In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to log into Recovery on the Mi A1, including hardware methods, ADB commands and the nuances of working with custom firmware. We will focus on typical errors that prevent users from entering the recovery menu, and give clear recommendations for their elimination. If your smartphone is locked, does not turn on or requires a reset, you will find a solution here.
Important: Xiaomi Mi A1 has two types of Recovery: Google's stock and custom (TWRP) if you installed it. The instructions are different for them - we'll look at both options.
1. Standard method: Enter through buttons (for stock recovery)
The most versatile method that works even on a fully discharged or locked device is suitable for Google’s original Recovery, which is installed by default on the Mi A1.
You'll only need physical buttons on your smartphone.
- ⚡ Turn off your phone. If it freezes, hold the power button for 10 to 15 seconds until the screen goes out.
- 🔄 Press: Power button (right) Volume button (top left)
- 🕒 Hold both buttons for at least 8-10 seconds until the Xiaomi or Android logo appears with the robot lying down.
- 📱 Release the buttons and you will see the Recovery Mode menu (black screen with blue text).
If the phone just boots into the system after the logo, you let go of the buttons too early. Try again, holding the combination longer.

⚠️ Attention: On Mi A1 with an unlocked loader and installed TWRP If you see a color menu with touch control after power retention and volume, you have custom Recovery (see Section 3).
2. Alternative button combinations for Recovery
If the standard method didn't work, try these options. They're relevant for different firmware versions and device states:

If neither combination worked, it could be a hardware button malfunction or firmware damage, in which case try the ADB method (Section 4).

3. Custom Recovery Entrance (TWRP/OrangeFox) on Mi A1
If you've installed TWRP or another custom Recovery, the login process may be different.
- 🎨 Color menu with touch control (instead of textového with volume buttons).
- 🔧 Additional functions: backup, partition mounting, terminal.
- 📱 Swipe support (for example, to confirm actions).
To sign in to TWRP on Mi A1, use the same combination:
Power button + Volume upBut after the TeamWin logo appears, release the buttons – the menu will load automatically.
Important: Some versions of the TWRP for the Mi A1 require you to log into the Fastboot first and then select Recovery through the menu with volume buttons. This is due to the features of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625-based bootloader.
What if TWRP asks for a password when downloading?
⚠️ Note: After updating the firmware through OTA If you see a standard menu from Google after you log in, you'll have to reinstall it. TWRP fastboot.
4. Entry into Recovery via ADB (if phone turns on)
If the physical buttons don't work or you prefer the software method, you can log in to Recovery via Android Debug Bridge (ADB).
- 🖥️ Computers with installed ADB-driver.
- 🔌 USB-cable (preferably original).
- 📱 Included debugging by USB on the phone (Settings) → The phone. → Assembly number (7 taps) → For developers → Debugging by USB).
Step-by-step:
- Connect the Mi A1 to your PC and confirm the debugging permission on your phone screen.
- Open the command prompt (Windows) or terminal (Linux/macOS) in the adb folder.
- Enter the command: adb devices Make sure the device is identified (serial number should appear).
- Run the command to reboot in Recovery: adb reboot recovery
If the team doesn’t work, try an alternative:

2. Reboot the phone and PC.
3. Update drivers via Google USB Driver (for Windows).

5. Frequent errors and their solutions
Mi A1 users often face problems logging into Recovery, and we'll take a look at the most common ones:
- 🔋 Phone doesn't respond to buttons: Check battery power (minimum 30%); plug the charger in for 10-15 minutes, then try again. If the buttons are physically damaged, use the method with a "switch" ADB.
- 🤖 A recumbent Android appears with an exclamation mark: This is normal for stock Recovery. + Volume up for 1-2 seconds to open the menu.
- 🔄 Phone loads to Fastboot instead of Recovery: In the Fastboot menu, select Recovery Mode with volume buttons and confirm the power button.
- 🚫 Recovery won't open, screen blinks: This is a sign of a damaged Recovery partition. Reflashing through fastboot is required.
💡
If the phone is stuck on the Xiaomi logo after resetting via Recovery, then the firmware is damaged, in which case only flashing through the Mi Flash Tool in EDL mode will help.
6.What to do after entering Recovery?
When you finally get to the Recovery menu, it’s important to understand which activities are safe and which can lead to data loss.
- 🔄 Reboot system now - restart to normal mode.
- 🗑️ Wipe data/factory Reset – Complete reset (deletes all data!).
- 📦 Apply update from ADB — installing updates via computer.
- 🔧 Mount /system — mounting the system partition (for experienced users).
If the goal is to reset settings, select Wipe data/factory reset, then confirm the action. To install custom firmware through TWRP Use the Install option and select ZIP-firmware.
⚠️ Attention: On Mi A1 With the unlocked bootloader, a reset via stock Recovery can lead to the device locking (you will be asked to enter a Xiaomi account even if there was none!). To avoid this, disable account binding in the settings before reset.
7. Access Restoration if Recovery is not working
If none of the methods worked, and the phone doesn’t load even into Recovery, radical measures remain:
- Fastboot Firmware: Download the official firmware for Mi A1 (codename tissot from Xiaomi Firmware Updater. Unpack the archive and launch the script flash_all.bat (Windows or flash_all.sh (Linux/macOS).
- Emergency firmware via EDL: Requires a special cable or testpoint to put your phone into Emergency Download Mode. Use the Mi Flash Tool with firmware for EDL.
Contacting the service center
- If the phone is warranty or you are not sure of your skills - it is better to entrust the repair to professionals.
Critical information: On the Mi A1 with a damaged recovery partition, an attempt to reset via the settings menu can result in a "brick" (complete failure).

Before you run through Fastboot or EDL, be sure to check the bootloader version! Installing firmware with an older version of the bootloader can lock the device. The version can be found in Fastboot mode.
