Your Xiaomi stopped booting, got stuck on the Mi logo or does not respond to the power button at all? Don’t rush to carry it to the service center – in 80% of cases, the device can be brought back to life through Fastboot mode. This low-level tool allows you to reflash your smartphone even when the system is completely inoperable (“brick”), unlock the bootloader or fix errors after a failed update.
Unlike the standard Recovery mode, Fastboot works directly with the phone’s hardware, making it the only lifeline for devices with a damaged boot partition. However, the wrong actions here can finally kill the gadget — so we’ll go through every step from preparing the PC to the final restart. In this article, you’ll find the current commands for the Mi Flash Tool, ways to bypass anti-rollback errors, and tips on choosing the right firmware for your model.
What is Fastboot and When You Need It
Fastboot Mode is a diagnostic protocol built into most Android smartphones, including all Xiaomi models (from Redmi 4X to Xiaomi 14 Ultra).
- 🔧 Install official and custom firmware (MIUI, LineageOS and others.)
- 🔓 Unlock the bootloader for further manipulation
- 🛠️ Recover damaged parts of the system (for example, after a failure) OTA-update)
- 📱 Get out of the soft brick state (the device is switched on but not loaded further than the logo)
The difference between Fastboot and Recovery Mode is that the first one is at the hardware level and the second one is at the operating system level. If your Xiaomi doesn't boot even into Recovery, then Fastboot is the only way to reanimate it.
⚠️ Warning: If the phone has become a hard brick (no button response, no PC detection, no charging heat), then the Fastboot won't help.
Typical situations when you need a Fastboot:
- 📵 The phone is stuck on the logo. Mi/POCO and no longer load
- 🔄 After updating MIUI There is an anti-rollback error (prohibition of rollback on the old version)
- 🔒 You forgot your pattern lock or password, and Find My Device doesn’t help.
- 📲 The device is constantly restarted (bootloop)
Preparation for Recovery: What You Will Need
Before you start firmware, gather everything you need, and if you don't have one component, you can interrupt the process and make the problem worse.
Windows 10/11 PC (Mac/Linux not recommended due to driver issues)
Original. USB-cable (better from the phone set)
Charged phone (minimum 30%)
Mi Flash Tool (last version)
Official firmware for your model (in.tgz or.zip format)
Qualcomm/MTK drivers (depending on the phone’s processor)
Mi Account (if you need to unlock the bootloader)
-->
Pay special attention to the choice of firmware. For Xiaomi, there are three types of files:
| Type of firmware | Expansion | When to use | Does it require unlocking? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastboot | .tgz | For full flashing through the Mi Flash Tool | Yes. |
| Recovery | .zip | For updates through stock recovery | No. |
| OTA | .zip | To update "over the air" through settings | No. |
To recover via Fastboot, you need a file with the.tgz extension. You can download it on the official Xiaomi website (choose the Stable version, not the Developer, if you are not sure). Never use firmware from third sources - they can contain viruses or be assembled for another model!
Also check your phone’s CPU architecture (via Settings → About Phone → Full Specification). Qualcomm chips (like the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2) and MediaTek (like the Helio G99) use different drivers and versions of the Mi Flash Tool.
💡
If you can’t identify a phone model (for example, it doesn’t turn on), look at the sticker under the lid or on the box. The model usually starts with the letters: Redmi – RMX/2201, POCO – MZB, Xiaomi – 2210/2301, etc.
How to enter Fastboot mode on Xiaomi
If the phone has any response to the buttons, you can log in to the Fastboot hardware. There are two proven ways:
Method 1: Through a combination of buttons
- Turn off the phone (if it freezes, press the power button for 10-15 seconds).
- Press the Power button + Volume down at the same time.
- Hold for 5-10 seconds until the image of a hare in a hat-eared hat (Fastboot logo) appears.
Method 2: Through ADB (if the phone is switched on)
If the device boots but is not running smoothly, you can go to Fastboot via ADB:
- Enable USB Debugging in Settings → About Phone → MIUI version (click 7 times, then go back to Additional Settings → For Developers).
- Connect your phone to your PC and execute the command in the terminal: adb reboot bootloader
If the phone screen is black, but the PC makes the device’s connection sound, check:
- 🔌 Cable (Try another, original cable)
- 🔋 Battery Charge (Plug in to Charge for 10 Minutes)
- 🖥️ Port port USB (use USB 2.0 on the back of the PC)
⚠️ Note: On some models (POCO F5, Redmi Note 12 Pro+) The combination of buttons may differ. For example, to log into the Fastboot requires you to clamp the power supply. + Loudness up, and for Recovery - Nutrition + Volume down. Specify for your model!
Unlocking the bootloader (Bootloader)
Most Xiaomi smartphones come with a bootloader locked, which means you can’t flash the device through the Fastboot until you unlock it, which takes 3 to 7 days (due to Xiaomi’s security policy) and requires:
- 📱 Mi Account tied to phone
- 🌐 Stable Internet connection on PC
- 🔐 Mi Unlock Tool (download from the official website)
Step-by-step:
- Download and install Mi Unlock Tool on PC.
- Log in to Fastboot on your phone and connect it to your computer.
- Launch the Mi Unlock Tool and log in to the same Mi Account as your phone.
- Press Unlock, the program will start checking. If the phone is new (linked to the account for less than 7 days), a waiting message will appear.
- Wait for the specified time (usually 168 hours), then try again.
Once you successfully unlock, you'll see a message called Unlocked successfully. You can now flash your phone. Importantly, unlocking resets all the data on the device!
What if the Mi Unlock Tool can't see the phone?
Xiaomi’s firmware with Mi Flash Tool
When the bootloader is unlocked, you can start the firmware. We will use the official Mi Flash Tool utility, which supports all Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO models.
Step 1: Installation of drivers
Without the right drivers, your PC won't see your phone in Fastboot mode.
- For Qualcomm: QDLoader HS-USB Driver
- For MediaTek: MTK USB Driver
Install them through Device Manager (update the driver for the device with an exclamation mark).
Step 2: Set up the Mi Flash Tool
- Download and unpack the Mi Flash Tool (last version 20230401 or later).
- Unpack the downloaded firmware.tgz in a folder without Cyrillic characters (for example, C:\MIUI\proshivka).
- Run MiFlash.exe on behalf of the administrator.
- Click Select and point the way to the folder with unpacked firmware.
Step 3: Firmware
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode to your PC.
- In the Mi Flash Tool, press Refresh – a device (e.g., COM4) should appear.
- Select firmware method: Clean all - full reset (recommended for "brick") Clean all and lock - reset + lock bootloader (for sale of the phone) Save user data - data storage (not always stable)
Flash
When completed, the phone will automatically restart. The first launch can take up to 10 minutes - don't turn it off!
💡
If the phone stayed on the logo for more than 20 minutes after firmware, repeat the process with the choice of Clean all.
Common mistakes and their solutions
Even with the correct following of the instructions, errors can occur, and we have collected the most common of them and ways to correct them:
| Mistake. | Reason. | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Anti-rollback check fail | Trying to flash the old version of MIUI after the new one | Download the firmware of the same or newer version |
| Flash not done. Device not found | PC doesn't see phone (driver or cable problem) | Check the connection, reinstall the drivers, try a different USB port |
| Invalid image format | A damaged firmware file or incorrect folder | Download the firmware, unpack it again. |
| Device is locked | The bootloader is not unlocked | Unlock the device through the Mi Unlock Tool (see section above) |
If the phone does not turn on after firmware or gives an error MIUI version cannot be installed on this device, which means you downloaded firmware for another model. Always check the file name - it should contain the code of your device (for example, the name of the file, ingres_global_images_... For the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G).
Another common problem is the endless bootloop.
- 🔄 Conflict between versions MIUI (For example, the firmware Global on the phone with China ROM)
- 🗃️ Damaged data or cache partitions
- 🔧 Wrongly selected firmware method in Mi Flash Tool
Solution: Flick the phone again with a full reset (Clean all) and wait for the first download for at least 15 minutes.
Alternative Recovery Methods
If the Mi Flash Tool doesn’t help or gives you errors, try alternative methods:
1. Through EDL-regimen (9008)
EDL (Emergency Download Mode) allows you to flash your phone even if the Fastboot is not available.
- Download firmware in.mbn format (for example, from the 4PDA forum).
- Install the Qualcomm HS-USB QDLoader 9008 driver.
- Connect the phone to the PC by clamping Volume up + Volume down (on some models you need to close the test points on the board).
- Use the Mi Flash Tool or QFil.
⚠️ Attention: Entrance EDL On new models (Xiaomi 13, Redmi Note 12) it is often required to log in via Mi Account.
2.Through Custom Recovery (TWRP)
If the bootloader is unlocked, you can install TWRP and flash.zip firmware:
- Download TWRP for your model from the official website.
- In Fastboot mode, execute the command: fastboot flash recovery twrp.img fastboot boot twrp.img
- In TWRP, run the firmware.zip through Install.
This method is suitable for custom firmware installation (like LineageOS or Pixel Experience), but requires experience.
3. Through the service center
If all attempts of self-recovery failed, contact the service. Official centers Xiaomi in Russia and the CIS charge for unlocking and firmware from 1,500 to 3,000 rubles (depending on the model). Unofficial workshops can do it cheaper, but the risk of running into unqualified specialists is higher.
💡
Before visiting the service, back up your IMEI (if the phone is switched on at all) and enter the dial code ##4636## and save the information from the IMEI section.
