Why does Xiaomi’s phone only boot in Safe Mode?
Safe Mode on Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO smartphones is a diagnostic mode that automatically disables all third-party applications and leaves only system services. Its main task is to help the user identify the cause of failures if the device is unstable. However, sometimes the phone can get stuck in this mode after a failed update, application conflict or even accidental button pressing.
If your Xiaomi screen at the bottom shows the words “Safe Mode” (or “Safe Mode”) and most applications are no longer available, don’t panic. 90% of the time, the problem is solved in 1-2 minutes without losing data, but it is important to understand what caused this mode: it could be a long pressing of the power button, a launcher failure, damage to system files or even virus software.
Before you start taking action, check:
- 🔋 Battery level (if less than 15%, connect charging).
- 📱 Physical damage (cracks on the screen, moisture ingestion).
- 🔄 Newly installed apps (they could have provoked conflict).
Method 1: Reboot your phone (works 80% of the time)
The simplest and most effective method is forced reboot, and in most cases, Safe Mode is turned on because of a temporary failure, and a normal restart returns the phone to normal mode.
Instructions:
- Press the power button for 10-15 seconds until the screen goes out.
- Wait 30 seconds (don’t turn on your phone right away!)
- Press the power button to turn the device on.
If after the reboot, the Safe Mode message has disappeared, the problem is solved. If not, move on to the next method.
Method 2: Disable Safe Mode through Notifications
On some Xiaomi models (for example, Redmi Note 10 Pro, POCO X3) in Safe Mode, a special notification appears that allows you to exit the mode with one tap.
How to do this:
- Pull the notification curtain down.
- Find the notification “Safe Mode is enabled”.
- Slip it on it and select "Switch off."
Make sure your phone is over 50% charged.
Make a backup copy of important data
Remember your Mi Account if you need to unlock it.
Check if the phone is connected to the PC (turn off the cable)-->
⚠️ Note: If there is no notification, do not try to search for it in the settings - on some firmware (MIUI 12/13) This method doesn't work. Go to the next one.
Method 3: Reset the launcher settings (if the desktop is to blame)
A common reason for the Safe Mode freeze is a launcher (the program responsible for the main screen) malfunction, which is true for users who have installed third-party launchers (Nova Launcher, Apex) or changed system themes.
Resetting instructions:
- Open “Settings” → “Applications” → “Application Management”.
- Find the Louncher app (or MIUI Launcher).
- Tap “Storage” → “Clear Data” and “Clear Cache”
- Reboot the phone.
| Xiaomi model | Probability of launcher failure | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Redmi Note 9/10 | High (frequent complaints about MIUI 12) | Resetting the launcher + firmware update |
| POCO F3/X3 | Medium (usually after customization) | Cache cleanup + launcher reinstallation |
| Mi 11/12 Series | Low (stable firmware) | Rebooting usually helps. |
⚠️ Warning: After clearing the launcher data, all widgets and icon locations on the home screen will be reset to factory settings. Take a picture of the current layout in advance if it's important.
Method 4: Remove the problem application
If Safe Mode was activated after installing a new app, the system could recognize it as potentially dangerous, in which case you need to manually remove the culprit.
How to find a problem application:
- Go to Settings → Applications → Application Management.
- Sort the list by installation date ("Last").
- Remove suspicious programs (especially if they have requested administrator rights).
Typical "culprits":
- 🎮 GameGuardian, Lucky Patcher).
- 🔓 Applications for unlocking the bootloader (Mi Unlock).
- 🛡️ Unofficial antiviruses (may conflict with the MIUI Security).
- 📱 Launchers and widgets from third-party developers.
💡
If you can’t identify a problem app, try to delete the last 3-5 installed programs, most often the fault is what was installed on the last day.
Method 5: Hard reset (if nothing worked)
If all previous methods have failed, the last option is factory reset, which is a radical solution that will remove all data from the phone, so use it only as a last resort.
Step-by-step:
- Turn off the phone.
- Press the Power button + Volume up for 10 seconds until the Mi logo appears.
- From the Recovery menu, select “Wipe Data” → “Wipe All Data”.
- Confirm the action and wait for the completion (5-10 minutes).
⚠️ Warning: After a hard reset, the phone will require you to enter your Mi Account details if you have previously activated Device Protection!

Frequent Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
Many users make the problem worse by trying to fix the phone in the wrong way, and this is what you can't do in Safe Mode:
- 🚫 Install new applications (this can increase the conflict).
- 🚫 Update the firmware through OTA (skulking»).
- 🚫 Format a memory card (data may be damaged).
- 🚫 Unloading the phone to zero (this will complicate the diagnosis).
Also not worth it:
- 🔧 Use programs like this. ADB Fastboot, if you are not an experienced user.
- 🔄 Try to flash your phone through Mi Flash without backup.
- 📱 Extract SIM-map SD-map.
💡
If the phone is stuck in Safe Mode after falling or getting moisture, the problem may be hardware. In this case, resetting will not help - contact the service center.
