How to completely delete your Gmail account from your Xiaomi phone: 5 proven ways

Deleting a Gmail account from a Xiaomi device is a procedure that may be necessary when selling a phone, changing a profile or fixing sync errors. However, many users face unexpected difficulties: the system requires a password from an old account, blocks deletion due to MIUI Optimization, or after a reset, the device requests remote profile data. In this article, we will discuss all the current ways to delete a Google account on Xiaomi, Redmi and POCO smartphones, taking into account the features of MIUI 14/15 and HyperOS.

It’s important to understand that simply deleting your account through your settings doesn’t always clear your traces of it from the system. For example, after Factory Reset, your phone may require you to enter your remote profile data because of Factory Reset Protection (FRP), and we’ll tell you how to circumvent this protection by legal means without violating Google’s policies, and what to do if you forget your password from your Gmail.

Why can’t you just delete Gmail through your settings?

On Xiaomi devices, Google’s account is integrated deeper than it seems. Even after deleting through the Settings menu → Accounts, its data can remain:

• 🔄 Background Sync: Some services (e.g. Google Play Services) continue to use the account cache.
• 🔒 FRP-Lock: After resetting, the phone will require the deleted account data if it was the main one.
• 📱 MIUI Optimization: Some firmwares have blocked the removal option without disabling this feature.
• 🔑 Encryption Keys: An account can be linked to encrypted data (such as Wi-Fi passwords or backups).

Also, if the phone has two-factor authentication enabled (2FA), the system can request not only a password, but also a code from Google Authenticator or SMS. This complicates the process, especially if access to the old phone number is lost.

Method 1: Standard removal via MIUI settings

This is the easiest method, but it only works if:

• 📌 You remember the password from your Gmail account.
• 📌 There's no active phone. FRP-blocking (for example, after discharge).
• 📌 The device is not tied to a corporate account (for example, through Android Enterprise).

Instructions:

1. Open Settings → Accounts and Synchronization.
2. Choose Google (or your email).
3. Click on the three dots in the upper right corner → Delete your account.
4. Confirm the action by entering the password from the Xiaomi account (if required).

What if the Delete Account button is inactive? This is a common problem on MIUI 14.

1. Go to Settings → Special features → MIUI Optimization.
2. Turn off the MIUI Optimization slider.
3. Restart the phone and try again to delete it.

Method 2: Remove by resetting settings (Factory Reset)

If the standard method didn't work, you can do a hard reset, but here's the caveat: once reset, the phone will require you to enter your remote Google account because of Factory Reset Protection (FRP), a security measure that works if:

• 🔐 The phone has a screen lock on (PIN, pattern lock, print).
• 🔐 The device worked on Android 5.1+.

How to get around FRP legally (without hacking):

1. Add a second Google account before reset and make it your primary account.

3. Reset: Settings → About the phone → Reset settings.
4. After rebooting, enter the second account details (if required).

If you're selling a phone, the best thing to do is to delete all your accounts beforehand and reset the Recovery menu. Turn off your phone, press Volume Up + Power, select Wipe Data.

Method 3: Remove via Recovery Menu (for advanced)

This method is suitable if:

• 🛠️ You need to delete your account without access to the system (for example, after a failed update).
• 🛠️ There is a custom firmware on the device.

What you need:

• 🔌 USB-cable (preferably original).
• 🛠️ Installed drivers Xiaomi and ADB.

Step-by-step:

1. Turn on Developer Mode on your phone: Go to Settings → About Phone. Tap 7 times on MIUI Version.
