Owning a Xiaomi smartphone involves actively using an ecosystem of services, where accounts are central. Often users face the need to untie the device from old profiles before selling, transferring the gadget to relatives or simply for the sake of digital hygiene. The deactivation process seems simple, but in the environment of MIUI and Android, there are hidden nuances that can lead to the locking of the device.
Incorrect deletion of data can activate FRP (Factory Reset Protection) security mechanisms, turning the phone into a “brick” for a new owner. It is important to understand the difference between a normal logout and a complete deletion of an account with a connection to the device. In this article, we will discuss in detail all the steps from standard settings to complex cases of restoration of access.
Before you start any action, make sure you understand the consequences: Deleting a Google account erases synchronized contacts, calendars and notes from the device if they are not stored separately. Similarly, Mi Account, which manages phone search and cloud storage, prepare for the process in advance to avoid losing valuable information.
Device preparation and data backup
The first and most critical step is to save personal information, and deleting an account is not just about logging out of an app, it's about breaking the connection between your phone and the cloud servers, and if you just delete the profile, all the local data that didn't sync up will be permanently lost, especially recent photos and new contacts.
It is recommended to manually check the sync status in the settings. Go to the account management section and make sure that the sliders opposite the important items (Contacts, Messages, Gallery) are active and lit green.
⚠️ Note: If you plan to sell a phone, simply deleting your account is not enough.Be sure to perform a full reset to factory settings (Wipe Data) only after untying all profiles so that the new owner does not encounter a request for the password of the previous owner.
For reliability, copy important files to your computer or external drive through USB-Use the File Manager Explorer to transfer folders DCIM, Download and Documents. This will create a physical copy of the data, independent of the state of cloud services Xiaomi Cloud or Google Drive.
Deleting Google account on Xiaomi
Google’s account is fundamental to Android, and its deletion shuts down the Play Market store, Gmail and other services, and is done through a system settings menu that may vary slightly depending on the version of the MIUI shell.
Open the Settings menu and find the Accounts and Syncs section (some versions simply call it Users and Accounts). In the list, you will see all the associated profiles. Click on the Google email address you want to delete. You will see a control menu where you need to select the "More" button (three dots) or immediately see the "Delete Account" option.
☑️ Checking before deleting Google
The system will request confirmation of action, warning that all associated data will be deleted from the device, which is standard security procedure, and once confirmed, the profile will disappear from the list, and applications that depend on it will cease to function or require re-authorization.
It is important to note that deleting your phone account does not permanently delete your Google account, it remains active on the company’s servers and you can log in from any other device, and if your goal is to completely destroy the digital footprint, you must delete your profile through your browser on the Google site.
Unbundling Mi Account and Cloud Services
Mi Account is a key to Xiaomi's ecosystem, and it's used to run Find Device, synchronize topics, notes and voice recorders, and deleting this profile requires you to enter a password, because the system needs to make sure that the owner really wants to untie the hardware from the server.
Go to Settings → Mi Account (usually at the top of the list). Scroll down to the bottom and select the "Out" option. The system will warn you of the consequences: disable sync and lock when reset. Enter your Mi ID password. If your password is forgotten, you will have to interrupt the process and use the recovery procedure through the site.
What is Find Device and why turn it off?
Once you're successful, make sure that the "Find Device" status is "Switched Off." If you delete your account but the function is still active, you'll see an activation error when you flash it back. In modern versions of MIUI, logging out automatically deactivates that protection.
Some users experience a situation where the system says, "Can't delete your account," which can occur when the Internet connection is unstable, or if the Xiaomi servers are running maintenance, in which case you can switch from Wi-Fi to mobile Internet or repeat the procedure later.
Working with other types of accounts
In addition to the main profiles, social media accounts, email services (Yahoo, Outlook) and instant messengers can be registered on the smartphone, and although they do not block the device when reset, their removal is necessary to protect privacy.
The process is similar to deleting a Google account: Settings → Accounts and sync. Choose the service you want from a list. For example, for Facebook or VK, removing a profile from your device will simply untie it from system applications, but it will not delete your page on the social network.
| Type of account | Impact on the system | Need for removal | Risk of data loss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Critical (Play Market, Synchronization) | Definitely at sale | High (Contacts, Calendar) | |
| Mi Account | High (Device Search, Cloud) | Definitely (otherwise blocked) | Medium (Notes, Recorder) |
| Exchange/Corporate | Medium (Mail, Tasks) | Recommended | Low (local caches only) |
| Social media (VK, FB) | Low (Annexes only) | If you wish, | Absent. |
Special attention should be paid to corporate profiles if the phone was used for work, which may contain security policies that limit the functionality of the device, and deleting such profiles often requires confirmation by the administrator or entering an additional password.
Factory Reset Protection (FRP) and Factory Reset Protection
FRP (Factory Reset Protection) is designed to protect the owner’s data in the event of theft or loss of the device. If you perform a hard reset with buttons without first deleting your Google and Mi accounts, the phone will be locked when you first turn on.
The system will require you to enter a password from the last synchronized account, so that the thief can’t just reset and use the phone, so rule number one: always delete accounts software-based through the settings menu before running Wipe Data.
⚠️ Note: Recovery Menu does NOT delete Google and Mi accounts. It only clears user data. If accounts were not deleted through settings in advance, the phone will require their passwords after rebooting.
If you forgot to delete your account and have already reset, you will have to remember passwords or go through a complex procedure to restore access through your computer and browser. FRP Legal ways without a password are almost impossible on modern versions of Android.
To clean up completely, delete all accounts in your settings before selling, then go to Advanced Settings → Restore and Reset → Reset. Only after that, the phone will be ready to be transferred to the new owner.
Restoring access and solving problems
A common problem is a forgotten password from Mi Account or Google. If you can't log out because the system requires a password you don't remember, don't try to guess it endlessly - this can lead to a temporary lockdown.
Use the recovery procedure through the site. For Google, go to accounts.google.com from your computer, type in an email and select "Forgot your password." You will need access to a linked phone number or backup email. For Mi Account, a similar procedure is available at i.mi.com.
💡
If you have changed your phone number and cannot receive a SMS to recover, add backup codes or alternative email addresses to your account security settings in advance (before you lose access).
In cases where a device is purchased by hand and someone else's account is on it, the only legal way is to contact the previous owner: ask them to remotely untie the device via the Mi Cloud web interface or Google Find My Device, without which the phone will remain locked.
If the problem is technical (server errors, interface bugs), try to remove updates to Google Play Services or Mi Accounts via the application management menu, sometimes bypassing the time glitch and successfully exiting.
