Why Xiaomiβs smartphone loses half of its functions without a Mi Account
Mi Accounts are not just a way to sync contacts or back up, they are a central node in the Xiaomi ecosystem, without which many features become useless icons, for example, without authorization you can not:
Use Mi Cloud Cloud Storage for photos and documents
- unlock the loader for installing custom firmware;
- activate smart devices (lamps, robot vacuum cleaners, cameras) through Mi Home;
Get Air Updates (OTA) on some models.
What's more, after a hard reset, the phone may require you to enter the account details that were previously linked, which is a Factory Reset Protection (FRP) measure. If you forget your login or password, you risk getting a brick instead of a working device, and then we'll go through all the login scenarios, from standard to emergency.
Standard sign-in to Mi-account through phone settings
The easiest way is to log in directly to the smartphone menu, which is suitable if:
- π± You have a new phone or you donβt need to enter an old account after a reset;

After successful authorization, the phone automatically syncs:
- π Contacts and calendars;
- πΈ Photo/video from Mi Cloud (if included);
- π± Notes, reminders, application data;
- π System settings (wallpaper, sounds, labels).
Sign in to Mi Account after resetting settings (FRP)
If you have done a factory reset (Wipe Data in Recovery), the phone can request data from the previous Mi Account. This is Factory Reset Protection (FRP), which works on all Xiaomi smartphones with MIUI 9 and newer.
Important: If you bought a phone with your hands and the seller didn't untie your account, you'll need his help. Without original data, it's almost impossible to unlock the device legally (bypassing exploits often leads to IMEI blocking).
How to Sign In If Your Phone Asks for an Old Account:
- On the lock screen, click Add Account (or Forgot Password?).
- Enter the email/phone that was tied to the phone before the reset.
- If you have forgotten your password, click Forgot your password and follow the recovery instructions (access to email or SMS is required).
- After a successful entry, the phone will offer to create a new one. PIN-code.
