A Xiaomi account (or Mi Account) is not just a profile to sync data, but the key to complete control of the device. Without it, you can't activate certain features, update your firmware, or even unlock your phone after a reset. But what if you forget which account is linked to your Redmi, POCO, or another brand gadget? Or you bought a device with your hands and want to check if it has someone else's data?
In this article, we will look at all the official and alternative ways to recognize a Xiaomi account, from browsing in settings to using service codes and third-party tools. We will focus on situations when the phone is locked, as well as the risks associated with buying used devices. If you need to not only recognize an account, but also delete it without a password, at the end of this article you will find links to detailed instructions for unlocking.
1. Verify Xiaomi account through phone settings
The easiest way to do this is to look at your linked account directly from the device menu, which works if your phone is unlocked and you have access to the basic settings.
- Open the Settings app (the gear icon on the home screen).
- Scroll down and select Accounts and Sync (on some firmware, Mi Accounts or Accounts).
- Click on the Mi Account bar β here will be displayed email or phone number associated with the device.
If there is no Mi Account section, try an alternative path:
- π± Settings β The phone. β All parameters. β Mi Account
- π In some models (POCO X3, Redmi Note 10 may be different: Settings β Memory. β Mi Cloud
π‘
If the settings show a blank screen or sync error, it could mean that the account is not tied or the device was reset incorrectly.
Important: If this section lists someone elseβs email (e.g. example@163.com), it means that the phone was purchased from hand and the previous owner did not untie his account, in which case you need to contact the seller to remove the link, otherwise you will not be able to use some features (e.g. Mi Cloud or Find Device).
2 How to find out Xiaomi account through Mi Cloud
If the phone is unlocked, but you're not sure which account is attached to it, you can check it through the web version of Mi Cloud, which is also suitable for cases where the device is lost or stolen - as long as it is connected to the Internet.
Instructions:
- Go to the official i.mi.com website (use a browser on your computer or other phone).
- Enter your Xiaomi account details (if you forgot your password, use the recovery function).
- After authorization, go to Devices or Find Device.
- In the list of connected gadgets, find your device - next to it will be indicated the tied account.
If your phone is not on the list, it could mean:
- π« The device is not tied to your account (maybe someone elseβs profile is being used).
- π΅ Phone is offline or Find Device is off in settings.
- π Synchronization failure occurred (try restarting the device).
3. Use of service codes to verify an account
Xiaomi devices have hidden service codes that allow you to get information about the system, including account data, which does not work on all models, but can be useful if standard methods do not help.
Here are the two most effective codes:
- π’ ##4636## β opens the testing menu, where in the section Account Information can be displayed email.
- π’ ##7780## - Some firmware shows the associated profile data (caution: this code can also reset settings!).
Warning: using service codes on a locked phone wonβt help β they only work when unlocked. In addition, on new models (Xiaomi 13, Redmi Note 12), these codes can be disabled by the manufacturer.
What if the code doesn't work?
4. Check account on blocked Xiaomi phone
If the device is locked because of a forgotten password or after a reset requires the entry of Mi Account data, the standard methods will not work.
- The official way: use the retrieval function on account.xiaomi.com. You will need an email or phone number associated with the account, as well as access to a backup mail or SMS.
- Alternative method: use Fastboot or EDL-Resetting the account (see section 6 for more details) is a risky way to do so and can result in a lockdown. IMEI loss of warranty.
The lock screen usually displays the email or phone number to which the account is linked. If this information is not available, try the following steps:
- π Restart your phone and see if a hint appears with your email when you turn on.
- π Try entering random characters in the password field β sometimes the system prompts the first letter of the email.
- π If the phone is bought with hands, contact the seller and ask for data to unlock.
Make sure itβs your account (check the on-screen email)
Try to recover your password through account.xiaomi.com
Contact the previous owner (if the device is used)
Use the official Xiaomi service center (if you have a check)
-->
Note: If you bought a phone with your hands and canβt contact the seller, donβt try to reset your account yourself.Beginning in 2021, Xiaomi has tightened its security policy β after unauthorized account deletion, the device can be permanently blocked (called Hard Brick).
5. Viewing account data via ADB (for advanced users)
If you have access to an unlocked phone but standard methods don't show an account, you can use Android Debug Bridge (ADB), which requires connecting the phone to a computer and basic command line knowledge.
Instructions:
- Turn on the developer mode on the phone (go to Settings β About phone and 7 times click on the MIUI version).
- Activate Debugging by USB in the Developer Menu.
- Connect the phone to your PC, install ADB drivers and execute the command: adb shell dumpsys account In the conclusion, find the line with com.xiaomi - here will be the email account.
Alternative command for new MIUI versions:
adb shell content query --uri content://com.xiaomi.account.provider.accountsIf the commands are not working, it is possible that the manufacturer has restricted access to account data through ADB. In this case, only the official method of recovery through Mi Cloud remains.
π‘
Use of the ADB β It's the only way to see a Xiaomi account without access to settings, but it requires an unlocked phone and a computer. ADB won't help.
6. Risks of buying used Xiaomi devices with someone elseβs account
One of the most common problems when buying Xiaomi, Redmi or POCO from hand is a tied account, and even if the seller claims to have made a reset, the Mi Account can remain in the system, which will lead to the following consequences:
| Problem. | Effects of consequences | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Post-discharge locking | Phone requires the entry of old account data | Contact the seller or contact the service |
| Limitation of functions | Mi Cloud, Find Device, Updates | Delete your account through settings (if you know the password) |
| Deleting an account without consent | IMEI blocking, loss of warranty | Don't try to throw it off yourself! |
| Alien account on Mi Home | Smart devices (lamps, robot vacuum cleaners) are controlled by the previous owner | Reset the smart device to factory settings |
Note: Since 2022, Xiaomi has implemented Mi Account Lock, which links the account to the deviceβs hardware ID, meaning that even after being reset via Fastboot or EDL, the phone may remain locked if you donβt delete the account correctly.
To avoid problems when buying a used device:
- π Ask the seller to provide a check or warranty card.
- π Check your phone on your linked account right at the meeting (via Settings) β Mi Account).
- π± Ask the seller to delete the account with you (path: Settings) β Mi Account β Get out).
- π After purchase, immediately reset to factory settings.
