Why you should connect Xiaomi to a Samsung TV
Modern Samsung Smart TVs and Xiaomi smartphones (Redmi, POCO, Mi) can work in tandem, turning your phone into a universal remote, media center, or even a gaming controller. But how exactly do you connect these devices if they are from different manufacturers? In this article, 4 working methods with step-by-step instructions, including setting up through Mi Remote, SmartThings, Wi-Fi Direct and Screen Mirroring.
The main advantages of such a connection:
- ๐ฎ Management TV from a phone instead of a standard remote (including voice commands)
- ๐ฑ Transferring the smartphone screen to the large screen without wires
- ๐ Using the phone as a media desk for YouTube, Netflix or IPTV
- ๐ Fast transfer of files (photos, videos) directly to the TV
Importantly, not all Samsung models support the same protocols. For example, older J series TVs (2015โ2017) may not work with SmartThings, and the new QLED (2020+) support all ways. Check the year of release of your model in the settings: Settings โ Support โ About TV.
Method 1: Connect via Mi Remote (for all Xiaomi)
Xiaomiโs Mi Remote app can emulate an infrared remote for most TVs, including Samsung. This method works even without Wi-Fi, but requires an infrared port on the phone (all Xiaomi has, except for some POCO F and Redmi Note 11 and later).
How to set up:
- Download Mi Remote from Google Play (or through the iPhone App Store, but the functionality is limited).
- Open the app and click Add Device โ TV โ Samsung.
- Point your phone at the TV (up to 5 meters away) and hold the test button until the TV responds.
- Save the remote to your favorites for quick access.
Check for an IR port on your phone (black glass at the top)
Turn the TV on (not necessarily with a button)
Make sure there are no obstacles between the phone and TV.
Update Mi Remote to the latest version-->
Limitations of the method:
- โ Does not work for Smart Hub management (only basic features: on, volume, channels)
- โ No voice control support (unlike the original Samsung remote)
- โ ๏ธ On some Samsung models (series) Q60B and later) you may need to manually enter the remote code (see below for a list of codes).
Codes for manual input in Mi Remote (Samsung)
Method 2: SmartThings โ Samsungโs Official Solution
SmartThings is Samsungโs ecosystem for managing smart devices, including TVs, with the advantage of having full control over the Smart Hub, voice commands (via Bixby or Google Assistant), and the ability to create automation (like turning on TV when you start Netflix on your phone).
Instructions for connection:
- Install SmartThings on your Xiaomi.
- Sign up or sign in through your Samsung account (if not, create a new one).
- Click Add Device (+) โ Quick Setup โ TV.
- Select your Samsung model from the list (or scan your model) QR-back-pad TV).
- Confirm the connection on the TV (the pairing code will appear).
| Function | Mi Remote | SmartThings |
|---|---|---|
| Channel management | โ | โ |
| Voice assistant | โ | โ (Bixby/Google) |
| File transfer | โ | โ (via Media") |
| Screen Mirroring | โ | โ (newer) |
| Working without Wi-Fi | โ (ICU) | โ |
โ ๏ธ Note: If the TV is not on the SmartThings Device List, update your firmware TV through settings โ Support โ Older models (until 2018) may require manual input IP-TV addresses in the application settings.

If SmartThings canโt see the TV, check that both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (guest networks are not supported). VPN On the phone, it can block local detection.
Method 3: Wi-Fi Direct โ Direct Connection without a router
Wi-Fi Direct allows you to connect Xiaomi and Samsung TV directly, without intermediaries like a router, which is useful for transferring files or managing TV in places without the Internet (for example, in the country).
How to set up:
- On TV: Settings โ General โ Network โ Wi-Fi Direct โ Enable.
- On Xiaomi phone: Settings โ Wi-Fi โ Wi-Fi Direct (or additionally โ Wi-Fi Direct in older MIUI).
- Select your TV from the list of available devices.
- Confirm the connection on both devices (entry may be required) PIN-screen-code TV).
After you connect, you can:
- ๐ Transmit photos and videos through the Gallery โ Send. โ Wi-Fi Direct.
- ๐ต Manage music playback through apps like Mi Music.
- ๐ฅ๏ธ Use your phone as a touchpad for your Smart Hub (in some Samsung models).
โ ๏ธ Warning: Wi-Fi Direct shuts off your TV's internet access. If you need to stream content from the web (like YouTube) and control from your phone at the same time, use SmartThings or Screen Mirroring.
Method 4: Screen Mirroring (Duplicate screen)
Screen Mirroring (or Miracast) allows you to broadcast Xiaomi screen on Samsung TV wirelessly. It is convenient for watching videos, games or presentations. The method works on all Xiaomi phones with MIUI 10 and newer, as well as on Samsung TVs with Smart View (2016 and later).
Step-by-step:
- On TV: Source โ Screen Mirroring (or Settings โ General โ External device โ Screen Duplicating device).
- On Xiaomi: For MIUI 12/13/14: Settings โ Connection and Sharing โ Screen Transfer. For older versions: Settings โ Screen โ Wireless Display.
Select your TV from the list and confirm your connection.
Critical information: On some Samsung models (e.g., on some Samsung models, QN90B) Screen Mirroring only works when Instant On is enabled. โ General. โ Energy conservation โ Quick on mode. If the screen is not duplicated, check this item.
Frequent problems and solutions:
- ๐ Image Latency: Reduce screen resolution in Mirroring settings or connect via 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
- ๐ซ No sound: check that the phone is not activated mode "Imagine only" in the transmission settings.
- ๐ Permanent communication breaks: reboot router or use Wi-Fi Direct.
๐ก
Screen Mirroring consumes a lot of power. Charge your phone before long-term use or plug it into charging.
Comparison of methods: which one to choose?
The choice of connection method depends on your tasks:
| The challenge | Best method. | The alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement of remote | Mi Remote (simplicity) | SmartThings (Extended Functions) |
| File transfer | Wi-Fi Direct | SmartThings (via Media) |
| Screen duplication | Screen Mirroring | Through HDMI-adapter (if there is no Wi-Fi) |
| Voice control | SmartThings + Bixby | Google Assistant (via SmartThings) |
| Phone games | Screen Mirroring + gamepad | Wi-Fi Direct (less lags) |
For most users, the best solution would be a combination of SmartThings (for control) and Screen Mirroring (for broadcasting content). If you have an old TV without a Smart Hub, then all you have to do is buy a Mi Remote or a Mi TV Stick adapter.
Frequent mistakes and their solution
Even with the right setup, you can have failures.-5 problems and ways of eliminating them:
- TV not visible in SmartThings: Check that the TV and phone are on the same network (not the guest!). Update the TV firmware (Settings โ Support โ Software Update). Reboot the router (sometimes DHCP does not issue IP to the TV).
- Mi Remote does not work: Make sure your phone is on an IR port (Settings โ Special Features โ Infrared Port). Try another remote code (see spoiler above). Check the battery in the Samsung remote, some models block IR control when discharged.
Screen Mirroring lags:
- Connect to a 5 GHz network (instead of 2.4 GHz).
- Close the background apps on your phone.
- Reduce the screen resolution in the Mirroring settings.
โ ๏ธ Warning: If after connecting via SmartThings the TV spontaneously turns off, turn off the Eco-mode function in the settings TV (Settings โ General. โ Energy saving: This function may interpret the lack of activity on the remote as a signal to turn off.
