Why Redmi 9 might require a reboot?
Xiaomi Redmi 9 is a reliable device, but even it sometimes hangs or works unstable.Reboot helps solve up to 80% of software problems, from slow operation to sudden dropouts of applications.
First, after installing major MIUI updates, the system can slow down, due to the optimization of new files in the background. Second, long periods of operation without turning off (over 72 hours) leads to cache accumulation and leakage of RAM. Third, critical application errors (especially gaming or banking) sometimes block the interface, leaving only the possibility of forced reboot.
It is important to distinguish between a normal reboot from a reset to a factory setting, because these procedures solve different tasks. The first simply restarts the system, saving all data, and the second deletes user files. In this article, we will only look at secure reboot methods that do not affect personal information.
Method 1: Standard Reboot through the Menu
The simplest and most recommended method is to use the built-in MIUI tools, which works when the smartphone responds to touch, but behaves unstable.
- Unlock the screen (enter a pattern lock or PIN if necessary).
- Hold the power button (located on the right end) for 2-3 seconds.
- In the menu that appears, select Reboot (circular arrow icon).
- Confirm the action by pressing OK.
It will take about 30-40 seconds. If the problem persists after the reboot, try other methods from this article. Note: on some Redmi 9 firmware, the menu item may be called Restart (in English).
Make sure the battery is at least 20% charged.
Close all working applications
Turn it off. USB-cables (if connected)
Save important data (in case of failure)-->
Why doesn't this always work? If your smartphone is too hung and doesn't respond to taps, the standard menu may not appear, and in such cases, a forced reboot (see next section) is required. And the problem may lie in a damaged power button, so only the service center will help.
Method 2: Forced Reboot (Hard Reboot)
When the Redmi 9 is completely getting stuck and does not respond to touch, hardware reboot will help, a method that simulates battery extraction (which is not possible on modern smartphones with non-removable batteries).
- Hold the Power button and the Volume Up button at the same time.
- Keep them clamped for 10-15 seconds until the Xiaomi logo appears.
- Release the buttons and wait for the system to boot up fully (it can take up to 1 minute).
This method works even with a completely black screen or endless boot. However, do not abuse the forced reboot - frequent hard reboot can damage the file system.

If after a forced reboot the smartphone does not turn on, connect it to the charger for 10-15 minutes - sometimes a discharged battery blocks the start.
β οΈ Warning: Forced reboot during update MIUI (If you have a progress bar on the screen, you can permanently shut down your smartphone, so wait until the process is complete or go to the service center.
Method 3: Reboot with Recovery Mode
If standard methods don't work, you can use Recovery Mode, which is useful when the smartphone is turned on but does not load beyond the Xiaomi logo.
- Turn off the phone (if it's on, hold power + Volume up before turning it off).
- Press the power and increase the volume at the same time.
- When the Mi logo appears, release the Power button, but continue to hold the Volume Up.
- In the recovery menu, select Reboot β Reboot to System (manage β volume buttons, confirmation β power button).
Redmi 9βs recovery menu has several reboot options:
- π Reboot system now - standard reboot
- π οΈ Apply update β installing updates (if downloaded in advance)
- π§Ή Wipe data β reset settings (deletes data!)
What to do if recovery does not open?
Power users can use recovery to install custom firmware, but this requires unlocking the bootloader and can void the warranty.
Method 4: Reboot through ADB (for advanced)
If you are familiar with the debugging of USB, Redmi 9 can be restarted via Android Debug Bridge (ADB). This method is useful when the touch screen is not working, but USB-The port is in good condition:
- π₯οΈ A computer with installed Xiaomi drivers and ADB
- π USB-cable (preferably original)
- βοΈ Included debugging by USB developer-setting
Instructions:
- Connect your smartphone to your PC and open the command line (Windows) or terminal (macOS/Linux).
- Enter the command to check the connection: adb devices must appear serial number of the device.
- Reboot the command: adb reboot
For forced reboot (similar to hard reboot) use:
adb reboot bootloaderAfter completing this command, the smartphone will go to fastboot mode, from where you can again choose the Reboot system.
β οΈ Attention: Teams ADB Misuse (e.g. adb reboot recovery command during an update) can lead to data loss or device buildup.
Method 5: Automatically Reboot on Schedule
Few people know, but MIUI has a built-in automatic reboot on schedule, which is useful for maintaining system stability without manual intervention, to configure:
- Open Settings β Additional β Reboot on schedule.
- Activate the Automatic Reboot Switch.
- Choose the frequency: daily, weekly or on specific days.
- Set a time (night hours are recommended when the phone is not in use).
Advantages of this method:
- β° Cache cleaning happens regularly without your involvement
- π Saves battery power by optimizing background processes
- π‘οΈ Reduces the risk of sudden hangings
| Reset frequency | Recommended time | The effect |
|---|---|---|
| Every day. | 03:00-05:00 | Maximum stability, minimum battery consumption |
| Once every 3 days | 02:00-04:00 | Balance between stability and autonomy |
| Weekly | Weekend, 04:00 | Minimal impact on work, but less effective |

Automatic reboot does not replace manual reboots if the smartphone is already getting stuck; it only works as a preventive measure.
What if Redmi 9 doesnβt reboot?
If none of these methods worked, the problem could be hardware.
| Symptoms. | Possible cause | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen, no response to buttons | Discharged battery or damaged power plume | Connect to charging for 30+ minutes, if it does not help β service center |
| Vibration when pressing buttons, but the screen does not turn on | Problems with the display or graphics chip | Try connecting to your TV via HDMI (if supported) |
| Cyclical reboot (bootloop) | Damaged firmware or update conflict | Flashing through Mi Flash Tool (requires PC) |
