A situation where the owner of a smartphone suddenly forgets a pattern lock or digital key PIN-The code, which is one of the world's most stressful mobile technologies, is turning the lock screen into an insurmountable barrier that cuts off access to contacts, photos and banking apps. Xiaomi, Redmi and Poco device owners face this issue especially often due to aggressive security policies. MIUI HyperOS.
Unfortunately, modern encryption standards on Android do not allow you to simply “hack” or “learn” a forgotten password, bypassing the security system. The security policy of Google and Xiaomi is designed in such a way that user data is secure from unauthorized access. So when we talk about restoring access, 99% of the time we are talking about a complete reset of the device before factory settings.
But there are nuances: If you have Mi Cloud and Find Device enabled on your device, you can sometimes unlock the screen without losing data, although this method does not work on all versions of the firmware. Otherwise, you will have to sacrifice files to regain control of the gadget. Below we will look at all the current methods, from the most gentle to the radical.
Before you start taking action, you need to be clear about which lock you are facing, whether it’s a standard lock screen, a Mi Account account, or a Google account that requires confirmation after a reset, and identifying the type of lock is the first and most important step that will determine the next recovery strategy.
Using the “Find Device” feature from Xiaomi
The most civilized way to avoid personal data loss is through the Mi Account ecosystem. If you have previously linked your phone to your Xiaomi account and enabled geolocation, you have the chance to remotely control your device, and you need to go to the official cloud.mi.com website from any other device (computer or smartphone).
Sign in using the same login and password as the locked phone, if the system successfully identifies your device, the map will show its location, and the control menu should find the option “Unlock”, but here lies an important nuance: this feature works stably only on older versions of the MIUI shell.
⚠️ Note: On modern versions of firmware (MIUI 12, 13, 14 and HyperOS) Remote screen unlock feature often forcibly resets all device data for security purposes, even if you’re just trying to unlock the lock.
If you're lucky enough to have the feature work without being reset, the phone will unlock, and you can set a new password, otherwise the system will prompt you to clean it up. This is not a mistake, but a security mechanism against theft. If the phone is stolen, an attacker will not be able to access the data even if they know the password from the Mi Account, without physical access to the device to confirm.
Resetting with Recovery Mode (Hard Reset)
The most common and reliable method, which works 100% of the time, regardless of the Android version or smartphone model (Redmi Note, Poco F, Xiaomi Mi). This method requires physical interaction with the device buttons and leads to the complete removal of all user data. Before starting the procedure, make sure that the battery charge is at least 30-40% so that the phone does not turn off at a critical moment.
To enter recovery mode, you need to turn off your smartphone completely. Then press the key combination: usually the Volume Up button and the Power button. Hold them simultaneously until the Mi or Poco logo appears, after which the power button can be released, continuing to hold the volume until the Recovery Mode menu appears.
Navigation in this menu is done with volume buttons (up/down), and the choice is confirmed by the power button. You need to find the Wipe Data item and select it. Then the system can request confirmation by selecting Wipe All Data. After the cleaning process is completed, select Reboot to restart.
☑️ Checklist before Hard Reset
Once rebooted, the phone will look like you just bought it in a store, all photos, contacts and apps will be deleted, but if you backed up to Google Photos or Mi Cloud, you can recover most of the information when you reset it.
Delete your password through Google Find My Device
Alternatively, using the tools of Android itself, if you have the Internet activated and geolocation enabled on your locked phone, you can use Google Find My Device. Go to android.com/find and log in to the Google account that is the main one on your smartphone.
The service will find your device and offer three actions: play the audio, lock the device or erase the data. We are interested in the option "Erase Device" (Erase Device), clicking on it, you will send a command to the phone, which will force reset all settings and delete the password of the lock screen.
This method is similar to Hard Reset via Recovery, but it is performed remotely. It is especially useful if the volume buttons on your Xiaomi are faulty or crashing. However, as in the previous case, data storage is impossible.
What if the service doesn’t see the phone?
Comparison of Xiaomi Unlocking Methods
To make it easier for you to choose the right option, we have systematized the basic methods into a table, each method has its advantages and disadvantages, depending on the specific situation and condition of the device.
| Method | Data retention | We need the Internet. | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mi Cloud (remotely) | Maybe (on old MIUIs) | Yes. | Low. |
| Recovery Mode | No (full reset) | No. | Medium |
| Google Find Device | No (full reset) | Yes. | Low. |
| Service centre | Depends on the situation. | Don't. | High (price) |
As you can see from the table, Recovery Mode is the most versatile solution that does not require access to the network, but guarantees file loss. Using cloud services is preferable only if you do not have important data on the device or they are already synchronized.
The problem of FRP Lock and Google account
After successfully resetting your password with any of the above methods, you may be in for an unpleasant surprise: When you first download, the system will require you to enter a password from a Google account that was previously synced with your phone, this works FRP (Factory Reset Protection).
This security measure is designed to prevent a stolen phone from being reflashed and sold, and if you don't remember your Google account password, the phone will turn into a brick, and you can only restore access through the process of restoring a Google account on another device.
⚠️ Warning: If you buy a used Xiaomi phone and see the Google activation screen after you turn on, it's a sign that the previous owner hasn't logged out.
In some cases, especially on older versions of Android, there were bypasses for FRP, but Google quickly closes these vulnerabilities. On modern Xiaomi with Android 11, 12, 13 and 14, it is almost impossible to bypass FRP without knowing the password with software methods.
💡
Save screenshots or write down logins and passwords from major accounts immediately after you buy your phone, which will save you hours of nerves in the event of a reset.
Specificity of unlocking different models Xiaomi
While the algorithm is the same for the entire ecosystem, there are slight differences depending on the model. For example, on the Redmi Note series, logging into Recovery sometimes requires a charger to be connected because the system fears battery discharge during the process.
Poco series devices often have more aggressive bootloader protection. If you plan to avoid such problems in the future, you can consider unlocking the bootloader (Unlock Bootloader) and installing custom recavers, such as TWRP. This will allow you to make full backups of the system (Nandroid Backup) and restore them in the case of a forgotten password.
However, unlocking the bootloader on modern Xiaomi phones is a complex process that requires waiting 7 to 30 days and having a Mi Account with a certain level of trust.
💡
Unlocking the bootloader gives you full control over the device, but voids the warranty and makes it harder to use banking applications.
