown again.
- π Reset the statistics on the 1st day (or on the day of tariff activation).
- π Turn off automatic app updates on Google Play β Settings β Auto-update of applications.
- π΄ Transfer background data to saving mode: Settings β Battery and productivity β Saving traffic.
β οΈ Warning: After resetting the statistics, the phone can go 0MB for 10-15 minutes until the information is updated.
π‘
If the meter is again showing incorrect data after the reset, check if the phone is roaming (even in the home region), some operators automatically connect roaming when the signal is weak, which distorts the statistics.
7. Frequent mistakes and how to avoid them
Redmi 8 Pro users often face typical traffic monitoring problems:
| Problem. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The meter shows 0 MB, although the Internet works | Phone connected to Wi-Fi | Turn off Wi-Fi or check the statistics in the Wi-Fi Use section |
| The cost of the phone and the operator differs by 30%+ | No statistics are reset after MIUI update | Reset the meter and start counting again. |
| The app shows the expense, but it is not in the list Use of data | The application uses VPN or system permissions | Check in Settings β Applications β Permissions β VPN |
| After the reset, the statistics were zeroed out. | Features of MIUI work | Use third-party applications (such as My Data Manager) |
Another common mistake is ignoring background traffic, like Google Play Services can spend up to 300MB a month syncing, even if you don't run apps, to limit that:
- Open Settings β Applications β Application Management.
- Find Google Play Services.
- Select Mobile Data and disable Background Data.
