Connecting Xiaomi devices to a laptop may be necessary to transfer files, update firmware, backup or synchronize data. The laptop can't see the phone, the drivers don't get installed, and the Bluetooth connection is constantly broken. Xiaomi's hardware is that it often requires proprietary utilities or customizations to work fully with a PC, such as MIUI smartphones that block USB debugging by default, and Mi Band fitness bracelets don't support direct connection to a computer without intermediaries at all, and we'll show you how to get around these limitations and set up the connection correctly.
1. Connecting Xiaomi smartphone to laptop via USB
The most common way is to use a USB-Type-C or Micro-USB cable (depending on the phone model), but simply sticking the wire into the port is not enough: you need to set up the data mode.
By default, when connecting, Xiaomi offers only charging, so that the laptop recognizes the phone as a drive:
- Connect the cable to your laptop and smartphone.
- On the screen of the phone will appear a notification Charging via USB – tap it.
- Select File Transfer (or MTP in older versions of MIUI).
If the device is not determined:

Xiaomi’s stable connection to a Windows laptop requires special drivers, without which the phone can be identified as an unknown device or work with errors.

Mi Band, Xiaomi Watch and other wearable devices don't connect directly to the laptop, but you need a smartphone with Mi Fitness or Zepp Life to work with them.
Method 1: Exporting data via smartphone

Android Debug Bridge (ADB) allows you to control a Xiaomi smartphone from a laptop at the system level.

To diagnose problems with USB-connection:
- On your laptop, open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
- Check the Portable Devices or Other Devices section.
- If there is an exclamation point, update the driver manually, indicating the path to the folder with the Mi PC Suite.

If neither method works, try connecting your phone to another laptop, and if the problem persists, the malfunction may be in the smartphone's USB-C port or cable.
