Why Xiaomiโs TV connection may not work the first time
Xiaomi smartphones (including Redmi, POCO and Black Shark) support several ways to transfer the screen to the TV, but not all of them work equally stable. The main problem is the variety of protocols: the same method can work perfectly on the Mi TV 4S, but refuse to work with Samsung QLED due to manufacturer restrictions. For example, Miracast (wireless standard) is often blocked on LG TVs older than 2019, and Google Cast requires mandatory authorization in one Google account.
Another common mistake is ignoring the MIUI version. In firmware older than MIUI 12, the wireless projection menu is hidden deeper, and in MIUI 14+, a separate option for the Game Turbo appeared that can conflict with the broadcast. We tested all the current methods on devices from Xiaomi 11T Pro to Redmi Note 12 and identified key nuances that the manufacturer does not specify in the official instructions.
This article is the only complete guide to the limitations of specific Xiaomi TV and smartphone models, including workarounds for common bugs (e.g., โno sound when connectedโ or โscreen flickeringโ).
Method 1: Connect via Wi-Fi Direct (Miracast) - without a router
Miracast allows you to broadcast Xiaomiโs screen on TV without intermediaries (router or cables), but requires support for the technology with both devices. This method works on all Mi TVs (except the earliest models of 2016), as well as on most Sony Bravia TVs, Philips with Android TV and Samsung Q/UHD series (2018 and later).
Important: on Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 13+, the wireless projection option has been moved to Settings โ Connections and Sharing โ Screen Transfer. In older versions, the path is different: Settings โ Additional โ Wireless Display.
- ๐ฑ On your smartphone: open Settings โ Connections and sharing โ Screen transfer. Turn on the option and wait until you find the available devices.
- ๐บ On TV: Activate Screen Mirroring (on Mi) TV โ Settings โ Connection and sharing โ Wireless display).
- ๐ Pair: Select the name of your TV in the list on your smartphone. Confirm the connection on both devices.
- โก Nuance: If the image is lagging, reduce the resolution of the broadcast in the Miracast settings (option Image Quality).
โ ๏ธ Attention: On TVs LG If you have webOS below version 4.0, Miracast may not work due to manufacturer limitations, in which case use Google Cast (mode 2) or HDMI-adapter.
Method 2: Google Cast (Chromecast) โ for Android TV and Smart TV
Google Cast (aka Chromecast) is a more stable protocol than Miracast, but requires both devices to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. The main advantage is the support for most modern TVs (including Samsung Tizen and LG webOS 5.0+) and the ability to broadcast not only the screen, but also individual applications (YouTube, Netflix).
On Xiaomi, Google Cast is built into the system, but you need to activate it first:
- Make sure that the TV has Google Home (for Android TV) or built-in Cast support (for Samsung, this is a Smart View option).
- On your smartphone, open Settings โ Connections and Sharing โ Screen Transfer.
- Turn on the Wireless Display option and select your TV from the list.
- If required, confirm the connection on TV (confirmation code may appear).
To stream only videos (without the whole screen), use the Cast icon in supported apps (for example, YouTube or Google Photos) to reduce the load on the smartphone and reduce latency.
Connected to one Wi-Fi network| The latest software update is installed on TV | Bluetooth is enabled on the smartphone (needed to pair) | VPN and proxy are disabled (can block Cast)
-->
| Model TV | Miracast support | Support for Google Cast | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi Mi TV 4S/5 | โ Yes. | โ Yes. | It works better through built-in Miracast. |
| Samsung QLED (2020+) | โ No (blocking) | โ Yes. | Use Smart View in the TV menu |
| LG OLED (webOS 5.0+) | โ ๏ธ Partially. | โ Yes. | Miracast only works on Android TV models |
| Sony Bravia (Android TV) | โ Yes. | โ Yes. | Both methods are stable, but Cast connects faster. |
Method 3: HDMI Connection โ Maximum quality without lags
If you need a minimum response time (for example, to play games or watch movies in 4K), the only reliable option is a wired connection via HDMI. This will require a USB-C โ HDMI adapter (for new Xiaomi models) or Micro-USB โ HDMI (for older smartphones).
Important: Not all adapters support audio output. For full broadcast, choose models marked 4K@60Hz and HDCP 2.2 (for example, Baseus HDMI Adapter or the original from Xiaomi).
- ๐ Connect the adapter to the smartphone, and HDMI-cable to the TV (use the port) HDMI 2.0 or newer for 4K).
- ๐ฑ On your smartphone, select Screen Transfer (usually appears automatically after connecting).
- ๐ฎ For games, activate Game Mode in your TV settings to reduce input latency.
- โก If the image does not appear, check if your DisplayPort Alt Mode adapter supports it (this should be indicated in the specifications).
โ ๏ธ Attention: On smartphones POCO F3/F4 redmi K40/K50 when connected through HDMI Charging may be turned off. Use a hub with an additional port. USB-C PD feeding.
Why is there no sound through HDMI?
Method 4: USB Connection (MHL/OTG) โ for older TVs
If your TV doesnโt support you HDMI Wi-Fi Direct can be used to try connecting via USB-port MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link or OTG. This method works on most Xiaomis up to and including the Redmi Note 9, but requires a special adapter.
It's important: MHL and OTG โ protocols. MHL It allows you to display video and sound, and OTG โ It's just like a flash drive, and you need to broadcast the screen. MHL-Adapter (e.g. Xiaomi) MHL 2.0).
- ๐ Connect the adapter. MHL to the Micro-USB port or USB-C smartphone.
- ๐บ Connect the adapter to the TV via HDMI-cable.
- ๐ On your smartphone, turn on Mode MHL (In some models, it is activated automatically).
- โก If the screen doesnโt appear, check if your TV supports login. USB-MHL (That's what the manual says).
Limitations of the method:
- โ It doesnโt work on smartphones with Snapdragon. 8 Gen 1/2 (for example, Xiaomi 12/13).
- โ Maximum authorization โ 1080p (4K unsupported).
- โ Charging a smartphone during broadcast is impossible.
๐ก
If your TV doesnโt support you MHL, but USB-Port, you can use it as a media player: copy movies to your smartphone, connect it to TV through the phone. OTG-cable and play files through the built-in TV player.
Method 5: Use of broadcast applications (DLNA/UPnP)
If the built-in methods don't work, you can use third-party applications that support DLNA or UPnP. These technologies allow you to broadcast media files (photos, videos, music) without full screen transfer. Popular applications:
- ๐ฌ LocalCast supports Chromecast, DLNA and local files.
- ๐บ BubbleUPnP is the best choice for you UPnP/DLNA (It works even on old TV).
- ๐ฎ ApowerMirror โ allows you to broadcast the screen with minimal latency (suitable for games).
Instructions for LocalCast:
- Install the app on your smartphone and open it.
- Select the file to broadcast (or press Cast Screen to transfer the screen).
- In the list of devices, select your TV.
- Confirm the connection on TV (entry may be required) PIN-code).
โ ๏ธ Note: Apps like ApowerMirror or TeamViewer require the server part to be installed on TV. LG WebOS is not possible โ only use it. DLNA-applications.
Common Problems and Their Solutions
Even with the right connection, there can be errors, and we've collected the most common ones and ways to fix them:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The screen is plugged in, but there's no sound. | The wrong sound source is chosen on TV. | In the TV settings, select HDMI ARC or External speaker |
| Image lagging or slowing down | Weak Wi-Fi signal or high processor load | Reduce the broadcast resolution or connect to HDMI |
| The TV is not on the list of devices. | Screen Mirroring is disabled on TV | Activate mode in TV settings and restart both devices |
| When connected to HDMI, the screen flickers | Incompatible adapter or cable | Use a certified adapter with support for 4K@60Hz |
If none of the methods worked, check:
- ๐ Update the firmware on your smartphone and TV (especially relevant for Mi) TV PatchWall).
- ๐ถ Reconnect to Wi-Fi (sometimes changing your router channel from 5 GHz to 2.4 GHz helps).
- ๐ Try another cable or adapter (cheap Chinese adapters often don't support all features).
๐ก
If you have a Xiaomi Mi TV, upgrade your firmware first through Settings โ About TV โ System Update. Older versions of PatchWall often lack support for new broadcast protocols.
