When you pick up your Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco smartphone and realize you’ve forgotten your pattern lock, it can cause panic. The lock screen becomes an insurmountable barrier that hides all your contacts, photos and apps. However, modern Android security systems and MIUI shells (HyperOS) provide several scenarios for restoring access.
It's important to understand that the choice of method depends on many factors: the version of the operating system, the presence of an active Internet connection and binding to a Mi Account. Some ways allow you to save user data, while others require a complete reset to factory settings. We will consider all the current options, from the most gentle to radical.
Before you start taking action, you should calm down and analyze which security tools were configured in advance, often it is the presence of the “Find Device” function enabled or just a stable Wi-Fi connection that becomes the decisive factor for successful unlocking without losing information.
Using a Mi Account to Reset a Lock
The most civilized and secure way provided by the manufacturer is to use the built-in function through Xiaomi services. If your device was signed in to Mi Account and enabled the function "Find Device" (Find Device), the system allows remotely or through a certain number of unsuccessful attempts to enter reset the password.
After five incorrect attempts to enter the pattern lock, a wait timer or a “Forgot password” button may appear on the screen. Clicking on this option will require authorization to your Mi Account, which confirms that you are the legitimate owner of the gadget.
- 🔑 Enter the username and password from your Mi Account directly on the locked screen if the corresponding form appears.
- 🌐 Make sure your smartphone is connected to the internet (Wi-Fi or mobile network), otherwise data verification is not possible.
- 🔄 After successful authorization, the system will offer to set a new way to lock or completely disable it.
⚠️ Note: This method only works if Find Device was activated before locking. If you previously disabled this option in your security settings, this method will not work.
What if your Mi Account is also forgotten?
It’s worth noting that in recent versions of the HyperOS shell and new Android security patches, policies may have changed, and in some cases, the system may require not just a password from an account, but a forced reset to confirm ownership if the level of suspicion is high.
💡
Having an active Mi Account and geolocation enabled are your main trump cards for saving data when you lock.
Unlocking the Google Find My Device
An alternative and often more effective method, especially for devices with a “clean” Android or older version of MIUI, is to use Google services. Google account is tied to each smartphone on the first turn on, and the service “Find My Device” has deep security access rights.
To use this method, you will need a computer or other smartphone with Internet access, you need to go to the official website of the Google service and log in under the same account that was used on the blocked Xiaomi.
The service's interface not only tracks the location of the gadget, but also manages its state. The Erase Device feature will delete all data, including the graphical password. However, some older versions of Android (up to 5.0-6.0) had the option of simply changing the lock password, but on modern Android 10-14 it works like a full Wipe.
- 📍 Go to the site. android.com/find Sign in to your Google account.
- 📱 Select a locked device from the list at the top of the screen.
- 🗑️ Click the “Clear Device” button to delete the password and all data.
The important nuance is the connection requirement: the smartphone must be on, have a battery charge and, critically, be connected to the network. If the device is in flight mode or without a SIM card, the command from the server will not arrive until the connection appears.
Recovery Mode (Hard Reset)
If the software methods using accounts fail or access to them is lost, the only proven option is Hard Reset, which is a complete reboot of the system with the cleaning of the user's memory partition.
To enter Recovery Mode, you need to use a combination of physical buttons, because the screen is locked, touch controls are not available, and navigation is done with volume and power buttons.
☑️ Algorithm for Hard Reset
- Turn off your smartphone completely. If it doesn't respond, press the power button on the phone. 10-15 seconds.
- Press the Volume Up button and the Power button at the same time.
- Hold both buttons until the Mi logo appears, then release the power button while continuing to keep the volume.
- From the Recovery menu (usually in English), select Wipe Data.
- Confirm the action by selecting Wipe All Data and wait until the process is complete.
⚠️ Warning: After resetting through Recovery, protection will work FRP (Factory Reset Protection. You'll need to enter a password from a Google account that was synced to your phone before the reset.
The cleaning process can take anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes depending on the storage capacity and speed of the drive.Do not interrupt the process or try to shut down the device at this point so as not to damage the file system.
💡
If the volume buttons do not work (flagging or broken), use ADB commands from your computer, but for this, the USB debugging mode must be enabled in advance.
Delete password through Fastboot and PC
For advanced users who are not afraid of working with the command line, there is a method of unlocking through Fastboot mode. This method is often effective when Recovery Mode is unavailable or causes errors. However, it requires a Windows computer and installed Xiaomi drivers (ADB/Fastboot drivers).
The essence of the method is to send a special command that forcibly clears the partition that stores the data about the lock screen. This does not always delete personal files (photos, music), but in the latest versions of Android with data encryption, this often amounts to a complete reset, since the encryption key is lost.
fastboot erase userdataTo enter Fastboot mode on the device turned off, press the Loud Down and Power button. The screen will show a picture of a hare in a hat-eared robot repairing. Connect your smartphone to your PC via the original USB-cable.
- 💻 Download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot on the computer.
- 🔌 Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (the hare on the screen).
- ⌨️ In the command line, enter fastboot devices to check the connection.
- 🧹 Run the command fastboot erase userdata or fastboot erase persist.
It’s worth noting that on devices with encryption enabled (and this is the standard for Android 7 and above), the erase userdata command will delete all data, the only difference being that this method sometimes allows you to bypass errors that occur in standard Recovery.
Comparison of Xiaomi Unlocking Methods
To make it easier for you to choose the right option, we have systematized the main methods in a table, each method has its own advantages and risks that must be considered before starting the procedure.
| Method | Data retention | We need the Internet. | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Account. | Yes (partially) | Yes. | Low. |
| Google Find Device | No (full reset) | Yes. | Low. |
| Recovery Mode | No (full reset) | No. | Medium |
| Fastboot (PC) | No (depending on version) | No. | Tall. |
As you can see from the table, the chances of saving photos and contacts without a backup are minimal. Modern Android security standards are built so that user data is encrypted with a key tied to the lock password. Without a password, data remains “digital garbage” that can not be read.
So if the information on the phone is critical and none of the soft methods help, it's best to go to a dedicated service center, and professionals can try to dump memory or use more sophisticated hardware methods, although they don't give 100% warranty.
Prevention and backup
Not only is the problem of forgotten passwords solved by emergency measures, but also by proper prevention, and regular backups are the only way to ensure that losing access to a device does not become a disaster.
Use cloud services. Google Photos automatically saves pictures, Google Contacts syncs the phone book, and Mi Cloud can create full copies of settings and messages. Set up automatic sync right now while the phone is unlocked.
💡
Set up Smart Lock in your security settings, which lets you leave your phone unlocked when it’s at your home (geozone) or connected to your smartwatch via Bluetooth.
It's also a good idea to write graphic keys and complex passwords to a safe place, like a paper notebook or a password manager on a computer. Human memory is prone to errors, especially when we use many different combinations for different services.
Remember that installing third-party apps to “password reset” from unverified sources often results in a device being infected with viruses.
