Why VoLTE is important for Xiaomi owners and how to set it up correctly
VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology allows you to call over a 4G network, rather than switching to outdated 2G/3G, as older smartphones did. For owners of Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO, this means clearer sound, faster connection (call connects in 1-2 seconds instead of 5-7), and the ability to use mobile Internet during a conversation, but many users find that the option is either missing in the settings or does not work after activation.
The problem often lies in three things: unsupported. SIM-map, outdated firmware MIUI In this article, we will discuss how to check your Xiaomi compatibility with VoLTE, enable the technology on models from Redmi Note 10 to Xiaomi 14, and what to do if the option is gray or disappears after a reboot. We will pay special attention to the nuances for Russian operators β MTS, Beeline, MegaFon and Tele2, where VoLTE support is implemented in different ways.
If you have never set up VoLTE before, donβt worry: the process takes no more than 5 minutes, and all the steps are illustrated with screenshots. SIM-Maps and software updates, otherwise even the right settings will not work.
Step 1: Check VoLTE support with your Xiaomi smartphone
Not all Xiaomi models support VoLTE, especially when it comes to budget devices from 2018-2020 or Chinese versions without global firmware.
- π± Models with guaranteed support for VoLTE: Xiaomi 11/12/13/14, Redmi Note 10/11/12 (5G), POCO F3/F4/F5, Mi 10/11. These devices are certified for VoLTE use by most operators.
- β οΈ Limited Support Models: Redmi 9/9A/9C, POCO X3 NFC, Mi A3. Here, VoLTE can only work after manually configuring or updating the firmware.
- β Models without VoLTE: Redmi 7/8, Mi 8 Lite, POCO F1 (They don't have the technology available at the software level.
To find out if your Xiaomi VoLTE supports:
- Open the Settings app β About the phone β All the characteristics.
- Scroll down to the Network block and find VoLTE or 4G Calling strings. If they don't, there's no support.
- Alternatively, enter ##4636## in the dialer, go to the Phone Information tab and check for the VoLTE provisioned (should be Yes).
β οΈ Note: If you are using the Chinese version of Xiaomi (with firmware for the market) CN), VoLTE can be blocked even with hardware support, in which case you will need to unlock the bootloader and install global firmware.
Step 2: Preparation SIM-maps for VoLTE
Even if your smartphone supports VoLTE, SIM-The card must be compatible. Russian operators provide VoLTE only on the basis of the USIM-cards (they are easily distinguished by gold contacts β there are 8, not 6, as in the old ones). SIM). Here's what we need to do:
- π Update. SIM-card: If your card is older than 2018, contact the communication salon for a free replacement for the card. USIM. MTS and Beeline take 5 minutes.
- π Check the tariff: VoLTE is not available at all tariffs. For example, MegaFon technology works only at tariffs from 500.β½/Tele2 is for everyone except My Talk".
- π Registration area: If you have purchased SIM-A card in another region (for example, in Moscow, but you live in Krasnodar), VoLTE may not work. The solution is to call in support and ask to "link" the card to the current region.
To make sure that SIM-map ready for VoLTE:
- Insert it into the SIM 1 slot (on most Xiaomi VoLTE works only with the first SIM).
- Go to Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks β [Yours. SIM] β Type of network.
- If there is a 4G option on the list, the card is compatible, unless there is a 4G/3G/2G option, a replacement is required.
| Operator. | SIM requirements | Tariffs with VoLTE | Verification code |
|---|---|---|---|
| MTS | USIM (8 contacts) | All except Super MTS. | *111*525# |
| Beeline | USIM (since 2019) | All except "It's Simple." | *110*180# |
| MegaFon | USIM (required) | 500.β½/moss | *105*500# |
| Tele2. | Any USIM. | All except "My Talk." | *155*1# |

If you use two of them SIM-The card, VoLTE will only work on the one that is installed in the slot. SIM1. To activate VoLTE on the second SIM, Physically change the cards.
Step 3: Enabling VoLTE in Xiaomi Settings
If the smartphone and SIM-The card supports VoLTE, you just have to turn the option on the menu. The path to settings may vary depending on the version. MIUI (12, 13 or 14), but the general scheme is:
- Open the Settings. β SIM-maps and mobile networks.
- Choose yours. SIM-card (if two of them).
- Tap by Network Type and select 4G (preferably) or 4G/3G/2G (auto).
- Go back and find VoLTE Calls (or Improved Calls). Switch the slider to On.
On some models (e.g. Redmi Note 11), the option is hidden to find it:
- Enter #86583## in the dialer and it will open the hidden VoLTE menu.
- Or go to Settings β Additional β Mobile Network β VoLTE calls.
If the "VoLTE Call" option is not activated in gray, it means that the operator does not support the technology for your region or tariff. The solution is to call support and request activation manually (for MTS and Beeline this takes up to 24 hours).
Update MIUI firmware to the latest version |Replace SIM with USIM (if old) |Install SIM in slot 1| Check compatibility tariff |Activate 4G in network settings-->
Step 4: Update the firmware to work properly with VoLTE
One of the most common bugs, VoLTE, turns on, but disappears after a day or two, due to bugs in the MIUI firmware, and the solution is to upgrade to the latest stable version:
- Go to Settings β About the phone β System update.
- Click Check Updates and wait for the latest version to download.
- If there are no updates but VoLTE is not working, download the firmware manually from en.miui.com (select Stable, not Developer).
For POCO and Redmi models with Chinese firmware, you will need:
- Unlock the bootloader through the Mi Unlock Tool (instructions on the official website).
- Install global firmware via Fastboot or Recovery.
β οΈ Warning: If VoLTE stopped working after the update, reset your network settings: β SIM-maps and mobile networks β Reset mobile network settings. This will delete the stored access points. APN, but it'll bring VoLTE back.
What if after the update, VoLTE disappeared from the settings?
Step 5: Solving VoLTE issues on Xiaomi
If VoLTE is enabled but calls are still 3G or the sound is interrupted, try these methods:
- π Phone reboot: Sometimes VoLTE "hangs" after turning on.A simple reboot helps in 60% of cases.
- πΆ Manual network selection: Go to Settings β SIM-map β Select a network and select a operator manually (not "automatically").
- π οΈ Reset APN: Remove all access points and add them again (options) APN for VoLTE is available on the operator's website).
- π± Verification IMEI: If VoLTE worked but suddenly stopped, check it out. IMEI If it is null or incorrect, restoration is required (instruction below).
To restore the IMEI (if it has dropped):
- Download the MTK Engineering Mode app (for MediaTek processors) or Qualcomm IMEI Tool (for Snapdragon).
- Enter the original IMEI (it is listed on the box or under the battery).
- Restart your phone and check for VoLTE.
If nothing works, check if VoLTE is blocking your VPN or firewall. Turn them off and try calling again.

If VoLTE turns on but disappears after a few hours, the fault is the power saving bug MIUI. Add the Phone app to battery optimization exceptions: Settings β Battery β Battery Optimization β All apps β Phone β No restrictions.
Step 6: Verification of VoLTE and Communication Quality Test
How do you make sure that VoLTE is actually working, and not just showing up in the settings? Here are 3 ways to check:
- π Call with active Internet: Open YouTube or Speedtest during a conversation. If the video is loaded, VoLTE works (a normal call would shut down the Internet).
- π Status bar indicator: During a call, a VoLTE sign should appear next to the signal level or HD.
- π Code. USSD: Dial ##4636##, go to Phone Information and check the Voice Network Type bar. LTE β It works.
If VoLTE works, but the quality of communication is poor:
- Check the 4G signal level (should be at least -100 dBm).
- Turn off Wi-Fi Calling (it may conflict with VoLTE).
- Try calling from another device - the problem may be on the side of the interlocutor.
For a connection speed test, call yourself from another phone and record the time. With VoLTE, the connection should occur in 1-2 seconds (versus 5-10 seconds on 3G).
