Linking to a Mi Account is a prerequisite for full-time Xiaomi smartphone use, but users sometimes need to uninstall it, which may be due to selling the device, switching to another account or login issues, but the deletion process has nuances: wrong actions can lead to locking the phone or losing access to features like Find Device.
In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to delete Mi accounts from Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO devices, from standard disconnection through settings to bypassing protection after reset. Particular attention will be paid to situations where the password is lost or the device is blocked. All instructions are checked on MIUI 14/15 firmware and are relevant for models from 2020 to 2026.
Why you canβt just delete your Mi Account through your settings
Many users try to delete their account through Settings β Accounts β Mi Account, but they encounter errors, as Xiaomi uses layered protection:
- π Device Linking: The Account is associated with IMEI The phone can be blocked after it is dropped.
- π± Find Device: Even after logging out, the device remains on the list of associated devices.
- β οΈ Protection against theft: When you try to remove from a non-original firmware, a lock is triggered.
Moreover, on devices with MIUI 12+, when deleting an account through settings, the system may require you to enter a password even if you are logged in, due to Xiaomiβs security policy, which requires proof of identity in critical actions.
Method 1: Standard Deletion through Settings (if you know the password)
If you have access to a password and your device is not locked, use this method. It's the most secure and doesn't require resetting.
- Open Settings β Accounts and Sync β Mi Account.
- Slip the account icon (your name or email).
- Select Account Management (browser will open).
- Scroll down and click Delete Account.
- Confirm the action with a password and code from SMS (if requested).
β οΈ Note: After removal, you will lose access to:
- π Cloud Backups (Mi Cloud).
- π΅ Shopping in the Mi Store (apps, movies).
- π Find Device (phone search).
βοΈ Preparing for deletion of Mi Account
If the Delete account button is inactive or there is an error "Can not delete the account", try:
- Update MIUI to the latest version.
- Disable VPN (it can block access to Xiaomi servers).
- Try to delete your account through the web version of your Mi Account.
Method 2: Remove by resetting settings (if the phone is working)
If the standard method didnβt work, you can try resetting the device to factory settings with pre-disabling your account, which is suitable for devices running MIUI 13-15.
Important: After resetting without detachment of the account, the phone may require entering a login / password at the first setting (the so-called "Mi Account Lock").
- Go to Settings β About the phone β Reset settings.
- Choose to erase all data.
- Enter the password from the Mi Account (if requested).
- Confirm the reset.
| Model of the device | Is a password required when resetting | Is circumvention possible? |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 13/14, Redmi Note 12 | Yes (if the account is tied) | Only through the official unlocker |
| POCO F5, Redmi 10 | Yes (on MIUI 14+) | Possibly through EDL-mode (risk of brick) |
| Xiaomi Mi 11 and older | No (if the account is untied) | Not required |
β οΈ Attention: On devices with MIUI 14+ After the reset, you may see a message saying, "This device is associated with the Mi Account," which requires you to enter the account that was linked last.
Method 3: Delete Mi Account after Reset (if you forgot your password)
If you reset your phone and now it requires Mi Account details that you donβt remember, there are a few options:
Option A: Restoring access to the account
The most legal way is to restore access to your linked account:
- Go to the entrance page.
- Press Forgot Your Password?
- Enter the email or phone attached to your account.
- Confirm the recovery via SMS or backup email.
If you do not have access to your email/phone:
- π§ Try to restore email access through support (e.g. Gmail or Mail.ru).
- π Contact the operator to restore the number (if the phone was tied).
Option B: Bypassing the official unlocker (for confirmed owners)
Xiaomi provides an official unlock tool, but it requires proof of ownership:
- Download the Mi Unlock Tool.
- Sign in to another Mi Account (not one that is blocked!).
- Connect your phone in Fastboot mode (clip Power + Volume down).
- Follow the instructions (it may take 72-720 hours to wait!).
What if the Mi Unlock Tool canβt see the device?
β οΈ Note: Use of informal unlocking methods (such as: EDL Deep Flash Cable can lead to:
- π« Loss of warranty.
- π₯ "Brik" device (complete inoperability).
- π Blocking IMEI Xiaomi.
Method 4: Remove via Fastboot and EDL modes (for advanced)
These techniques require technical skills and are only suitable if other methods have not worked. We do not recommend them for beginners!
Method 1: Through Fastboot (for unlocked bootloader)
If the bootloader was previously unlocked on the device, you can flash the modified firmware without being tied to the account:
fastboot flash anti anti_4.img
fastboot erase frpWhere anti_4.img β circumvention FRP (file-storage).
Method 2: Through EDL (For power users only!)
EDL (Emergency Download Mode) allows you to flash the device at a low level, but requires:
- π§ Authorized Xiaomi account for developers.
- π₯οΈ Special cable (Deep Flash Cable) or lintels on the board.
- π¦ Firmware in.mbn format.
β οΈ Attention: Incorrect actions in EDL This method should only be used if you understand the risks and have experience with Qualcomm devices.
π‘
Before using EDL, check your deviceβs CPU model through the CPU-Z application. Snapdragon and Mediatek firmware are incompatible!
What to do if nothing helps: Support
If all of these methods fail, you can contact Xiaomiβs official support.
- Prepare proof of purchase (check, box with IMEI).
- Write to the support chat on the official website.
- Describe the situation and provide:
The timeframe for processing the request is 3 to 14 days, and in most cases, support helps unlock the device if you can prove ownership.
If the phone was purchased by hand, try contacting the previous owner and asking them to:
- π± Delete your device from your Mi Account via Mi Cloud.
- π Provide temporary access to the account for detachment.
π‘
Official support is the only legal way to unlock if you have forgotten your account details and donβt want to risk your device.
