When you find an empty phone book after Hard Reset or flashing it, it is familiar to many Xiaomi smartphone users. Panic at such moments is a natural reaction, because losing numbers can mean breaking important business or personal connections. However, the MIUI operating system and the Android ecosystem provide several reliable mechanisms for returning lost information if you have previously taken care of backup or synchronization.
Data recovery is possible both through Google’s cloud services and through Xiaomi’s own account, which is often activated on the device by default. There is also the option to return a subscriber list from a local file if you previously exported it manually to a memory card or computer. Below we will discuss in detail each of the available ways so you can choose the most suitable for your case.
Verify and activate Google Contact Sync
The most common Android smartphone scenario involves automatically saving numbers to your Google account, and after resetting to the factory settings, when you first set up your system, you were asked to enter your Gmail login and password, and if you agreed to sync, your data is already on the company's servers and is waiting to be downloaded.
To start the process, you need to go to your device settings. Find Accounts and Sync or just Google in the settings menu. Make sure you logged in to the exact account that was used on your phone before the reset. Sometimes users have multiple mailboxes and may accidentally choose the wrong one.
Inside the Google account menu, find Account Sync. The service list that opens must have Contacts. Make sure the switch in front of it is activated. If the slider is already on, try turning it off and on again to force the server to communicate.
⚠️ Attention: Successful synchronization requires a stable connection to the Wi-Fi network. When using mobile Internet, the process may not start if the settings are limited to transferring large amounts of data.
Once sync is activated, open the standard Contacts or Phone app. Within minutes, depending on the number of numbers saved, the list will start to replenish. If you have a few thousand records saved, the process can take up to 15-20 minutes.
💡
If contacts don’t show up after 30 minutes, try logging into your Google account via your browser on your computer at contacts.google.com to make sure that a backup exists there.
It's important to understand that synchronization works two-way, which means that any changes made to the server will affect the phone, and vice versa, which is why it's the most reliable method for long-term storage of a phone book.
Using Mi Cloud Cloud Storage
Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphone owners often neglect to create a Mi Account, considering it unnecessary, but it is the key to restoring data to the brand ecosystem. If you logged into your Mi Account before resetting and allowed synchronization, your contacts could be saved in the manufacturer’s cloud.
To check, open the Security app or go to Settings -> Mi Account. Log in using your credentials. From the account menu, select the Cloud or Mi Cloud section, which displays the synchronization status of different data types.
- 📱 Click on the Contacts icon to see the date of the last sync.
- 🔄 If the Restore button is displayed, click on it to upload data to the device.
- ⚙️ Make sure the Synchronization switch is in the active position.
The Mi Cloud feature is that it allows you to manage contacts not only from your phone, but also through the web interface. Go to i.mi.com from your computer, enter your login and password. In the Contacts section, you can see the entire list of saved numbers. From there you can export them in.vcf format for subsequent import.
What to do if you forget your Mi Account password?
It is worth noting that free space in the Mi Cloud is limited to 5 GB. If you store a lot of photos and videos, the space for contacts may run out, although text data takes up a negligible amount.
Recovery from local MIUI backup
The MIUI Operating Shell has a built-in local backup feature that users often ignore. If you or the system automatically backed up before resetting, the data file may be in internal memory or on a microSD card.
Local backups are usually stored in the MIUI/backup/AllBackup path, and inside the folder you will find directories with copies created, and if the folder is empty or missing, then automatic backup has been disabled, and this method, unfortunately, will not help.
☑️ Checking for local backup availability
To recover, go to Settings -> About -> Reservation and Restore. Select the Mobile Device or Restore tab. The system will suggest selecting the available restore point. Select the desired date and tick the "Contacts" box.
⚠️ Attention: The recovery process from local copy can take a considerable time.Do not interrupt your phone or open other applications to avoid data recording errors.
If the standard way through settings does not work, you can try to find the backup file through the file manager and run it manually, but the regular MIUI mechanism is preferable, since it ensures the correct integration of records into the phone book database.
Import contacts from a file.vcf or.csv
The most versatile way to recover is to manually import a file..vcf (vCard) is the standard for sharing contact information and is supported by all smartphones, a file you could save to your computer, send yourself an email or save to your messenger.
If the file is on your computer, transfer it to your phone via USB-cable, Bluetooth or upload to any cloud storage (Google Drive, Yandex.Disk). After the file is in the memory of the smartphone, open the application Contacts».
In the application menu (usually three dots or bars in the corner), find Import/Export contacts or Contact Management. Select Import from file.vcf. The system will prompt you to select a file through the file manager. Once the path is indicated, the process of adding records will begin.
It's important to know where the numbers are going to be saved, and when you import, you'll ask if you want to save the data to your phone, to your Google account, or to your phone. SIM-For maximum security, choose a Google account, as this will ensure automatic sync in the future.
If you have a file in.csv format (like an upload from an old Nokia or another phone), it must first be converted to.vcf or downloaded via Google Contacts web interface on your computer, from where it syncs with the phone.
Return of numbers from SIM-map
Many users still keep their contacts directly on the SIM-It's an old but reliable method that allows you to easily transfer numbers between devices by simply rearranging the Sym. SIM-The card is limited and does not allow you to save additional data, such as a photo or multiple numbers for a single subscriber.
To import data, insert SIM-Map to Xiaomi smartphone. Open the Contact app and go to the settings or management menu. Find Import Contacts and select the source SIM-map.
The system will display a list of all the numbers stored on the chip, so you can select individual records or mark them all at once, and once you confirm the selection, the contacts will be copied to the phone's internal memory or to the selected account.
| Parameter | SIM-map | Google account | Phone memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limit of records | Limited (usually 250) | No restrictions. | Depends on free memory. |
| Photo preservation | No. | Yes. | Yes. |
| Several rooms. | No (usually 1 in name) | Yes. | Yes. |
| Risk of loss | High (if card is lost) | Minimum | Medium (on discharge) |
After copying, it is recommended to remove duplicates, since when importing from the SIM-Cards often have situations where the same number is stored under different names or in different recording formats.
Solving problems and removing duplicates
After recovering data from different sources (e.g., part from Google, part from SIM) you may have the problem of duplicate records. The same person can show up twice or three times in the phone book. MIUI has a built-in tool to address this problem.
Open the Contacts app, click on the menu, and select Tools or Settings. Find the Repeated Contacts Unit function. The system will automatically analyze the database, find matches by phone number or name, and suggest combining them into a single card.
💡
Regular cleaning of the phone book from duplicates not only improves the visual appearance of the list, but also speeds up the search and dialing.
It's also worth checking if all numbers are correctly identified, and sometimes when importing from old files, numbers can be written without a country code or with extra characters, in which case you will have to edit them manually or use third-party applications for batch editing.
If the recovery is successful, remember to create a fresh backup immediately to protect yourself from similar situations in the future.
