Loading a Xiaomi smartphone into Recovery Menu mode instead of a regular system is a situation that many users face after a failed upgrade, reset or experiment with firmware. This engineering mode, while it looks frightening, is actually a powerful tool for restoring the device to health. However, the main problem is not knowing how to get out of it without making things worse.
In this article, we will look at all possible scenarios, from standard output with data storage to forced reboot when getting stuck. Particular attention will be paid to the Redmi Note 12, POCO X5 and Mi 11 models, where the recovery interface may differ, and you will also learn what actions in this menu can lead to complete data loss, and how to avoid them.
What is Recovery Menu on Xiaomi and Why You Need It
Recovery Menu (or Recovery Mode) is a separate micro OS built into Xiaomi Android smartphones that runs before the main system boots and allows you to:
- π Perform reset to factory settings (Wipe Data)
- π¦ Install official / custom firmware through ADB Sideload or Apply Update from SD
- π§ Fixing bootloader Errors After Failed Updates
- π‘οΈ Backup and Restore (not available on all models)
Newer devices (Xiaomi 13, Redmi Note 13 Pro+) use MIUI Recovery with touch control and support for Chinese/English. Older models (Redmi 4X, Mi A1) can have a text interface with control through volume buttons.
β οΈ Warning: Do not confirm "Wipe All Data" without backup! This option completely erases internal memory, including photos, contacts and installed applications. β½).
Method 1: Standard output with data storage
If your Xiaomi booted into the recave by accident (for example, after pressing the buttons when you turn off), use this method:
- In the recovery menu, select Reboot (or Reboot system now) using volume buttons.
- Confirm the choice of the power button.
- Wait for the standard system boot (can take up to 5 minutes).
On models with touch recovery (POCO F5, Xiaomi 12T), just tap on the Reboot β System.
Make sure that the battery charge is > 30%
Turn off the USB cable (if connected)
Check if the red error indicator is on.
Remember the current menu item in case of re-entry-->
If after the restart the phone again hits the Recovery, this indicates:
- π΄ Damaged firmware (requires flashing through Fastboot)
- π΄ Section error /data (Helping Wipe Cache)
- π΄ Hardware failure (memory or motherboard malfunction)
Method 2: Forced reboot when getting stuck
When the smartphone does not respond to pressing in the Recovery (hang on the Mi logo or flashes the screen), use hardware reset:
- Press the power button for 15-20 seconds before vibration.
- If it doesnβt work, press the Power + Volume combination up for 10 seconds.
- After turning off, wait 30 seconds and turn on the phone in the standard way.
β οΈ Note: On Redmi 10 and later, long-term button clamping can trigger Fastboot Mode instead of turning it off. In this case, select Reboot to System in the Fastboot menu.
If the phone turns on but returns to the Recovery, try:
An alternative method for persistent hanging
Method 3: Exit via Wipe Cache (without data loss)
If a system is loaded into a recavator after updating or installing applications, the cause may be a corrupted cache, and cleaning it is safe and often solves the problem:
- Select Wipe & Reset (or Wipe Cache Partition) from the recovery menu.
- Confirm the action (some models will require a password from Mi-account).
- After cleaning, select Reboot to System.
| Xiaomi model | The path to clearing the cache | Password required |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 11/12 | Wipe Data β Wipe Cache | No. |
| POCO X3/X4 | Advanced β Wipe Cache | Yes (if it was installed) |
| Mi 10/11 | Mount β Wipe Cache | No. |
| Redmi 9A/9C | Wipe β Wipe Cache Partition | No. |
Clearing the cache does not affect user data, but resets temporary application files. After rebooting, the first turn on can take up to 10 minutes.

Method 4: Recovery with the Mi Flash Tool (for experienced)
If standard methods don't work and the phone is constantly loading into the Recovery, you'll need to flash it over the Fastboot.
- π± Devices with damaged firmware (System destroyed)
- π± Phones after a failed rooting or unlocking the bootloader
- π± Models where resets don't solve the problem (Xiaomi 12 Pro, POCO F4 GT)
You'll need:
- π» Windows computer 10/11

Method 5: Use ADB-teams (for developers)
If you have access to ADB (Android Debug Bridge, you can get out of the back with the command line, and this method is useful when the touch control is not working, but it's not working. USB-debugging was included earlier.
Instructions:
- Connect your phone to your PC via USB.
- Open the command line (Win + R β cmd).
- Enter the commands in order: Adb devices adb shell reboot system
If the adb device command does not show your device:
- πΉ Make sure it's on. USB-debugging in the developer settings.
- πΉ Reinstall Xiaomi drivers ADB Interface.
- πΉ Try another one. USB-cable (not all cables support data transmission).
For models with a locked bootloader (Redmi Note 13, Xiaomi 14) you may need authorization through Mi-account:

reboot systemWhat to do if nothing helps
If all of these methods fail, the problem may be hardware.
- π The phone turns off immediately after the Mi logo appears.
- π₯ Heated body in the processor area.
- π Artifacts appear on the screen or there is no backlight.
- π΅ Mi Flash Tool (Device not found).
In such cases:
- Contact the Xiaomi service center (warranty repairs will cost 0-3000) β½).
- Check the battery status β bloated batteries can block the motherboard contacts.
- If the phone fell or got wet, you will need a diagnosis of the fee (cost from 2 000 USD). β½).
For devices older than 3 years (e.g. Redmi 5 Plus, Mi 8), repairs may not be cost-effective.
- π Purchase of used motherboard (from 1,500) β½ on Avito).
