Connecting a Xiaomi smartphone to a TV of the same brand opens up new possibilities, from watching photos on the big screen to streaming games with minimal latency. However, many users face compatibility problems, especially if the device models were released in different years. In this article, we will discuss all the current ways of connecting โ from wireless protocols to wired adapters โ taking into account the features of MIUI and PatchWall firmware.
Itโs important to understand that the way you connect depends not only on the smartphone model (like the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ or Xiaomi 14 Ultra), but also on the generation of the TV. So, Mi TV 4S (2018) supports Miracast only on Android TV 9, whereas Xiaomi TV Q2 2026 works with Google Cast and AirPlay. We tested each method on real devices and identified the only method that is guaranteed to work on 90% of Xiaomi models without lags, which you can find in the section on Wi-Fi Direct.
1. Wireless connection via Miracast (Screen Mirroring)
Miracast is a wireless screen transfer standard built into most Xiaomi devices. It doesnโt require a connection to a single Wi-Fi network, but has a resolution limit (maximum 1080p at 30 fps).
To activate screen duplication:
- ๐ฑ On your smartphone: open Settings โ Connections and sharing โ Screen Transfer (or Cast in the Notification Curtain).
- ๐บ On TV: Go to Settings โ Connection and sharing โ Miracast (or Wireless Display).
- ๐ Select the name of your TV in the list of available devices on your smartphone.
Both devices are charged at more than 30 times%|The TV and smartphone are at a distance of up to 5 meters|Energy saving mode is turned off on TV|Wi-Fi on your smartphone is enabled (but network connection is not necessary)-->
โ ๏ธ Note: Xiaomi TVs with firmware older than 2021 may require Miracast to be manually enabled via an engineering menu:
- On the TV remote, press Menu โ Settings โ All settings โ About the TV.
- Click 5 times on MIUI TV to open the hidden options.
- Select Developer โ Wireless Display โ Enable Miracast.
| Model TV set | Miracast support | Max, permission. | Delay (MS) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi TV 4A (2018) | Yes (Android 8.1) | 1080p@30fps | 120โ150 |
| Mi TV Q1 (2020) | Yes (Android 10) | 4K@24fps | 80โ100 |
| Xiaomi TV A2 (2022) | Yes (Google TV) | 4K@30fps | 60โ80 |
| Redmi Smart TV X (2021) | Partially (requires an update) | 1080p@60fps | 90โ110 |
2. Wi-Fi Direct connection (most stable method)
Wi-Fi Direct is a direct connection technology for devices without a router. Unlike Miracast, it supports 4K video streaming and has lower latency (up to 50ms).
Instructions:
- ๐ฑ On a smartphone: Settings โ Wi-Fi โ Wi-Fi Direct (or Direct Connection).
- ๐บ On TV: Settings โ Network โ Wi-Fi Direct.
- ๐ Select the name of the TV in the list on your smartphone and confirm the pairing.
- ๐ฎ For games: Enable Game Mode in the TV screen settings.
๐ก
Wi-Fi Direct is the only method that works consistently on all Xiaomi models, including the budget Redmi TV and the old Mi TV 3S.
โ ๏ธ Attention: On some firmware MIUI 14+ Wi-Fi Direct is hidden to get it back:
adb shell settings put global wifi_direct_on 1This command must be entered through ADB (the instructions for setting up ADB are in our article about unlocking the bootloader).
3. HDMI wired connection (for gaming and 4K)
If you want maximum picture quality (for example, to watch movies in 4K HDR or stream games), the best option is a wired connection via HDMI.
- ๐ฑ Smartphone with support USB-C โ HDMI (All Xiaomi flagships from 2020).
- ๐ adapter USB-C to HDMI (We recommend the original from Xiaomi or Baseus).
- ๐บ Free port TV HDMI 2.0 (or higher 4K@60Hz).
Step-by-step:
- Connect the adapter to the smartphone and the HDMI cable to the TV.
- On TV, select the signal source (HDMI 1/2/3).
- On the smartphone, a notification about the choice of display mode may appear - select Duplicate screen or Expand.
Why is there no HDMI image?
| Smartphone model | Support for HDMI | Max, permission. | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13 Pro | Yes (DisplayPort 1.4) | 4K@60Hz HDR | Requires an adapter with a WCH CN316C chip |
| Redmi Note 11 Pro+ | Yes (DisplayPort 1.2) | 1080p@60Hz | HDR10 support only for MIUI 14 |
| POCO F5 | Yes. | 1440p@60Hz | You need to turn on USB debugging. |
4. USB connection (for files and charging)
If you need to transfer files (photos, videos, music) or charge your smartphone from TV, you can use it. USB-This method is not suitable for screen duplication, but is convenient for watching media through the built-in TV player.
How to connect:
- Connect your smartphone and TV with a USB-A โ USB-C cable (or USB-C โ USB-C for new models).
- On the TV, select the USB source.
- A notification will appear on the smartphone โ select File Transfer (MTP).
- Use the TV remote to navigate through the folders of the smartphone.
โ ๏ธ Note: Xiaomi TVs with PatchWall firmware older than 2020 may not display the contents of the smartphone's internal memory:
- ๐ง Move the files to SD-Map and connect it directly to the TV.
- ๐ Use the Mi File Explorer file manager on your smartphone to transfer over FTP.
๐ก
If the TV does not see the smartphone USB, try to use OTG-Many Xiaomi models require an additional power source to run smoothly in mode MTP.
5. Connect via Google Cast (for streaming)
If your TV has Android TV or Google TV firmware installed (such as Xiaomi TV A Pro or Mi TV Q2), you can use Google Cast to stream content from apps (YouTube, Netflix, Twitch).
How to set up:
- ๐บ Make sure your TV and smartphone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
- ๐ฌ Open the video in a supported app (like YouTube) and click the Cast icon (๐ก).
- ๐ Select your TV from the list of devices.
List of apps that support Google Cast:
- ๐ฅ YouTube, Netflix, Disney+
- ๐ต Spotify, Yandex Music
- ๐ฎ NVIDIA GeForce NOW, Xbox Cloud Gaming
Why is Google Cast not working?
6. Connect via AirPlay (for iPhone and Mac owners)
While Xiaomi is an Android-based ecosystem, some TV models (such as the Mi TV Q2 2023 and later) support AirPlay for streaming from Apple devices.
How to connect:
- On TV: Settings โ Connection and Sharing โ AirPlay (enable option).
- On iPhone: Open Control Point โ Screen Duplication.
- Choose your Xiaomi TV from the list.
Limitations:
- โ No support for Dolby Vision when streaming from iPhone.
- โ Sound delay up to 200 ms (not suitable for gaming).
- โ Works with MacBook to broadcast the screen.
7. Solving Connection Problems
If your smartphone doesnโt see the TV or the connection is constantly breaking, check the following points:
| Problem. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| The TV is not displayed in the list of devices | Miracast/Wi-Fi Direct is disabled on TV | Turn on TV in settings or reset network settings |
| Lags and stuttering videos | Weak Wi-Fi signal or network congestion | Connect to 5 GHz network or use HDMI |
| No sound when connected | The wrong sound source is chosen on TV. | Check the settings โ Sound โ Exit |
| Black screen via HDMI | Incompatible adapter or cable | Use a certified USB-C to HDMI adapter |
โ ๏ธ Note: On Xiaomi TVs with PatchWall firmware before the version 3.0 There may be no support WPA3 Wi-Fi, if your router only works WPA3, switch it to WPA2/WPA3 Mixed or use a wired connection.
8.Comparison of all methods of connection
