Download Mode (or Fastboot Mode) on Xiaomi smartphones is a service interface for running a device through a computer. It is usually activated when you try to install custom software, unlock the bootloader or after an update crash. The problem is that sometimes the phone freezes in this mode without responding to standard buttons. If your Redmi, POCO or Mi shows a black screen labeled FASTBOOT and the rabbit logo in the header, do not panic. In 90% of cases, the situation can be fixed without going to the service center.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to exit Download Mode β from the elementary (button reboot) to advanced (ADB commands and flashing through the Mi Flash Tool). Particular attention will be paid to the unique nuances for models from 2023-2026, where Xiaomi changed the logic of the bootloader. If you are not a technician, start with the first section and consistently try methods until the problem is solved.
1. Simple reboot: button combinations
Half the time, the exit from Download Mode is a forced reboot, and the manufacturer has put in some hardware combinations that work even when the system freezes, and try them in order:
- π The classic way: press the power button for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes out.
- π For new models (Redmi Note) 12/13, POCO F5/X5): At the same time, squeeze the power. + Volume up on 8β10 Let go when the Mi logo appears.
- π Alternative combination: Nutrition + Reduce volume (hold until vibration) Suitable for Xiaomi 13/14 series.
If the phone does not respond to button retention, check:
- β‘ Battery charge: at levels below 5%, the hardware combinations may not work.
- π Cable and port: sometimes the cause of "hang" is damaged USB-cable (especially if Download mode is activated when you connect to your PC).
β οΈ Note: On models with an infrared port (for example, Redmi Note 11 Pro)+) Long-term button retention can accidentally activate the remote control. If the screen flashes, release the buttons and try again.
2.Exit via Recovery Mode (without loss of data)
If the hardware reboot doesn't work, the next step is to switch to Recovery Mode, which allows you to restart your phone normally or reset your settings (but we'll try to avoid the latter).
- Turn off the phone (hold power until the screen is turned off).
- Press Power + Volume Up and hold until the Mi logo appears.
- Release the buttons and you will see the Recovery menu (in English or Chinese).
- Use volume buttons for navigation and power to select Reboot β Reboot to System.
If the Recovery menu doesn't have Reboot to System, select Reboot (first line). On some firmware (HyperOS), the menu may look different - look for the option with the word System.
βοΈ Actions in Recovery Mode
β οΈ Note: On bootloader devices, selecting the Wipe Data item in Recovery will result in a complete memory cleanup. Don't press it unless you're ready to lose data!
If the phone returns to Download Mode after rebooting via Recovery, this indicates that the system files are damaged, in which case a firmware will be required (see section 5).
3.Use of ADB-Teams (for experienced users)
If you have access to a computer and you have ADB/Fastboot tools installed, you can try logging out of Download Mode software, which is suitable for models with an unlocked bootloader.
First, prepare the PC:
- Download and install Googleβs Platform Tools.
- Connect your phone to your computer via USB (use the original cable!).
- Open the command line (cmd) in the adb folder.
Enter the commands one by one:
adb devices(If the list is empty, follow:
adb kill-server
adb start-serverThen try again.
Next, enter:
fastboot rebootIf the team doesnβt work, try:
fastboot continueWhat if the ADB canβt see the device?
If the phone is still back in Download Mode after commands, it could mean:
- π§ The loader is damaged (reflashing is required).
- π Hardware problem (for example, failure of the power button).
4. Reset to factory settings (last chance without firmware)
If previous methods didn't work and the data on the phone wasn't critical, you can do a hard reset with Recovery, which will delete all user files, but will return the phone to working condition.
Instructions:
- Go to Recovery Mode (see Section 2).
- Select Wipe Data (or Wipe & Reset on new firmware).
- Confirm the action (usually you need to select Yes or enter a password if it has been set).
- After reset, select Reboot to System.
On models with HyperOS (for example, Xiaomi 14, Redmi K70) the path may be different:
- Select Advanced β Wipe Dalvik/ART Cache (this wonβt delete data, but it can sometimes help you get out of the download cycle).
- If it doesnβt work, go back and choose Wipe All Data.
β οΈ Attention: On devices with encryption (FBE β File-Based Encryption) may require you to enter the old password to decrypt the data after reset, and if you don't remember it, the data will be lost forever.
π‘
If after reset, the phone asks you to enter your Mi Account, but you do not remember it, use the official Mi Unlock tool (you will need a linked phone number or email).
5. flashing through the Mi Flash Tool (for advanced)
If none of these methods work, the last option is to completely reflash the Mi Flash Tool, which is a radical solution, but it's guaranteed to bring the phone back to life.
- π₯οΈ Windows computer (7/10/11).
- π Original. USB-cable (preferably from the set).
- π₯ Firmware for your model (you can download on the official website).
- π§ The Mi Flash Tool.
Step-by-step:
- Download and install the Mi Flash Tool.
- Unpack the archive with firmware (.tgz or.zip) in a folder without Cyrillic characters.
- Turn off your phone and press Power + Volume Down to log into Fastboot Mode.
- Connect the phone to the PC.
- In the Mi Flash Tool, click Select and specify the path to the firmware folder.
- Press Refresh β the program must detect the device.
- Select firmware mode: Clean All - complete cleanup (recommended for critical crashes); Clean All and Lock - cleanup + lock the bootloader (if it was unlocked); Save User Data - an attempt to save data (does not always work).
Flash
| Xiaomi model | Recommended firmware regime | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 10/11/12 | Clean All | On these models, Save User Data often results in cyclical loading. |
| POCO F3/F4/F5 | Clean All and Lock | If the bootloader has been unlocked, this mode will return it to its original state. |
| Xiaomi 13/14 series | Clean All | For HyperOS, be sure to use the firmware version of OS1.0 or later. |
| Redmi K50/K60 | Clean All | After the firmware, you may need to re-activate your Mi Account. |
β οΈ Note: Firmware via the Mi Flash Tool will reset all settings and delete data if you choose Clean All mode. Before the procedure, make sure you have backups of important files (if the phone has ever been turned on before).
π‘
If the phone does not turn on after firmware or reboots cyclically, repeat the procedure with another firmware version (for example, an older stable build).
6. Hardware malfunctions: when you need to service
If none of the software methods worked, the problem could be in the hardware, and here are the signs that the phone needs repair:
- π The phone does not respond to charging (even after holding the buttons).
- π USB-The port does not specify the connection to the PC (check on another cable and computer).
- π± The screen remains black when you manipulate the buttons.
- π₯ The phone overheats or makes uncharacteristic sounds (clicks, squeaks).
Typical hardware reasons for hanging in Download Mode:
- π Failure of the battery (swelling, short circuit).
- π Damage. USB-port (often after falls or moisture infestation).
- π± Memory chip dump (if the phone fell or was hit).
- π§ Failure of the power button (mechanical damage).
In these cases, self-repair is not recommended - contact the authorized service center Xiaomi. the average cost of diagnosis is 500-1000 rubles, repair (for example, replacement). USB-The port will cost 1500-3,000 rubles depending on the model.

Before visiting the service, take a picture of the IMEI phone (written on the box or under the battery) β this will speed up the process of identifying the device.
